Great article, just missing one point, US footballers are just not up to scratch. All the players named are at best average and should never even be considered as world class!

Gooch chose the wrong club by coming over to Newcastle. Our whole defence was in dissaray before he came so too much was expected of him too soon. Given another season I think he would have turned out fine, he was certainly not the worst defender at the club.

I hate to agree with a Chelsea fan, but needs must! Unfortunately, the US seems to be fairly slow in building up their talent. Although there has been football in the US for many decades now, they have never seemed to bring through any particularly distinguished players. Hopefully, however, this will not last forever. With the sudden interest in Premiership clubs from US Billionaires, we will hopefully see more of an interest – and investment - in domestic football in the US. They also have a very good system for bringing players through at the clubs, their draft system etc. makes it difficult for clubs to bring in large amounts of highly rated foreigners. I would love to see an American making a big influence on the Premiership, but unfortunately, do not see it happening anytime soon. N.B. Although Freddy Adu may have American citizenship, he was born in Ghana…

I have to disagree with the chelsea fan!! The three americans we have are better than average! Macca is god!! No matter how old he is he still puts 110% in and works so hard!! He out scored the likes of andy johnson this season and that's with a team that had a poor season! Dempsey is a young player with bags of pace and skill and I'm positive he will become more and more influential to our team next season! And finally Bocca! Well what can i say! Our 2nd top scorer!! And so solid for our defence just a shame knight just cant seem to play along side him!!

Personally, I've watched the US team a couple of times and frankly they have more heart than whole English team, save Joe. The time is going to come when the US national team spanks England in a meaningful game an all our criticisms of them as second rate are going to come back to haunt us. Its a simple matter of demographics. There are over 5 million kids under 14 living in America who worship Raphel Marquez, Beckham and Ronaldinho and dont even know Micheal Jordon is. They are coming watch this U-20 team in Canada, you'll see...

Chelsea Fan--Where exactly is anyone (not least the author of the piece) claiming that the American Premiership players are "world class"? I think stereotypes and the blinders of "tradition" (i.e., the US isn't traditionally a footballing powerhouse, therefore none of their players could possibly be any good) prevent you from absorbing the thrust of this article.

How over priced English players really are, surely there are home based players out there who are on par or better than the US players in the prem?, but at what price
