What an amazing story! Former Arsenal player Steve Sidwell has agreed to join Chelsea on free transfer. The 24-year-old has quit Reading after rejecting a new £25,000-per-week, four-year deal. It was reported that he is to get twice that figure in Chelsea. Chelsea have been consistently linked with a move for the highly-rated midfielder throughout the season. Sidwell opted to join the Blues despite interest from Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa, who all offered him a contract. He is Jose Mourinho's first signing of the summer and will be a valuable addition to the squad. An Arsenal kid, he grew up in the youth squad and played a few games for the senior team. Deemed not good enough to make the first team permanently, Arsene Wenger let him go to Reading. A year later, the kid scored four goals, had six assists and put in world-class performances in the Reading midfield.
But why did he choose Chelsea? He will not get many outings and his promising career will be stopped short before it gets going. A perfect example of this is Shaun Wright-Phillips. Look at how the move to Chelsea has completely derailed his development. Why did Wenger let Sidwell go if he is really that good? Surely the gaffer knew better after nurturing all those youngsters over the years. Or is the rumour that Arsene does not like Brits true? I notice our ex-players are playing pretty well around the Premiership; the likes of David Bentley, Matthew Upson, Nicolas Anelka, Jermaine Pennent, Sol Campbell, Kanu, Sidwell and others.
Maybe Chelsea are trying to build a second team of Gunners! First Cashley Cole, now Sidwell. Who will be next? Are they picking up our rejects? If this theory is true, you have heard it first from www.arsenalnfriends.com
Is Chelsea a good move for Sidwell? Post a comment below or submit an article to Sportingo.

Erm, "a year later", he was sold to Reading 5 years ago and its really been the Reading coaching staff who have nurtured him to his current level.

silly article. very silly! however, come February when the african nations commence and Maureen loses Makalele, Essien and Obi Mikel, they will be begging for a scrapping hard nosed midfielder like Sidwell. Personally i think Steve's made a foolish choice going to those scum, but either way, he's a young talented englishmen, so best of luck to him.

World Class? Very good perhaps, but world class definitely not.

Maybe he wants to win something. Obviously something that's a bit alien to Arsenal fans at the moment. But trust me, they give out these small silver coloured things called trophies. Give it a go next season, apparently you can drink champagne out of them!

Makelele's French so won't be at the African Nations Grimandi. Also he's probably out the door so Sidwell will most likely rotate with Mikel

maybe the guy meant Sidwell performance last year. He did score 4 goals and had 6 assist for Reading.

Wenger offered sidwell good terms but said he couldnt guarantee when he would get into the first team so sidwell chose to go and get first team experience at reading. His current status is due to the quality of coaching at the madjeski on top of the superb grounding at colney. Why go to the chavs when he will be well down the list only making the subs bench during the african nations (behind lampshade, makelele, ballacks) And what have you been watching to say ex players are playing well upson 20 mins for wham before crocking AGAIN anelka goals against us ok but only 11 in total the rest of the season - solid but unispired kanu / campbell solid seasons at pompey but standards are lower at fratton and they wouldnt cope in the chumps league pennant over rated and only looked good last nigth when the milan full back went missing in the first half what about dickov at citeh a striker with the worst attacking teram in the league. Bentley 10 assists is top 10 in the league plus 4 goals on the fringes on e

Im on a mission today to spoil all the BULL SH*T articles on the web anout Gooners or in this case, ex-gooners. You seriousley believe Sidewell is World-Class??? He is good. good. That is it. Cescy fabuloso is World-Class, Gerradr, Essien and Scholes are World-Class! This ginger nut wouldnt go to Arsenal because he had Diaby, Cesc, Denilson and Gilberto to get past. And maby merida! CSKA just offered him more than the mid-table clubs he belongs to. Moureen said he needed back-up. He's got it now. Well in Stevie. You are now a hasbeen and Reading was the perfect club for you...

Each year Chelsea have purchased at least one Englishman to the extent that 6 played in the cup final. With Sidwells purchase and Glenn Johnson returning every Chelsea side next year will have an English core. Is it any co-incidence that Man U had 7(I think) British players in their squad at Wembley. The current 2 best sides in the country both have a British core. Arsenal may play pretty football, it may have fantastic youngsters but they have to overcome their lack of any British players in their side before they even start. On any given game on any given day an all foreign side can shine but over 38 matches (or the 60 matches top clubs are playing) then a very good British player probably contributes more than most outstanding foreign ones.
Doofus. Lets buy Reo-Coker, Bains and Bent. Get rid of Clichy, Fabregas and Henry. We will win the league then! Stupid f*ck up! If they are good enough they will play!
By your analysis everything in your garden is rosy and you are happy winning only 19 of 38 games, being trophyless for the season, finishing 4th in the league and scoring less goals than boring boring Chelsea despite having this so called wonder team. If its not the individuals (and individually they are very good) then it must be something else. I happen to believe (as do the managers of the 2 best sides in the country at present) that in this country you must have an element of British players in your team to suceed over the longer term.
Who do you support?
...look at the badge by my first post.
i didnt read your name. Well, its ok that you at Chelsea have had long term success with your english players. I mean, of course 50 years without anything, Billionairem 2 league titles. It must be that core f english players. Not Drogba, essien and robben.

Streason, what century do you come from? Africans and continentals can't play "English" footy? Just where would Chelsea be without those Etonians Drogba and Essian, or for that matter, Cech? Outside of Terry and Lampard, I can't think of any significant Englishman on your side. Bench-warmers, hmmm. If Drogba had played as many games as Henry this year (17), you would be trophyless, too.

People always say that an English spine is needed to win things. If that's the case, why does the national team perform so poorly? Presumably, that team's all English.

If Arsenals team are all so good why were they so far off the pace? As far as Chelsea goes for Englishmen they have played with at least 4 all season, the centre half and centre midfield (captain and vice captain) as well as one of the full backs (Cole or Bridge) and at least one wide player (Cole or Wright Phillips). Not insubstantial "influence" That is not to say that many overseas players dont have it. Personally I think Essien is already one of the best players in the world and would not swap him for anyone, I just dont believe that it means quite so much or defeat hurts so much to certain (not all) types of individual. Take Terry & say Gallas two great centre halves. Chelsea lost and Terry would get dozens of texts and emails from mates taking the piss just like all fans do when their side has a poor display. How mnany would Gallas have got in the same position? I come back to my main point why does every top club in Europe (one of the clubs that is a real Champions league contender)play with a backb
..backbone of home league talent. Arsenal are unique in not doing this and its hardly if results are justifying their point is it?

We got to the final without an englishman. Wheres your final?
..but I think you will find that one Englishman played in the final. Thats hardly the point though. If one final last season is good enough for you then who am I to argue.
