Spain is far and away the best league. It's constant entertainment and there are always four or five sides competing, nopt necessarily the same sides either, each year, not counting Real and Barca of course. Granted Liverpool & Chelsea have knocked out Barca in recent seasons but the results of a knoc out competition should not dictate which league is the better. I have very seldom seen a game in La Liga that hasn't been fascinating to watch. Unfortunately in the Premiership you get so many dour encounters when one good game does come along it's lauded to the heavens and the Premsiership is regarded as the best in the World. It's not. Self praise is no praise!
by Robert O Callaghan on June 18, 2007
With no doubt in my mind,La Liga is the best, like you have said Shane,I have rarely watched a La Liga game and not found it enjoying. And only with La Liga, more teams are in with a chance of winning the title.Real Madrid,Barcelona,Sevilla,Real Zaragoza,Atletico Madrid all are said to really go for the title for next year, when in England, realistically Man U and Chelsea seem to be the only real contenders this coming season, depending on if Thiery Henry goes or not,and Italy have Inter,A.C and now Juventus again maybe. So due to quality of matches and enjoyment of the football played and competition for the title I think Spain is the best, with no doubt in my mind.

Man I can agree with you that La Liga is the best right now, even though we don't have to forget that Italy probably had the most entertaining league in the '90s just like England had in the '70s. But come on, at least try to spell the italian names right: Paulo Maldini?(ok that you like Spain but you're talking about a monument...) Catennacio? Zachardi? (is he from Morocco?) One last thing, don't forget that before all the chances that happened in the early '90s, UEFA Cup was generally tougher the former Champions Cup, because often the teams that won their leagues the year before were not the strongest the following year (with some dynasties being exceptions), so you have to consider also this when adding up European wins
by Rob on June 18, 2007
Italy have won 4 times and its Zaccardo not Zachardi!!!!!!!!! italia by far the greatest on all levels...
by Easy on June 18, 2007
I agree with you Tom. The analogy seems to favor Italy but we all know the best football is played en la liga.
by Tom Osebe on June 18, 2007
Profound apologies for the wrongly spelt names. And yes, Italy has indeed won the world cup 4 times. I wrote the article too fast.

We are the best in always
We are the best in always? Clearly, so good in fact you are even making up your own language!
by H on June 18, 2007
The Italian and Spanish leagues are both very good, however I believe the Serbian league to be the most entertaining!

They are the true players
by Baz on June 19, 2007
You can't rate how good a league is by the performance of its national squad at a world cup! England has had many poor showings at world cups, but in terms of its league, I think its the most exciting league to watch, and I'm not English! The Premier League has a good recipe of drama, goals, egos and crazy managers which make it a great league!
by meftuh on June 19, 2007
I THINK THE ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE IS THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WHOLE WORLD.AND THE BEST CLUB IS LIVERPOOL.
by Robert O Callaghan on June 19, 2007
eh nibu, arent england, italy and spain in europe??? And Baz,the "drama" in England is good, only because it has to be caused by bungs,or failed drug tests, and the question asked was which FOOTBALL league was the best not which drama league and in terms of football Arsenal and Man U are the only two teams capable of really entertaining football, when in Spain every game is excellent. In england you could watch games like Fulham against Aston Villa and you know from the off its going to be a boring encounter, but in Spain you could have a game like Real Betis against Villareal and have a really good contest.I just feel that england lacks in good footballing teams in comparison to Spain.

Chelsae is the best and to prove that just stick around for 2 to 3 years and you will get what I mean

premier league best football league MANCHESTER UNITED IS THE BEST
by V Wilson on June 27, 2007
I personally hate Spanish football and all it's trappings but I must admit that La Liga is by far the best league in the world at the current moment. Just look at how competitive the league race for top spot as well, the relegation battle was? With five games to go, 4 clubs had a chance to win it. And what a nail biter of a last day. With all their money and talent pool, Real Madrid and Barcelona can never take an opponent lightly, not even at home. When the champions lose 8 games in a season, I think that alone shows how competitive it is. And lets be honest, the talent pool is also very rich. I much prefer the English brand of footy but the gap between haves and have nots, is getting wider and wider. The Prem has no Getafe's ready to upset the old applecart at United or Chelski.
by tracey on July 02, 2007
What has the national team got to do with the quality of the league - nothing. Also England would have a lot more trophies if we hadn't been banned from Europe. And Italy and others would have a lot less if they hadn't bribed refs, doped their players etc.

