As was widely expected, the last day of Italy's Serie A was a farce. Theoretically, five teams were still struggling to avoid relegation, with one of them due to go down. That's right – theoretically!

But everyone in Italy already knew that the team who lost the game between Catania and Chievo (two of the five strugglers) would go down because the other three – Parma, Reggina and Siena –  were playing against much stronger teams that had no interest in winning those games or even playing them, namely Empoli, Milan and Lazio respectively.

And everything went as expected. The three lower teams playing against stronger sides won easily, and Chievo lost 2-0 and were relegated after six years in the top flight. So let the arguments begin! Everyone now is crying foul for what happened. If I remember correctly, it's the third time in the last six years that Milan have been beaten by Reggina in the last game of the season to 'save' the southerners from relegation.

It was especially interesting because this year the 'magna magna' (combine) began a week before it was supposed to when Reggina came back in the second half against Empoli (them again!) to overcome a 3-0 deficit and sneak out with a point.

Now many people throughout Italy are calling for play-offs (as if we didn't have an already-crowded season) or to give a bonus point for the upcoming season to teams winning in the last three games of the previous one. Personally I'm in favour of play-offs, but only if they feature the 16th playing against the 19th in the table and the 17th against the 18th, with the better-placed team having home advantage - unless they finish even on points, when a neutral venue would be arranged.

There is an even simpler change that can be easily made: when the calendar is decided by the computer at the beginning of August, it's almost a must-be one because the computer programme has to consider an awful number of rules, limitations and constraints and one of them is that the teams who finished first to fourth in the previous championship cannot meet each other in the first three and last three matches of the new season.

I cannot see the reason for this rule; I think Italy is the only country where such a restriction exists. You'll never see an Inter v Roma match on the second to last day of the season like the Chelsea v Manchester United game we saw this year, because of this foolish rule. Another foolish rule is that two teams playing in the Champions League cannot meet each other before one of the Champions League scheduled dates - another foolish restriction that creates stronger limitation to the programme.

My vote goes to a free for all fixture list without any restrictions, so we'll really see that the teams that deserve it will win the league or be relegated, avoiding the 'magna magna'" that has become normal and accepted in the past 10 to 15 years in Serie A.
