You seem to equate spending money with League position. This might add up with Ferguson & Mourinho but not when you have a genius like Wenger in charge. He's spent net only £3million a year since being at the club. Mourinho spent more in his first two years than Wenger has spent in 10. Arsenal can't compete financially with these clubs but his sharp signings will see Arsenal compete for trophies again. Just because you haven't heard of his signings doesn't mean they won't turn out to be world beaters. I bet you hadn't heard of Vieira when he signed. Da Silva will score more than Torres this season and cost £19 million less.

Arsenal lost only 1 game to the other members of the 'top 4 club'last season. Since then the team will have developed further, with or without Henry. There will be many positive changes to the Arsenal team this coming season. The critical thing is that Arsene Knows. And you don't!!!!!!

I love the way peopel discount Arsenal so easily !! All these transefrs that are mentioned show the value of the players on paper .. Is is equivalent to their value on the pitch ?! Was Cesc worth 'only' 2.5 milion ?! or was Toure worth 'only' half a million ?! And vanPersie worth 'only' 2.5 Million ? Please think atleast twice before writing some cr@p like this ..

but the 'we' in the liverpool section gives away your allegiances, so how strange that you tip them for the title... good luck to you, i respect liverpool, but i think it will be a heck of a lot closer than you think, with you or man utd finishing a couple of points adrift of us... :D »»Arsene Knows««

Ah yes how soon we forget. This time last year Chelsea spent a fortune on ballack and Shevchenko. All the pundits told us that the league title was a shoo in for them. Who won? Not Chelsea. I also remember comments being made a few years back about United shopping in Harrods while Arsenal were buying in Tescos. The reason? Fergie had spent £25m on Veron. Big spending does not guarantee success.

Just because you spend does not mean you will be champions, but then I suppose I am bound to say that being a gooner. Manu - As strong as ever but funnily enough I do not see them as being any stronger than last season, but I still make them strong favourites. Chelsea - Not much change but they will be thereabouts, although I have a feeling they have now been 'rumbled' by the rest of the EPL so all I feel is top four but not champions. Liverpool - Think they will have problems with so many additions to the squad, can't see them getting their act together and gelling enough to pull it off this year, maybe next if they really gel. Arsenal - Who knows ??? I certainly don't being a humble gooner... However, can you ever write off Wenger and his team ? With some new, virtually unheard of names, who is to say Le Prof wont do it again and unearth some gems as he did with Vieira, Henry, etc. He seems to be able to raise someone at the 'top' of their game another 20-30%. If he can manage to get his boys t

I hate to say it but I think Chelsea will win it. ManU were not really convincing against the better teams last season and will be found out this year, Liverpool have too many new players to start challenging until later in the season and Arsenal will probably be just a little too inconsistent to mount a sustainable challenge for top spot, although should finish in the top 3. All that from a Spurs fan!!

aresenal lost one game to top 4....but lost to west ham.
by bulldoggie on July 16, 2007
bollock!...walcott 12 million, Reyes 17 million, Jeffer 10 million, R Wright 6 million...genius eh?
by Angulo on July 16, 2007
Why spend when you have quality? Just put one of current arsenal players on market and find out if he will cost less the 16Million. I think if denilson was available now, he would cost more than what Manure paid for Nani (as bayern or AC to tell you as they wanted to sign him) and that saying that Arsenal will not be in the top 4 because of not spending is s***t.
If you reckon spurs will finish above Arsenal then, just like most of the other comments say, you know nothing about football. Go back to bingo calling or knitting, maybe you could be an expert at one of those, and I wont even charge you for my talent spotting skills.

Spending $$$ (or lack thereof) is an easy argument and requires no analysis on your part. Acquisitions and sales must add to the team. On paper Henry looks a massive loss (and he is) but Arsenal's midfield created enough chances to beat ANY team. Arsenal doesn't need to replace Henry with another creator of goals (like a Tevez) and spend stupid money getting him. AW bought someone who finishes the chances efficiently(Eduardo), which is what the team needed. OH, and the transfer window is far from over & AW regularly buys late as prices come down once the money bags have spent theirs...

I'm a Spurs fan, imo the top four will be the same as last year, with Spurs, Everton and the Barcodes scrapping it out for fifth and sixth. The winners will be UTD, second Chelsea, with Liverpool and Arse scapping it out for 3rd and 4th. Liverpool have bought well but as a result of all the new players the side may take a while to bed down. I expect them to really get moving around November but by that time it will be too late. Arsenal are not as damaged as everyone seems to make out, they've a young team full of exciting talent, they'll be well served by last season's cup exploits and in key places they have experience and world class ability. With Fabregas in the side they have quite possibly the best midfielder in world football, Gilberto is Brazil's captain and, as of last season, a goal scorer. Sagna's great, Clichy, Toure, Gallas the list goes on, now it seems they're on the brink of signing some Argie no ones ever heard of for £15m and whats'the betting Wenger pulls another rabbit out of the hat?

