Well, they are in the right departments, midfield and up front, but has Sir Alex Ferguson splashed out too much in bringing Nani and Anderson from the Portuguese League to join their compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford?

It's said that Sporting Lisbon's Nani and Brazilian Anderson, from Porto, will cost United the best part of £30 million, so allied to the £17m shortly to be laid out for another midfielder, Owen Hargreaves, that means Fergie will have spent all but £10m of the £53m United's owners the Glazers have allegedly given him to buy in new faces this summer.

Hargreaves is a proven mediocre England international. United already have Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Kieron Richardson, players in the same mould who operate in midfield, too. So, unless Fergie can see something else in Hargreaves, United is just another makeweight to add to the pool. Hardly a replacement for the aging Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes and never in a million years one to fill the massive hole left by Roy Keane's exit into management.

Unless you are a regular observer of Portuguese football, Nani and Anderson are unknown quantities. But they play in midfield and up front and United's prime requirements are two quality midfielders - a ball winner and a playmaker - and a goals-galore hitman up front.

So because most don't know much about them and the fact they are from a Latin country with all that that entails, there will be much excitement that these two are the real deal and can emulate their compadre, Ronaldo.

If they are half as good as him, then that'll do for starters - they can always improve as time goes on.

Nani, Anderson and Hargreaves should bolster the United squad sufficiently to challenge hard for the Champions League once again, the defence of the Premiership title and maybe the odd cup along the way - you know, the Charity Shield, the League Cup and, oh yes, the FA Cup too.
