Liverpool fans and players alike have learned that grit and determination alone cannot guarantee success - and that is why major changes must be made in the aftermath of their Champions League Final defeat by AC Milan. Having said that, it was refreshing to see Rafa Benitez and his players accepting that Milan were the better team. None of the Jose Mourinho whinging and moaning.

But what this Athens adventure has shown is how threadbare the Liverpool squad actually is. Bolo Zenden (sorry I always come back to Zenden) should never represent any club at the highest level, but evidently Benitez felt that Harry Kewell was not fit enough for a full 90 minutes.

Mark Gonzalez is either not good enough or not ready, but there were more serious problems with the selection. Steven Gerrard`s best position is central midfield. It's not a debate any more, it's a fact. But in the biggest game of our season we had to play him out of position because Dirk Kuyt is the only striker we have worthy of the title world-class. Peter Crouch may be some day but he seems more super-sub material right now.

If we had had the influx of money that we are about to receive earlier and had been able to buy another  world-class striker and a top left-winger, then I honestly believe the result in Athens would have been very different, because Milan were there for the taking with Rafa`s tactics and a strengthened team.

But this is football and we can't always get what we want. But one thing I do want is for Gerrard and Co to carry the disappointment and the pain of losing this final all through the summer and use the memory and lesson to advantage.  With the reinforced team that Rafa will build, they will hopefully get off to the flying start that has eluded them for so many years now. Liverpool have been shown where they need to improve and Rafa has already berated his new owners to give him the cash quickly.

Two players he has missed out on were Samuel Eto`o, before Barcelona signed him, and  Daniel Alves of Sevilla, who will now cost three times as much as he would have done had the board backed the first move for him. I have followed Liverpool all my life, from the Bob Paisley glory years all through the title-barren years, and I have seen managers come and go without that promised the Holy Grail.

But Rafa Benitez is by far the man most likely to bring the Premiership title to the Kop. There have been a lot of false dawns in between, but now we have one of the top managers in the world, and for the first time since the game was flooded with megabucks we can actually compete at the very highest level for the signatures of the very best in the game.

Expect a host of top names to arrive at Anfield this summer, and,  alongside Gerrard and Co, watch those new arrivals put aside the pain of Athens and mount a serious challenge on the trophy we really want - the Premiership.
