Transfer speculation I understand, it is a necessary evil of the mid-season break when fans/journalists/bloggers/my mate Kevin start making up stories in order to fill the void that comes in the summer. However, the idea that Thierry Henry would leave Arsenal to join Liverpool just beggars belief.

I could understand if it were Barcelona, a great club which, despite a recent slump in form, could still win La Liga. Henry wouldn't be out of place in their star-studded line-up (in fact he would arguably walk in as their best player). AC Milan I could also understand, as Champions League holders and a mouth-watering array of talent. Hell, I could even understand Chelsea and Manchester United as possible arenas for the great man to shine. I would understand it, but I wouldn't be happy. So why, then, the apparently very real prospect of him joining Liverpool?

Don't get me wrong. Liverpool are a good side, maybe even a very good side, but it has been many years since they were a great side. I had always had it in the back of my mind that Henry would fly the coup, but I was convinced that if he did so it would be to a whole other country - to Spain or Italy, maybe even back to France, but not to Merseyside. It just wouldn't make sense and in my opinion any decision of this nature would make me doubt his sanity. Maybe he has suffered concussion following some sort of training-ground collision with man-mountain Johann Djourou.

'His quotes on his future are becoming vaguer by the day, and even the staunchest Gooner cannot be too shocked or irritated should he decide to move on'

More worrying, perhaps, for Arsenal fans is that it does look likely that their hero will leave sometime soon. His quotes on his future are becoming vaguer by the day, and even the staunchest Gooner cannot be too shocked or irritated should he decide to move on.

There are no doubt good times ahead at the Emirates, but Arsene Wenger is building for the future and Henry may seek speedier rewards elsewhere. Maybe this is all nonsense, though, and Arsenal fans will awaken Dallas-style from a deep sleep only to find that it was all a dream.

There are signs that this is not mere speculation, however those signs point primarily to the large sums of money being placed in betting shops in the North West on Henry coming to their beloved club. Is this enough to base any tangible thoughts of it actually happening? I think not, but stranger things have happened - or have they?
