I can completely understand where you are coming from with regards to this situation. Football has a completely bizarre contractual situation that is incomparable to any other professional situation. You don't see a bank trying to "buy" a rivals manager do you? Anyway... The reason that Spurs fans (myself included) are somewhat aggrieved at Sol is because his situation is not quite as simple as it seems. He was made club captain, offered a record-breaking wage deal & plenty else. He was told that if he wanted to leave the club, we wouldn't stand in his way, but would obviously prefer to sell him. The fact is that he would have commanded about £10 - 15 million, even back then. Campbell(end) however did not tell the club what he was doing. He stalled on his new offer until he was in a situation whereby he could sign off on a free transfer. He did this. Spurs fans were annoyed at him by now, but the simple fact is that he signed for Arsenal. For a true supporter, this is heinous. It is effectively treason again
against your club. It not only shows a lack of loyalty to the club that trained him through their youth ranks, but it was, and still is, a direct snub to the fans that were effectively paying his wages at the time.

I hate him, not because he cost us 15million pounds, not because he went over to the Arse, it was because he made an advert for Pizza Hut with Tony Adams just prior to the 2001 FA semi-final, saying what an honour it was to be a captain of Tottenham Hotspur. He stated during it, all the values expected of someone that holds that position...and then did what he did and then after the flack comes his way, says What did I do!, the man (loose term), is a piece of crap, no more no less

We are the ones that hound the board for new players. We are the ones that have the live for today and hang the consquencies attitude. We are the ones who are bitter at our rivals success, and desperately want to emulate it, regardless of the long term damage...its called professional football, its a greed driven industry ,that thrives on jealousy and uses our desire and passion to make money...and long may it continue!

Because they are sad buggers that is why they still hold a grudge against Sol Campbell

Had the bloke came out and been honest with his fans (remembering that he was our club-captain at the time and had been at the club since he was a boy) then I'm sure his move to our London rivals wouldn't have created such a problem. However, there are ways to go about things, and lying to thousands of people about your intentions is not one of them. He repeatedly stated his desire to re-sign for his boyhood club and so end all the speculation about his future. The man (and I use the term loosely) was possibly the best defender in the world at that time and we would have raked in a lot of money had he been honest, said he wanted to leave and moved on with our blessing. The other problem is that he moved to Arsenal purely for the money. Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid and whole host of other clubs wanted him, yet he still went ahead and moved to Tottenham's biggest rivals for free. Sol Campbell will forever be known as Judas for that is what he is. He set us back a few seasons in our developme

the reason i hate him is because he said on more than one occasion he wouldn't join arsenal ... and low and behold he did It says a lot about the man that he lied so openly. especially to the people who adored him, and to their greatest rivals. Guys an idiot and a p*ick
by essex_yid on June 06, 2007
imagine your beloved henry promising to sign a new deal then fcuking you off a the last minute and joining us for free!!! wouldnt make you hate him!!

What about a persons ambition? Yes Spurs nurtured Cambell through his youth and gave him his big chance, but don't lose sight of the fact that a) he repaid this debt with his performances (particularly when made captain of Spurs) and b) the guy was ambitious. You can't argue with the fact that he left Spurs, admittedly to join their fierce local rivals, but then proceeded to win the double in his first season at Arsenal. Maybe he came to the decision that to win trophies and play Champions League football, he needed to move to what he perceived to be a club with realistic chances of this.

There are many things in life that change, some are very important and some are not. When it comes to the really important things you have to put them into perspective. For example around half of us will change our wives or husbands during our lifetime, but not many people change their loyalty to the football club they support. This means that no matter what happens to your club your love is unconditional. Should someone cause harm or bring dishonour to your club, it is only natural that you would turn against that person. Sol Scumbag Cambell lied and decieved Tottenham and their fans for months.. for what? a few pounds that he really does not need, because he is already wealthy. Such betrayal cannot be forgiven. I for one would rejoice to hear of the death of this Judas, but alas only the good die young. it is reassuring to know that eventually this piece of human trash will end up rotting in hell with all the rest of the devils spawn. Am I bitter you bet I am. Sol I hate you.

