Spurs are one of several clubs monitoring the progress of 17-year-old Gareth Bale since the January transfer window. The talented left-back has made it clear that he wants to try to secure a place in the Premiership with Southampton, but it looks increasingly likely that he will figure in a £10 million move.
The South coast club's 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Derby County in the first leg of the Championship play-off may cause the Wales defender to revise his options. Southampton have to reverse that scoreline, and add another away goal, at Derby on Tuesday night if they are to reach the play-off final. And even then there is no guarantee that they will return to the top flight.
Bale may look elsewhere -and Spurs could emerge as likely suitors. They were close to signing him last transfer season when rumours spread about interest from Manchester United and the move was postponed. Bale is exactly what Spurs need to fill the void at left-back, although a move to the Premiership is bound to present problems of acclimatisation in respect of pace and tempo at the higher level.
It is generally believed, and accepted in most quarters, that Bale will be on the move if Southampton fail to secure promotion. He has been a sensation in the Saints team as well as a favourite with the St Mary's supporters, so a shock move to north London may not go down well.
Would Martin Jol be prepared to thrust him straight into the Premiership spotlight? It hardly seems likely as he would have to cope with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Cristiano Ronaldo - a daunting prospect even for one with the confidence and conviction of Bale. There is even a suggestion that should Spurs sign him, he could be loaned back to Southampton to continue his progress.
But Bale has shown that he can hold his own at the highest level, having scored five goals for Southampton and two for Wales, and he has become something of a free-kick specialist in the David Beckham mould.
Should they fail to land Bale, Spurs may switch their attention to Wigan defender Leighton Baines, but it is important that they tighten up their defence next season. They need to cut back on the number of goals conceded to compete with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. This area is something that needs to be worked on desperately.

Nope...Spurs are signing Roberto Carlos

Mate not being funny - but you need to read up on your facts and improve your football knowledge a bit. First of all......Bale was came off in the first half and wont feature in the second leg.....and by the clapped the crowd as he was coming off it looked like he had played his last game for them. And second of all......the playoffs do not use the 'away goal' rule so as it stands the game is 2-1 with it all to play for!!!! Just thought id point that out. Even if Utd do sign Bale, it would leave one of their two left backs available (most probably Heinze) so maybe we could sneak in and pinch him. If not, Baines would be top of the list. And is it just me or has anyone noticed the amount of goals we let in set pieces and headers from open play??? Whats going on there, maybe Robbo needs to get on the skipping rope over the summer. And moving on the we should target a left winger and a creative attacking midfielder. Ghaly, for all his efforts, doesn't do it for me, Taarabt looks like he's gonna come g

Personally i couldn't care less where he goes to, as long as he leaves the SCUM. As the ONLY Premier league team in the south, we don't need to worry about who our players are going to. P.S To all scummers, COME ON DERBY. Enjoy your stay in the fizzy pop league.

I think 10million is way over the top for a player, who is untried at the top level. Watched him for Wales recently and got caught out a few times. He's got a wonderful Beckhamesque left foot, and perhaps will become a star in the future..then again perhaps he wont?, I wouldnt pay that sort of money out when there are players elsewhere who we could bring in at far less cost but with far more experience and quality than Bale has at this moment in time

Wayne Bridge should be first on the hit list! If we don't get him Baines secound choice and Bale third! But after seeing Levy talking about him in the Jan transfer window, it is clear Bale will be our number 1 target!

Has to be Baines in my opinion. Spurs can not afford to take another gamble with this position and he has proven that he can cope in the Premiership. Bridge would be superb but it is unlikely that he will leave Chelsea and take a pay cut to play for Spurs. Heinze would be in the same bracket but to expect a professional in any profession to move to another company for less salary is very difficult. If we can get Baines, Pederson & possibly Viduka i think we can seriously push the top 4 next season.

10 mill is a crazy amount for a developing kid. How about Barry ofvilla or Taylor of pompey or even both for less than 10 mill if we are serious about a squad. Both are proven left backs and left midfield and score their share.

I think Roozy's comments are spot on. I certainly wonder when Bale would be given a chance by Jol, when Taarabt - by all accounts an outstanding talent - isnt even on the bench half the time. I don't worry too much about the ten mill price; Spurs and Manure scouts know talent when they see it. And he's done a great job for Soton. And re Barry or Taylor, what makes Dublinspur so sure they're for sale?

I know the Spurs aren't strapped for cash, so the bottom line should not be affected. Our defense was horrible this season. Luckily, we have this 21 year old French centre back coming in. I say DEFINITELY sign Gareth Bale and another proven veteran such as Baines / Taylor. With ample depth at the left back position, we could even have those talented lefties play midfield against the lesser teams to stretch their abilities like Riise does for Liverpool. I know we have Lee and Benoit, but you can NEVER have enough defenders as proven this year by the Spurs injury riddled season. You cannot pass up young, dynamic talent. Sign Bale and go after another veteran leftback.

EITHER BALE OR BAINES WOULD BE A HUGE IMPROVEMENT TO OUR PROBLEM LEFT BACK POSITION. WE SHOULD ALSO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO SIGN MORTEN GAMST PEDERSON FROM BLACKBURN WHO IS THE BEST CROSSER OF A BALL IN THE PREMIERSHIP
by Rocksuperstar on May 14, 2007
Lee is more than competent, but if the rumours of BAE wanting out are true then he would be a fantastic young signing. Lee's got a couple more seasons in his tank, Bale could work out as a good replacement, coming into the team at a high point

Come on boys and girls, we need a monster squad. Buy them both or one plus Matt Taylor as he is a Spurs boy through and through.
by The Tailor on May 14, 2007
they can keep Bale.. I would much prefer Taylor of Portsmouth, Bridge of Chelsea or Barry of Villa..
by edwhitewell on May 14, 2007
I still think that the best player Spurs could sign at left back would be Reading's Nicky Shorey, who may cost between £6-7 million, but well worth it. Also due to the problems at Wigan I would like Leighton Baines to come in as back-up, lets face it we are going to have another 60 game season again so we need two excellent players in each position. For the left wing I would like Andres Guardado the Mexican international, who is absolutely phenomenal and back him up with Martin Petrov. But to get the best out of our wide players we still need a playmaker something that has been lacking since selling Carrick.

bale is better than baines
by Jorgen on May 15, 2007
Barry, Bridge, Bale or Taylor. Any of these would cement our back four.
by Alex on May 15, 2007
We can get bale for the future and Roberto Carlos for the preasnt
by Steve Bott on May 16, 2007
Spurs have no chance of beating Man U to Gareth Bale's signature. Unless he wants to become a drug-taking, nightclubbing empty-headed flash monkey like all the rest of the Cockney spiv footballers he will go under the wing and iron rod of Fergie at OT and flourish!

yeh m8 u sound like my nan, u speak utter bollcoks so stop your worthless jibba jabba he is ours . we'll see wont we pussy boy
by Spursfan on May 17, 2007
As a Spurs supporter I would rather have Baines of Wigan. I think Bale is overrated and certainly over priced. He is totally unproven in the Premiership and I would not want Tottenham shelling out the sort of money he has been touted at.
by Bill Graham on May 20, 2007
I dont think its a question of Tottenham outwitting Man Untd at the end of the day I dont think Untd will be interested. He is simply to inexperienced for the premier league to be paying silly money for.We usually get hype from different quarters as to who clubs should buy...lets wait and see.
by kyle o'shea on May 27, 2007
I think that spurs will sign gareth bale 4 £6,000,000 raising 2 £10,000,000 if he plays well. I rekon he will B no 5. ha ha ha
