It has been reported that Tottenham have once more rejected a potential buyer for the club. This time an oil billionaire who has been spurned (deja-vu?)

With Roman Abramovich seemingly happy to throw money at Chelsea, Liverpool are now in the throes of a new era, as are Manchester United, West Ham and Millwall.  Even Arsenal appear to be re-considering their options; perhaps David Dein has got his way after all, who knows?

The fact remains that many fans will be scanning the broadsheets, Internet and club sites to see who their club will purchase in the close season. The question I’m asking is how many top-class players are actually out there who warrant the fees these clubs are prepared to spend in order to acquire their services? And how many players are out there who can adapt to the Premiership and hit the ground running?.

I really don’t believe there are many, either playing abroad or in our Championship, but all supporters will be demanding that their teams acquire the best players, and potentially blow all the money in one manic season of mayhem. I trust Leeds United fans will be aware of where I’m going with this.

Spurs are reportedly are chasing Arjen Robben. I think it’s nonsensical that a player would leave a team who are going to be playing in the Champions League for the foreseeable future, as opposed to going to one that perhaps will. Why would Robben take a pay cut, as Chelsea seem quite happy to offer players a salary that has little or no reflection on their ability?

It has been a sad week for Leeds United as the once mighty whites fell from grace to be playing in League One next season. No doubt there are some who are gloating at their demise; I personally think that there, but for the grace of God, go Spurs and many others who are chasing the dream (if honesty prevailed and rivalry took a back seat for once).

Leeds are where they are for no other reason than spending above their resources. I bet not one fan complained when the spending spree was in force or they were in the semi-final of the Champions League.

But in chasing the dream, I really wonder how many players there are out there who will make a difference to the teams chasing them. Players who are going to fit straight in like the missing piece that wasn’t there the previous season.

Using Spurs as an example once more - though Newcastle easily fit into that category of teams on the peripheral - why has a player joined them as opposed to one of the elite or why has he left one of the elite to join us?

No team’s supporters should ever have to endure the agonies that have befallen Leeds. I listen to phone-ins, read papers and scan the net and, almost to a man, the Leeds fans blame either David O’Leary or Peter Ridsdale for the calamity.

I wonder how many blame themselves for pressurising boards and managers to purchase players that are simply not worth the fee and at the end of the day, make no difference whatsoever.

Using Leeds as an example, Aaron Lennon, James Milner and Paul Robinson would all still be at the club had ambition not overtaken common sense. But as they say, common sense ain’t that common, is it?

Do you think Robben is Spurs bound? If not why not? Who else could Spurs use and Chelsea lose? Post a comment below or write an article for Sportingo.