each has it's own magic english is powerful italian is smart and spanish are rollercoaster but for me i will go with the calcio

by lukas on September 19, 2007
so what other leagues have won the the champions league title the most. yes la liga was once the best league in the world but now the premiership is better. just look at last season when 3 of our four teams made the semi finals and now all our teams are seeded in the champions league. the premiership is now the best league in the world.
by Roddy on October 24, 2007
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but I'm gonna guess that most of the people who are proclaiming one league or other 'the best in the world' have no idea whatsoever what's happening outside of Europe. It's a bit arrogant to dismiss non-European leagues based on the fact that a lot of their talent (a lot but not 'most') plays in Europe. Brazil won the 2002 World Cup using 6 players in the starting 11 who played their club football in Brazil; Similarlay, the Toyota Cup (previously the Intercontinental Cup) played since 1960 between the European and South American club champions has been won by S.America 22 times (to europe's 21 times), with Brazilian teams beating Barcelona and Liverpool in 2005 and 2006 respectively, not to mention Manchester United being blown away by Vasco Da Gama 3-1 in the year 2000 (fresh from European glory and at the height of their powers) at the inagural Fifa World Club Championship. The final was disputed by 2 Brazilian teams. I could go on and on but I think you get my point. Just
Sorry, got cut off... Just do me a favour. If you get a chance, watch the Brazilian, Argentinian and Mexican leagues (Probably the top 3 in Latin America). I'll guarantee that you'll be pleasantly surprised. Oh, just one more thing. While I'm at it, my favourite european league is La Liga. The EPL is just too physical and gung-ho for me. Too much running, too many long balls and not enough artistry, especially (as someone else pointed out)in the bottom half of the draw. Cheers

I think the National Team has a lot to do with the quality of the league-it shows the wealth of talent on a DOMESTIC level. 4 world cups to England's 1 and Spain's 0 plus 11 Champions League victories. That's a no brainer. From what I've been able to see of Italian football (since English Football is shoved down my throat here in the States) it is definitely the most graceful. The fact remains that most Italian players CHOOSE to play within Italy because the league is so strong. But Roddy definitely has a good point.

I cant believe u are using stats as a inter medium, if u can remember that English clubs were not allowed to be in the competition over a 5 year period. In which Italian clubs dominated, before the ban, english clubs had dominated the competition in the 80's until the ban. You are wrong in even trying to prove with stats.

Spanish La Liga, because: 1.-Best players, meaning, not just players strength or speed but technically. In English Premier they play harder and Italian Serie A... well, they play dirtier... it's something like antifootball... they sacrifice spectacle in order to defend better. 2.- Best teams: Madrid and Barça have the best players, put both teams together and you'll have the most of Brazilian national team (the best team), and spanish one... (but spanish team makes me cry... they think they are stars and they are nothing neither for global football nor for their teams) and best players from other countries... But there are other teams too... Sevilla has won UEFA cup twice in last two years, Valencia and Deportivo (not now) aren't bad at all. And almost 1/4 of Champ. League finalists are from Spain. And the most successful team is R. Madrid with 9 cups, Milan, just 7. And.. I could keep on arguing for a while... Apart of all that, we mustn't forget the corruption in Italian Serie A... they tried to hide it
by Scott Bowie on April 20, 2008
This comment is the smartest thing on this page. Italy is so corrupt you have to put asterix' beside all the silverware Juve and AC have won. Spain has two quality teams and thats sad. England has 5 teams that can win every year.

I THINK PREMIER LEAGUE IS THE BEST LEAGUE IN EUROPE NOW,BEACAUSE THERE ARE VERY GREAT PLAYERS STRONG TEAMS HIGH-LEVEL MATCHES THE MOST BEATIFUL GOALS SCORED IN THAT IS WHY I LIKE PREMIER LEAGUE I HAVE BEEN WATCHING 9 years.
by Fernando Comuzzi on December 27, 2008
I am from Argentina but the Serie A is superior to our legue and other European legue. Most bestest player from Argentina and Brasil is in Serie A. Messi is exepicion but he is Italian boy from Rosario. Also, small team from Serie A are betterer than English or Spanish. Sampdoria, Napoli, Fiorentina (with Levezzi, Gilardino, Cassano) ecc. Also England only win World Cup one time lomg time past, Spain never. They not futball countries.
