There is an argument, albeit flawed, that Freddie Kanoute could have been as big a success as current legend Dimitar Berbatov. Before Spurs fans brand this as a mindless comparison I should add that Fredi scored 12 goals in his first 17 starts in a Tottenham shirt, a great tally. The only reason his Spurs career didn’t continue to prosper was his decision to represent Mali in the African Nations Cup. This angered David Pleat who was in charge at the time and was followed by another decision that was to spell the end of his time at White Hart Lane, when he went AWOL from Spurs 2005 summer tour of Mauritius.

Whilst there is no doubting that Kanoute is a the kind of player who can disrupt a club - a la Nicolas Anelka - he is a natural goalscorer. And given Martin Jol’s decision to bring in equally ‘sulky’ Mido there seems little reason why he couldn’t have made the grade at Spurs.

In Spain Kanoute has amassed 38 goals in two seasons and led Sevilla to handy placings in La Liga (they can actually win the title this season), and two UEFA Cup wins. Not a bad tally for a side which in many ways could be seen as the Spanish equivalent of Spurs, not one of the top dogs but one which commands a strong following and boasts a proud history.

"In Spain Kanoute has amassed 38 goals in two seasons"

This brings me neatly to the issue that sooner rather than later Spurs fans will have to decide which of their strikers they would least wish to lose. I think it is a given that Mido will flee (probably to Manchester City) so who is to be, Robbie Keane or Jermain Defoe?

At this stage of their careers neither would wish to be playing second fiddle to the other, especially when they could easily fit in to any other Premiership outfit. Defoe is a natural goalscorer but Keane gives more to the team. Whoever partners Berbatov, Spurs posses one of the best attacking threats in the Premiership, especially when you add Aaron Lennon into the mix.

One cannot help but think what might have been had Kanoute still been playing at Spurs. He is a striker in a similar mould to Berbatov with strength and skill in abundance and maybe with age his temper may have mellowed.
