The term “Little Englander” is defined by Wikipedia as “any Englishman who sees only ‘Little England’ and who is unaware of the wider world”. This affliction can currently be witnessed in relation to the news that Sven-Goran Eriksson is about to become the new Manchester City manager. The thinking seems to be that Svennis was a pretty poor England manager, so there is no chance that he can resurrect City. What most of these pundits seem to forget or just ignore is that Eriksson has a quite unbelievable record at club level. The Swede's CV includes a UEFA Cup win with IFK Gothenburg and a European Cup Winners' Cup triumph with Lazio. Sven also led the Rome club to only their second Serie A title in 2000. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his trophy haul is that he is the only manager who has won the double (League and Cup in the same season) in three different countries, having achieved it in Sweden, Portugal and Italy. Sven’s reign as England manager was a disappointment. Under his charge, the Three Lions played some dire football but as always with the English national team, his time in charge is shrouded with questions of what might have been. If England had got to half-time against Brazil in 2002 with a 1-0 lead still intact, they might have gone on to World Cup glory in South Korea and Japan. Also, the two penalty shoot-out defeats to Portugal (Euro 2004, World Cup 2006) could have gone either way. It is also largely forgotten by his critics that Sven rescued the 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign following the mess left by Kevin Keegan. (The 5-1 win away in Germany was one of the greatest victories an England team has ever achieved.)
So the media wheels out the “Little Englanders” to tell us that Sven is a terrible manager because he couldn’t win England an international trophy. First up is Graham Taylor in the Daily Telegraph who says that Sven is “either brave or daft” to take the Manchester City job. Neil Warnock told Sky Sports News that he could do a better job than Sven at City. Presumably the media make public the thoughts of Warnock and Taylor because of their superior managerial records and the numerous European trophies they have won. Ex-England right-back Paul Parker has been the most scathing. He says of Sven: “His imminent appointment as Stuart Pearce's replacement at Eastlands is a bad move, and could prove disastrous for a club which has already known its fair share of dark times in recent history. He has not got the temperament to succeed in the English league. His style is far too quiet, laid back and laissez-faire.” This constant criticism of Sven that he is too quiet and laid-back makes a mockery of the English press. Not every manager can imitate the bullish leadership qualities of Winston Churchill. And since when was being quiet and laid back an automatic disqualification of a candidate's ability to execute a job successfully? With a transfer kitty thought to be in the region of £50m, Sven has an excellent chance of reinvigorating his managerial career. Partly because the bar has been set so low in recent years and because the City fans will lift their team if there is even an inkling of future success. The current squad is below par, but young England defenders Micah Richards and Nedum Onouha provide a platform on which to build. Perhaps the most distressing part of this soap-opera is that the focus on Sven is shifting attention away from City's new owner Thaksin Shinawatra, who is in no way fit to be a chairman of a Premiership club. The media’s fixation with all things Sven (and Nancy) has caused the real issue to be clouded over. Despite what you may read, Eriksson is a fine club manager. You don’t win 18 trophies if you can’t motivate a team. City, as is their custom, will probably lurch from one crisis to another, but Sven should give them hope of better days.

You were doing OK, and then you said Thaksin is not fit to run a Premiership club. Why? How many Premiership Chairmen would win 2 elections? You shouldn't believe everything that dictators tell you. There was a study by some international finance group(the name I forget)which indicated that levels of corruption in Thailand dropped whilst Thaksin was PM Thaksin is not taking on debt to buy Manchester City. He's raised the hopes of thousands of depressed City fans. He's appointed a good manager, and there's talk of investment in players, and the Academy. How is that not fit and proper?

I agree mainly with your comments about Sven. What you must realise is that Frank was illegaly ousted in a coup.... Why does that make him the bad guy? Of course the Junta will throw mud at Frank in the hope some sticks. You should read up on the war on the Drug trade, you might find the same people who deposed Frank, had there fingers in that pie.

Couldnt agree more. Sven's England record holds up against ALL previous England managers. The criticism seems to revolve abrounf him having the "best squad available since 66" Nonsense !!!! Apart from Owen(injured) Beckam, lampard, gerrard, Shrek and Terry none of the rest were world class, I dont recall Madrid or Milan ever fighting to sign Neville, Crouch Robinson etc.... We over hype our ability at national level and are at best a quarter/semi final team. Also, if we didnt have Franks cash, we would still be £60million in debt and we'd have appointed Warnock or Coleman.... Give Svenni a chance, Owen instead of Corradi anyday....