Nani and Anderson are good players, but I would give Sir Alex an F for spending that kinda money on them. The current transfer market is insane and the wise are Arsenal, who spend within their means. The rest are just trying to buy the championship at all costs. Why don't we wait till year end to see who spent wisely.
None of which is to do down the improvements my own team has made, while still odds against, our chances of making top four have definitely shortened. Contrary to what a previous poster claimed, winning the prem is not about winnning the top four battles, it's about beating the rest. The rest have improved and while we dispatched our top ten rivals with relative ease last year, Arsenal struggled against a more physical approach. There's also been much written about the Arsenal youth, but under the stewardship of ex-arse, Comolli and the tutelage of skills coach Ricardo Moniz, we've quite a crop coming to fruition ourself. We're a young side, younger than Arse and after last year's experience fighting on multiple fronts we'll have learned a lot. We have an incredible strike force and are now strenghtening the squad rather than just trying to sign marquee players ala Toon. Next year will be closer and there's is a chance we'll pinch a place or two, but it's only a chance, the reality is the top four of last

For a start, Malouda wasnt signed as a replacement for Robben. Also, Chelseas squad is good enough for them not needing to buy this summer. Liverpool have bought some good buys, but it remains to be seen how well they play in the premiership. Man Utd and Chelsea will still be the top two i reckon, but Chelsea should win back the premiership next season. Arsenal havent replaced Henry, and their other strikers arent that great. Van Persie is their best, while adebayor i think just played amazing for him last season. Spurs wont finish in the top 4 as they have a crap midfield, and they seem to lose matches that people think they will win.

So the clubs that spends the most wins the most? Jeeeezus. How about developing young players? How about tuning your current team with the right purchases? Not just wasting clubs money on "big-name" signings just for show. I'm not just talking about Chelsea, ManU, L'pool and Tottenham, but Portsmouth, Man C and West Ham also have new found money to spend and if you believe Spuds will finish above Arsenal with their current crop, you're sadly mistaken. Not just because Trottinham have an awful midfield, but just because they don't have the guts to finish above 5th spot. Imagine; S**rs in the Champions League? It will happen the day oinking animals with hoofs fly by my window...

It has to be a scouser writing this artickle. Torres apart liverpool have not signed anyone worth writing about so how is this miracle transformation about to happen?? Manchester United have added to their title winning squad, Chelsea still very strong and will be there in the top two. How anyone can write of Arsen Wengers teams off beats me espesially when we all saw their kids play last year, some of their football was close to that of Manchester United's. Out of the top 4 Liverpool seemed to have the least chance for any success this season.

The worse thing about this time of year is all the yaking that goes on. We're going to win the league Arsenal fans think they'll win the league, doubtful but possible, Liverpool fans think we'll win the league, much as I'd love it I don't see it THIS SEASON, Manu fans are convinced beyond belief they're nailed on certain to win it and Chavski in my view are favourites. My problem with this article Tom is your argument we spent loads we'll win the league, Cisse, Diouf, Diao and Cheyrou should teach you something spending big guarentees nothing. Houllier learned that after his £20 million spend in 2002, for 3 years he build Liverpool into a solid team, difficult to beat succesful in cups WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? I believe Rafa is much better but its 2002 again so reign in your expectations and see how we go this season.

"Da Silva is no spring chicken and little is known of the other two." Absolutely full of shit. Just because you don't hear about these players on Sky Sports doesn't mean they are worth nothing. Jesus, after 10 years of seeing Wenger operate you'd think people would hold his talent spotting in a bit higher regard but obviously not. So, Eduardo was the best striker in Croatia, Sagna was the best right back in France and Fabianski was the best goalkeeper in Poland last year. That's enough for me. Better than a mediocre winger with potential that won't necessarily be brought to the fore by Benitez (Babel), a downright average midfielder who was almost relegated (Benayoun) and a striker with bags of ability but unproven in a big club and has never hit more than 20 goals a season from open play (Torres), two of which paid at outrageously exorbitant prices. I know which option I'm happier with (before a ball has been kicked, mind)

I dont what the last guy was thinking because liverpools defence is alloverthe place and manchesters isnt for a start and Carlos Tevez is nothing special-just another luis saha i my opinion.
by Paulie on July 16, 2007
This article has no sound reasoning if you take into account of past experiences. Since when does new players ever equate to immediate success, most players require half a season before they even perform to their potential. There's one thing that money can't buy and that's time for the chemistry of the team to gel. The sound reasoning would be this all transfer are unknown in terms of outcome players that are good on paper may not shine in their new clubs or setups... or has this guy forgot about Shevchenko, veron, etc

Sit down, the top three are miles better than Spurs still but i think Arsenal aren't the force they once were. Still cant see past Chelsea for the title, very much doubt Utd will do as well this year as last and it will be interesting to see how Liverpool fair. Spurs for forth i reckon...
