I WOULD LOVE D.BENT TO PLAY FOR SPURS
by DaveK on June 16, 2007
Jol needs to rotate all the strikeforce and cover for injuries. If Berbatov is injured the Robbie Keane "goal-machine" doesn't score. Mido is hopeless and we need more productive partnerships to give Jol options in every game. Bent and DeFoe could be equally productive as Keane and Berbatov if they get enough time on the pitch and not the usual Jol 15-20 minutes when we are 2 goals behind. And, as a bonus, Bent appears to be a player who actually wants to play for us as opposed to just being interested in the money.
by peter on June 16, 2007
If Keano dropped deeper, maybe him, Bent and berbs could play together.
by plymouth Hammer on June 16, 2007
It sounds starnge but the reaction to Bent was very split, most people agreed he would be a good squad player, It was about 50 / 50 wether we thought he would take us further than the strikers we have already but nobody thought he was worth the kind of transfer fee or wages the club were offering (oh by the way our intrepid media were so far off the mark on what he was being offered its untrue!!) so in a nutshell he wasnt worth the money, he didnt want to come so he now is not in a position to come to the hammers as he is not welcome we only want players who want to play for us and he has shown his true colours , those of a greedy mercenary. Saying that why would Spurs need him ? they have a great strike force, I would have thought there were other areas where they should spend their money !!!

Your opening paragraph: The Charlton striker could be priced out of the market with Tottenham's budget seemingly considerably lower than that of West Ham, the club he rejected. And that could mean Bent starting the new season in the Championship. Surely the point here is Wham are being totally unrealistic in what they are prepared to pay to get the signing AND what the will pay in wages. It is pretty obvious that Daniel Levy spends the club's money as if it is his own and he won't go splashing it out like the Egg man seems to want to do. Especially as their Prem League status is still to be decided....
Good morning Plymouth Hammer!! I'd be obliged if you could explain how you think DB is a mercenary in refusing what is a reported £75k per week to potentially go to Spurs, who have a salary cap of around £40k?
by James Cutmore on June 16, 2007
I honestly cant believe whats going on at West Ham at the moment, its like they are turning in to the new Chelsea. The money they are offering for good, but not excellent players is ridiculous. All they will attract is mercenaries. I think Darren Bent should be given a medal for turning them down, he has shown that money is not his driving factor, and that is one very good reason why he would be a good buy for Spurs. I cant see us keeping Defoe if we sign Bent, i would imagine he would go for about £12m, 1 year left on his contract etc, that would be a good bit of business. Personally, i prefer Defoe, but i can see that Bent offers a height advantage over Defoe and you could play any of Berb, Keane or Bent, so in terms of squad rotation Bent would be better. Left wing and centre mid are still the two areas we need to strengthen most.
by buckingham1203 on June 16, 2007
Bent at Spurs ? NO Thanks, he isnt worth it by any measure to what we already got. If we got 17 Million to spend - sell Mido - add that to the 17 Million people think Bent is worth and Buy Torres instead - pace and skill alongside that of Defoe is a great partnership the other partnership of Keano and Berb - we would be in top four at end of season. SDONT BUY BENT - HE AINT WORTH IT. If he was Manu and Liverpool lwould probably have signed him by now and so would Chelsea.
by Terry the Tott on June 16, 2007
Bent is being praised in some places for not being a mercenary by refusing a reported £90,000 a week. What utter rubbish. West Ham have a wage cap of £55,000 a week - that is what their highest earner receives. Bent obviously read the media reports of a possible £90k and got the shock of his life when offered £55k. He refused the transfer because he is a mercenary. We simply don't need him at Spurs. Our reserve (Defoe) is much much better.
Lets not waste our money on Bent - seeing as no one else wnat him either, otherwise he would have gone by now. Buy Sean Wright-Phillips. Lennon on one side, Wright-Phillips on the other, now taht would terrorise defenders down the flanks. NBoth are excellent crossers of the ball too, straight on to Berbies head What say everyone else ???
by DannyMackay on June 16, 2007
People seem to be forgetting that Charlton got relegated this season. They already had a high wagebill (over 70% of revenues) in the prem - and need to sell to stabilise and rebuild. as such if spurs hold out the price will fall from west ham's offer. and as for what happens to bent at spurs - he'll fight for his place like all players should - just on lower wages than at west ham. that desire to progress as a player instead of just tack the cash shows real class.