The first paragraph in this article is tenuous to say the least. If you read the wider press and internet forums, you'll discover that many managers have been rubbished after being linked to the Man City job. Nothing to do with his nationality, or ours for that matter. Most Man City fans I know are unconcerned with his England reputation and want him to just get started before the season arrives! His record in domestic leagues around the world has not gone unnoticed by everybody and i suspect the silent majority are satisfied with the appointment.

What is it with the media and City ? This article is fair in that it points up Sven's amazing club record and sets straight some points about his England days. Not before time. The game is globalised now. You either embrace it or die.

What does rag Parker know anyway? "His style is far too quiet, laid back and laissez-faire"...so what, I'd rather have that than the eyes bulging, fist pumping routine by the touchline jester that we have had to put up with for the last two years.

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only person who rated Sven a good manager. The stick the media gave him over his failure to win anything for England was completely out of order. Apart from Alf Ramsey, no one else has won anything either . . . yet if a couple of those penalty shootouts had gone the other way, Sven might well have been England's most successful manager ever. I think he'll do a brilliant job at City. I also think he's the most charming, sexy manager in the game!

The man has more silverware than most do in their kitchen. Give him a shot. Hell...he is better than Warnock...haha.

doesnt take much to give city hope does it.....should have gone for a young english manager, not for a trophy tart like sven...lets get his record straight....he was appalling as england manager at least under previous managers like robson, venables and hoddle u guys looked as if u would win a trophy and can to a certain extent blame baqd luck,(pens, beckham sent off) ..his record in club management...the double in sweden 15 years ago is worth about as much as winning the double in austria...he took the portugese record champion to another championship ( probabaly their 122nd) and he bot the scudetto with lazio who basically went belly up the following year... the cup in protugal and italy is worth about as much as the crown paint floodlight trophy in england.... he is not to be trusted in his dealings...see sheikgate.., and has no personal moral standards, apart from that he is a stand up guy....

Happy to see the ice man join the dustbinmen. So continues City's slow descent into football hell. Which is of course where they belong.

I completely agree. I read a very good interview with Sven in the Times a few weeks ago where he was very open and frank about his time with England, issues with Beckham and numerous scandals blown out of all proportion. The Sheikgate scandal too, the FA left him out to dry there. Truth is, the FA had given him express permission to look for other work as his contract was due to end yet when it was made to look like he was conducting back alley dealings, not one single FA representative came out to quash any rumours of wrongdoing. I heard that from Warnock & Co but then Warnock always has been a self promoting mouth piece anyway and a nationalist bigot to boot. Taylor also came out to say 'Sven was on a nice little earner' at City. Unbelieveable, he has not vene been unveiled and already the media circus has started tearing him down. He is a quiet and honest man but this time he knows what to expect from the media bloodhounds and he has admitted he will lead his life the way he leads it, it never affected th
the England job and although he had some dire perfomrances he still had a very good record. At the end of the day the squad were not good enough and luck played a part, can anyone honestly say, other than maybe sometimes being more entertaining, any England manager in the past 20 years has achieveed any better? I think it's risable that the fact he is foreign (Klaus) should be an issue. England are up in arms over Serbs absuing their black U21 players, lambasting a foreigner purely for being that is just as reacist. Practise what you preach. I for one hope he does well and rams the criticisms of bigots like Klaus here and Warnock down your filthy throats
u can call me anything u like, but not a bigot...i honestly believe that england has had the players over the last few years to win things..my view is that if germany and england had swapped managers before the last worldcup..u would have won it and we would have been eliminated in the group stages..player by player england was better..as far as the disgraceful serbs are concerned as i said before if it was poroven that english players were racially abused by their serbian counterparts, serbia should have been thrown out...may be u cant control so called fans, but the payers have a duty of representation. as far as sven is concerned u may be rite as far as sheikgate is concerned i do not know, but undoubtley sven did not display the behaviousr which was expected from previous managers...
Fair points Klaus but I'm Irish dude, not English. Regarding the other managers, I think it is Svens quite demeanour that has the media on him more than any England manager I can remember for some time. They think he doesn't care because he's not roaring on the sidelines, eyes bulging. Once the English media get a picture (sorry, make one up) it's hard to shake it so I hope Sven does well at City, for himeslf and to shut some doubters up and just let the man do his job
i would want wish ill on anybody, tghere is nothing wring with city... a few years ago the fans were voted away fans of the year at the bridge.. yes once the media get stuck in they wont let go...ask graham turnip or paris hilton.....i am just amazed that anybody could expect a swede brought up in italian football( yes clichee/clichee but true) to play exciting free flowing football..what color is his volvo beige or grey???
