Congratulations to Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson for winning the Premier League The season will be remembered for the superhuman efforts of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and the emergence of Cristiano Ronaldo as a potential world-beater. It was really on the back of Scholes’ and Giggs’ experience that United built this championship season.

For summer purchases, Sir Alex will know more than he cares to admit that Manchester United’s failings in Milan can be attributed to there being no Roy Keane-like figure in the midfield. For all that Michael Carrick proved this season, one thing is for sure – when the going gets tough, Carrick is not the man you look to for redemption. But will Owen Hargreaves be the answer? Somehow I doubt it. I do not doubt Hargreaves’ ability. Maybe Sir alex could make a move for Michael Essien or Gennaro Gattuso.

United also need a striker. Selling Ruud van Nistelrooy was good business in hindsight, but getting Louis Saha as his replacement was not. He is injury-prone and not a proper foil to Wayne Rooney. Sir Alex needs to splash out on a mobile and effective target man who can hold the ball, and around whom an attack can be built; Fernando Torres, David Villa or Dimitar Berbatov are names that spring to mind.

As for Jose Mourinho, if he stays at the Bridge, expect the man to come back more determined and hungry than ever before and hid mind games to be more creative than ever.

Whatever next season brings, nothing can take away Manchester United’s achievement this season.