by Tillers on June 16, 2007
All the Spurs fans seem to have forgotten that when Berbatov trots off to Man Utd you will not only need another striker as one has left, but he is the best forward at your club by a huge margin. If you don't conclude a deal for Bent before you pocket circa £25m for Berbatov you can be sure that Charlton will want the £17m West Ham were going to pay and then some. And at that point you will NEED him. Slag him off all you like, but Darren Bent scored more league goals this last season than any of the Spurs strikers in a truly rubbish team that got relegated. And he scored more goals than any of the Spurs strikers the season before that in an average team.
by rod on June 16, 2007
I meant mercenary in the fact he felt he should have got more money than WHU were offering, I dont know if he believed the media reports or not, or indeed what was being offered, however I do believe he was offered what realisticly he is worth and obviously he considered he was worth more so in that sense he is a mercenary.
by stu on June 16, 2007
keane scored 22 or 23 last season and berbatov scored about 28 in all comps.bent is not needed and berbs will stay for life.
swp a v.good player but we need a natural left winger,i like to see lennon on right, when hes on the left he's not as effective.i'd like to see garath barry or some flashy left winger from abroad.
Berbatov only scored 12 Premier League goals last season. Darren Bent scored 13, and more the season before. How many goals do you think he would have scored in a Spurs shirt? Not to mention all those European games. Berbatov hsa scores a total of 23 goals in 49 starts in all competitions (not 28) where as Bent has scored 35 goals in 77 starts. That makes their ratios 1 in 2.13 for Berbatov and 1 in 2.2 for Bent. And remember that Charlton finished second from bottom and Spurs finished 5th. I rest my case.

Bent is a talent, not just a goalscorer - he has some excellent other attributes aswell and Jol likes him. However, I dont want to see us spend ridiculous amounts on him so although I would be happy to sign him at that price isn't too appealing. I dont think it's fair to say we dont have the budget of West Ham, just malot more sense. If he'd gone there and for 17m it wouldn't have meant we couldn't afford it, but know when a player is being highly overvalued, and when not to waste money. Remember we've signed Bale, will probably sign Kaboul and a winger so a 4th striker isn't going to cost us more than 10m surely. After saying all that, it's not my money and so if we do end up getting all the positions we need filling and also pay big for a 4th striker then so be it. The club know what they're doing. (That's Spurs BTW, - W Ham? Worryingly for them this new money looks like it could end up a disaster if they carry on like this)
by tom POwer on June 16, 2007
....there is always a possibility (here's hoping) that Jol has realised with the success of Keane/Berby that success in front of goal is a about a good partnership and understanding and is looking to rotate Keane/Berby with Defoe/Bent always (injuries permitting) changing both strikers toi maintain consistant understandins and fitness levels.....?....if so we could be pretty lethal.
by DublinHammer on June 16, 2007
Relax Spurs fans, latest reports about his wish to actually move to Liverpool appear to validate this authors hypotheses regarding holding out for a bigger club. Also to quote both the Official Sites of WHU and Charlton, "he failed to agree personal terms" as he was offered nowhere near 70k plus a week, how many Statements does Eggy have to make to convince people that reports relating to certain wages are higher than the actual offers - we are under the speculation spotlight thanks to last seasons drama regarding Tevez and Masch!
by Spurs dont need BENT on June 16, 2007
so u are actually saying that bent is better than berbatov just because he scored one more goal in the league. u wanna compare goals how many did bent score all together in his career and how many has berbatov. also how many goals did bent set up and how many did berbatov. the way that u poms see things no wonder ur national team is so shit as u were the ones booing ur own player just because he plays in another country and then at the end of the game clapping. do i need to say his name HARGRAEVES. as for bent i would be delighted if we didnt buy him as to why would u (which would be the case defoe leaving) sell one perfectly proven player whos at the top age and level and then spend 15 - 20m for another. If he was that special talent then chelsea, man utd etc would be fighting over him not west spam who survived by cheating and totenham (club i support). This 17m pounds just shows how overrated the english players are no wander wenger has gone for french, fergie for whole world and rafa with spanish etc as
by Stuart on June 16, 2007
Spurs must be aiming to play 60 to 70 games this season and therefore need 4 strikers of the highest quality. All other top teams have them and a very poor team like West Ham had what they believed to be 5 decent strikers, but they were actually all crap. Tevez was half decent at the end for a few games but not worth investing much in. From Darren Bents perspective, they don't come much bigger than Spurs. Man U don't want him, Liverpool and Chelsea are boring and Arsenal can't afford him. Spurs to win UEFA Cup and top three for me.
by MICHAEL on June 17, 2007
I THINK HE COMES TO SPURS WE SHOULD KEEP JERMAIN DEFOE BECAUSE I RECKON THEM TO UP FRONT WOULD BE A GREAT TEAM THEN BERBATOR AND KEANE UP FRONT THEY WOULD WOULD BE GOOD UP FRONT AS WELL