'It' deceived for many many months stating his desire to remain at the club. Not only after stressing and dragging us loyal Spurs along for the ride, he then threw crap in our face at the end by signing for scum. With 'it' and King at the back it would have been a real solid foundation, in the end Scum benefited from, let's face it a greedy, greedy lying scumbag of a thing. Other than that not to bothered really.
At least it's not a particularly sensitive issue still.....

point taken about him being straight up with the club so that he could have been sold rather than let go on a free, but what club would pay £15m for a player whose contract was up, when they can get him on a free? Plus also don't forget the 'Agent' factor. Its a sad an annoying fact but they are solely concerned with their clients (and their) welfare - not the supporters. His agent would have told him to see his contract out, and then pick a club to go to out of all the big European teams. Maybe Arsenal's offer was the best of the bunch. we'll never know i guess

I was there on the last day of the season at White Hart Lane when he walked round the pitch on his own for the last time as a Spurs player. He was wearing a suit as he couldn't play that day due to an injury he picked up in the FA Cup Semi Final ironically against Arsenal a few weeks earlier. He was applauding the Spurs fans as he walked round and lapping up the praise being heaped on him by the whole ground as each fan hoped he would sign a new contract that summer. All that time he knew in the back of his mind he would end up captaining the red half of north London the next season. That is the reason i cannot forgive and forget. I wonder if Arsenal fans will forgive Ashley Cole in time? I doubt it. I know he didnt go on a bosman, but the principle is still the same

On the flipside to this, there are a hell of a lot of Spurs fans who want it let go, and that song to stop being sung. Christ, I was disapointed in him for the lying, and the stalling, meaning we got nothing for him, but I am well and truly over that. Besides, Ledders deserves his own song, not an afterthought tacked on the end of a Sol-bashing chant.

whilst the content of your article bares littles resemblence to the headline I can answer the question in the headline. Why are spurs fans angry with him? First and foremost it was the lies and deceit forgotten by most third parties this excuse of a man reassured the fans on numerous occasions he wanted to stay and would sign a new deal and was telling the fans this even in the january of the year he left. A second was his chosen destination at the time he had his pick of clubs in England and across europe so selecting the scum whilst possibly a sensible football decision though barcelona or man utd would probably have been better, is unforgivable to spurs fans. Then to come out in the press even after this and say something along the lines of "i'll always have a special relationship with spurs fans" shows just how ignorant he really is of the feelings of spurs fans. Possibly early signs of his mental problems even?

He was much better than the rest of the team at the time and was frustrated so I didn't blame him for wanting to leave. He could have gone to Inter, Juve, ManU etc and we would have welcomed him back to the lane but he did the ultimate judas act by signing for our most detested neighbours while we didn't get a penny. Absolute scumbag.
by Ingar on June 06, 2007
Ladies and gentlemen. My suggestion is to forgive Sol Cambell, and offer him the chance to make it up to you. Bring him back, give him a contract. Let him finish his career at the club where it all started. Give the man a chance to end his life like a happy man. I am sure this would be great for the club, the supporters, and last but not least for the man himself. Spurs supporter since age 6
Nice wind up!

obviously we have to understand that players have ambitions, and if they're being held back in a club then why shouldn't they want to move to another one? but we have evey right to hate Scumbell for lying and deceiving us, I only hope that even though Berbatov admires ManUre (and why shouldn't he?), he stands by what he said, that hes staying at Spurs.
by Spursforever on June 06, 2007
I'm old enough to well remember our greatest ever goalkeeper joing the scum, when we felt he was surplus to our requirements. A sad day for all concerned. However, every time he came back to the Lane we cheered him for what he had done for us. No-one ever boo'd Pat. We even gave him a testimonial years later. Scumball was a different scenario, explained very well in the comments above. He was the captain and figurehead of our club. we loved him and he let us down badly. Hate isn't a big enough word!

The reason is simple. The swamp monsters of N17 cant swallow (unlike Sol eh eh?) the fact that he won as many titles in 3 seasons at The Arsenal then middlesex rovers have in 125 years must be galling. I know i would be upset. Still as ive overheard Sol once say about them "never mind they are only a bunch of mugs" His words, not mine, honest guv.
by LondonGuy on June 06, 2007
There is no loyalty anywhere in the game, not between the player and the club and vice versa and not between the club and its supporters as we have prices hiked season upon season. And Supporters too are guilty of the same, each they boo or slow handclap their own players or the entire team. I am not in favour of booing players for having left the club but on the other hand, the players have to accept that as part of the game, after all they took a handsome profit and so when they face their ex-fans, they are going to have pay the piper and get on with it. As regards Campbell specifically, well, matters were compounded by virtue of his choice of club that he eventually joined.
by IQATL on June 06, 2007
For starters, the vast majority of Spurs supporters have moved on from the Sol saga. On a second note, Sol lied to the Board and the supporters whilst Sidwell made his intentions clear earlier. Sol said he loved the club and would stay yet so the Board (in their stupidity) let the contract run-out. he signed for them lot on a huge salary due to no fee involved. You should look at the facts before you start posting this kinda rubbish!
