Uncovering the top talent in the Dutch Eredivisie is relatively easy in terms of forwards, as the league contains a plethora of classy strikers. However, uncovering silky-smooth midfield schemers, or tough-tackling deputies, is a different proposition altogether.

Strikers manage to attain the glory of scoring goals, while midfielders have a higher work rate and don’t seem to get the same level of attention. In the Dutch league, midfield generals abound - and they won’t go unnoticed this year. The following players have guided their clubs to glory, earning continental accolades, while others have defended to the death or slogged away in midfield for their teammates.

Wesley Sneijder (Ajax): Now 22, Sneijder has bulged the net on 17 occasions in the Eredivisie this year which leaves him seventh in the scoring charts and the top-scoring midfielder in the league. These performances, along with more international recognition, will not leave him in the shade at Ajax for much longer. He’ll find a home sooner or later. The question is: Which club will pat themselves on the back for picking him up - and which will be left to rue their chances?

Simon Cziommer (AZ Alkmaar):Something of a well-travelled player. Having been at several clubs in Holland and Germany, Cziommer has scored goals  wherever he has played. Clearly, Alkmaar have used him to his full potential as his 10 goals prove. At 26, this German midfielder will be hoping he’s done enough to earn the plaudits of those in charge of the national team. As yet uncapped, he’s certainly done enough to warrant attention from admirers – myself included.

Alex (PSV): Apparently on his way to Chelsea, and it's easy to see why. This may seem a bit obvious, but Alex's presence in the PSV back four has led to some unbelievably sturdy performances. He’s proved his ability to contribute offensively with six goals in the league. One only needs to go back a few months to recall performances against Arsenal in the Champions League, where his mere presence of was enough to move on in the competition at the expense of last year’s beaten finalists. Chelsea have an option for his transfer before anyone else. With the shortage of defenders the Blues have experienced this season, it’s likely that Alex will see a permanent transfer in the summer.

Maarten Martens (AZ Alkmaar): Another attacking midfielder, this Belgian international greatly enjoyed his first season at Alkmaar, scoring goals and creating them, too. He has guided Alkmaar to the top of the league table and his excellent performances in the UEFA Cup and the Dutch Cup have bagged him 12 goals. Not bad for a 22-year-old, and most definitely his best season to date.

Nicky Hofs (Feyenoord): It’s been a tough season if you’re a Feyenoord supporter. After watching them sink down the table last season following an unbelievable start to the campaign, the same thing happened this year following crowd trouble and inconsistent performances. One of the few bright spots is young Dutch international Hofs, whose goal-scoring exploits and mature performances helped Feyenoord to finish respectably in the league table. He’s scored more than 10 goals in two of the last three seasons, and at 23 is another young international player whomust have Marco van Basten’s mouth watering.

The list of honourable mentions is long, but it is almost certain that the five I have selected will attract the top clubs in Europe this summer.
