The Champions League Final in Athens between Liverpool and AC Milan was unsurprisingly dull compared to some of their displays during this past season. It was like the Premiership final between Chelsea and Manchester United, where we already knew that Manchester United had won the title so there was no demand on expectations. Liverpool have had to deal with a lot of criticism this year and we just have to accept that they are no longer the team they used to be. Since last year's World Cup, a lot of players (not only England’s) have just been in decline. It’s not the fault of the players. It's simply that they are playing too much football and it's taking a heavy toll on their bodies.
But we still look forward to watching Liverpool play because of those glimpses of class that they are capable of producing. Make no mistake, they are hard-working. Their footwork and technique are undeniably first class but there is still something missing. So why is it that watching a Liverpool game is dull?
They seem to be slower than most high-ranking teams. Granted, most English teams are on the slow side, but, Liverpool really are S-L-O-W. They will always be my favoured team because of the mere fact that I know that deep down, one day, they will shine again. And right now, I just don’t want to desert them in their time of need. But, there has been little enjoyment in watching them this season. Clearly something has to change in order for them to regain their status as champions. So much for Harry Kewell coming back. And poor Steven Gerrard - where have the thunderbolt shots gone? Gerrard has the reputation of coming up with an out-of-the-blue winner. He's probably a victim of overplay, but at least his neat footwork is there for all to see.Well, enough of roughing up the Reds. What about the Italians? The rope-a-dope technique seemed to have worked with the Reds, but there were precious lasting moments. Yes, Filippo Inzaghi’s goal deflected from Andrea Pirlo’s shot was pretty amazing, as were Kaka and Inzaghi's right-on-cue tag-team efforts, but watching Italians play is equally dull. It's like watching a team with lots of dirty tricks up their sleeves. But then again, I am biased because I still cannot forgive the Italian team for having cost France a World Cup win.

I just read your article. The only thing I regret is that I'll never get that minute of my life back again.

It took me a little onger, so that's 2 minutes of my life wasted. No, fatigue had NOTHING to do with it. The rest of the article is garbage we've been hearing for the last 17 years. Nothing new here. FYI, had Liverpool scored all their chances and Milan done the same, Liverpool would have won. This means that Liverpool need more cutting edge. I won;t go into anymore detail than that for now as it would go over your head.

Are you referring to the FA CUp final when you talk of the "Premiership Final"? You do realise that they are two different competitions and that Chelsea actually lifted a trophy at the end of that game, don't you?

If Liverpool had decent players they would have won. But they don't, so they didn't. Have fun rebuilding your team this summer.

No, I am not referring to the FA Cup Final -- thanks for stating that there's a difference, but if I recall, Chelsea won the FA Cup and Man UTd won the Premiership. Thanks all the same :-). Cheers.

to an extent i agree with you, the world cup has made some players tired. but on that note i dont think that should be an excuse. coming up to one of the biggest games of their careers i dont think there should be any reason to be tired if its just one more game and that too a CHAMPIONS LEAUGE FINAL. but yes liverpool are lacking quality in depth and thats what the club need to sort out this summer.

personnally im not happy with the idea that ...'They will always be my favoured team because of the mere fact that I know that deep down, one day, they will shine again...' thats not the reason you support your club! you should support them because of a passionate attachment, not because of some hoped for glory in a few years time. I've passionately followed the reds for 15 years (including 5 very DULL years under Houllier) and would continue to do so if we were in division 2!

They are sportsmen and therefore are fit. We (Liverpool)need a established striker, someone who is going to put away 20 goals a season, are midfield and defence are the best in the premiership. The Italians were lucky, very lucky
