Consistent match-winners in football are a rare commodity today. At most you can name around 15-20 players in that league and they define the big teams. Thierry Henry has been Arsenal's biggest weapon against Premiership defences in the present decade and he has it in him to terrorise defences further.

Since Arsenal's past two seasons were disappointing, the best way for them to go ahead would be to go on the offensive and finalise a deal with Arsene Wenger and be firm with other suitors for Henry. Manchester United were like this in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo - and their faith has paid off with the Portuguese winger producing some sublime performances this season.

If Arsenal are looking to mount a serious challenge to Manchester United and Chelsea, they would also be looking for a few key additions. How about Samuel Eto'o partnering Henry? If Eto'o joins, it would undoubtedly help Arsenal's reluctant-to-shoot midfielders. Eto'o brings with him the hunger for goals which can be valuable for Arsenal against opponents struggling in the lower half of the league.

Eto'o would also be an ideal candidate to be on the end of passes from the likes Tomas Rosicky, Cesc Fabregas and Alexandr Hleb. How about Michael Owen, who might be available for as little as £9m? That would be nothing but a steal for Wenger. He is in the mould of Eto'o - and British, too.

How about adding a winger to the side? Getting back Jose Reyes in place of the ineffective Julio Baptista would add width to our midfield. If not, Franck Ribery might be our answer to width problems. The defence seems OK with William Gallas and Kolo Toure set to continue with their partnership.

All this seems possible but things could go wrong, too, if Wenger's future is not settled quickly. Adding to that would be the fact that Arsenal are threatened by a takeover from Stan Kroenke and one of his supporters, David  Dein - the man who used to wheel and deal for Arsenal in the market.

If Wenger decides not to extend his contract, Arsenal stand the risk of not only losing Henry but also the likes of Fabregas, Robin van Persie, Gilberto Silva and Emmanuel Eboue, who are coveted by clubs in Italy and Spain. It will be a potential nightmare for Arsenal if this happens, as it would destabilise the club completely.
