Good points made, i think there are some who are getting carried away with what he could achieve, but i think he is the right man for the job.

MOL will take the Villans onwards and upwards. I think any Villa fan would be lying if he said that he wouldnt be more than happy with a few season knocking on the door of the top six and the odd European scalp. Something to Cheer is all we need short Term. Long Term we want Cups, both domestic and European. Be able to attract Star Names away from the capital and dare I say it, A premier league title?......I think so! Come On the Vill

I think you conveniently forgot to mention that Villa flirted with relegation last year and were largely atrocious overall. The good run at the end of the season and the first few weeks saved his life. Villa have found themselves drift away into mid-table obscurity over the past few years having been a top four side years ago and competing for the title one glorious season not too long ago. Now though I cannot see them breach the top 6, never mind top 4, anytime soon. The likes of Spurs and Everton are better sides and are further ahead in their development with better managers at tghe helm. Time will tell, but Reo-Coker will hardly set pulses racing, abysmal last season and Harewood scored 4 goals. Forgive us all if we aren't as optimistic as the Villa fans clearly are. Premier league title Anthony? Cop on mate, you haven't a prayer, long temr or otherwise

both managers came from lower leagues with the chance to manage a genuinely massive club, Celtic are not massive, merely a big fish in a small pond, mark my words, 2-3 seasons of moderate success, top 6-8 finishes, odd little cup runs, and the novelty will wear off, the signing of Hare-brain has led me to cancel my season ticket, as I beleive I have been the victim of a deception, with the promise of world class signings, and then this buffoon ( Hare-brain) turns up, and we are then linked with Anthony Gardner, someone pass me a rope please. I can see lots of saturday afternoons on the river bank this year

After so much stagnation and even decline, Martin O'Neill is definitely the right man to lift the Villa out of the depressing years. Given time, there's no reason why he can't start to attract star players, but it will take time. However, his man management skills are beyond reproach and he will most certainly get the best from those players already at the club and those he brings in. The youth system at Villa is excellent and if O'Neill can bring some of those youth players through, the future bodes well. Will he move on? Villa fans are notoriously fickle (who can blame us after the Doug Ellis years) but if we can be patient, there is no doubt in my mind that the club will continue to make great strides forward. I am convinced he will succeed at Villa Park.

What is the author of this article going on about?? He is obviously wearing his claret and blue tinted spectacles. Signing two players such as Reo Coker and Harewood does not turn a team into a top 4 side. They both struggled in a team which only just stayed in the premiership last term, and arguably had a better squad and team than that of Aston Villa. They will be playing with worse players at Villa this year, and will struggle even more so than last season. Top 4? Surely, your having a laugh??

This man was made a hero at Celtic Park. He jumped ship and left us at a stage when his squad was getting past it and Henke had announced his departure to Barca. He left us in the Lurch to look after his wife. 1 year later back in football at Villa (sleeping giants) my a**e. STILL MUST BE GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR PUTTING 8 OR 9 MILLION IN THE BANK ACCOUNT. Mark my words people of Birmingham he'll do the same to you

O'Neill is definitely who we need right now, and I'll be more than happy with slow but sure progress. I'm being realistic, as I'm sure most fans and Mr O'Neill himself are. Regular top ten finishes will be a marked improvement and something to build on. Up The Villa !

Can I remind everyone that we sold Crouch for £2 million, and 18 months later he is an England player. My point being dont judge any player by his performances for his previous club. If any manger can get the best out of playes it is MON. Remember todays average player can turn into tomorrows Peter Crouch!

Boys and girls, Rome wasnt built in a day, and neither for that matter were Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool or Spurs. All four have taken several years to become the perenial top 4 contenders, and have done so from building from the bottom up. All we Villa fans are saying is that that the building blocks are now being put in place for villa to gradually build. How many times did we here that Man U's domination of English football was over, only for them to win the league last year, and probably again this year. And we all know a Liverpool fan that has taken great pleasure in telling us for each and every of the last five seasons that this is there year. Villa are a club that is rebuilding and they will be doing so for several years to come, but it WILL happen and villa will be pushing for honours again.

Shane Robinson, I would worry about the £20 odd million you have spent on Torres cause he will flop. Most strikers who do well in Spain, leave it in Spain. And at Villa Park last season the two worst teams I saw were Everton and Liverpool so you hardly set the prem alight yourselves. Spurs were one of the best and are desevedly where they should be, and will probably be above you this coming season. All we needed was a decent finisher last season because the amount of missed chances we had were absolutely ridiculus. Reo-Coker is a good player and Harewood is a snip at £3.7m and you can't blame them for last season as there was big, big issues going on at West Ham from the boardroom right through to the team. Martin O'Niell will take it steady at Villa and we have some of the best young English talent around such as Young, Gabby, Moore, Reo-Coker and Gardener plus Cahill is starting to mature. Bouma has found his place at leftback and if Luarsen can stay fit, he is a class centerback. We will be stronger and

Thanks Astonmilan for the Torres prediction. You sound so certain! Can you give me the lotto numbers too? Promise I will throw ya a million or two. Good girl
you're club has no prestige and you make yourself look very ignorant and lacking in football knowledge when come out with such drivle!!
I beg to differ you imbecile. Did you not know that Aston Villa was a founder member of the Football League ? That we were formed in 1874 thats 14 years before you, with a footballing history far greater than yours. Yes we have stuttered over the bast 10 years, but we will be back and Martin O'Neill is leading that revolution.

The first ever non-Latin side to win the European Cup, never mind British !! Oh, and by the way we have the records for the best attended league AND cup games in world football !! We're competing in Europe every year with a fraction of the budget even the sheettest English side get in TV money

Nice article, some good points. Firstly, I would argue that Martin O'Neill is a manager with World Class credentials. Of that there can be no mistake. The manner of his success at Celtic was greater than the success itself. He brought stability to a club that had been turmoil for much of the previous 15years- and reclaimed a league title in staggering fashion in his first full season. He took a team from the Scottish league to a European final. He won three league titles, loosing the other two on the final day of the season - one on goal difference. He took Celtic into four Champions League campaigns, making them virtually unbeatable at home. Tactically, O'Neill is up there with the best of them. This will be proven in the premiership this season. And to a great extent demonstrated through his consistent success from Wycombe through to Celtic. If there is one question mark I would place over O'Neill it would be his dealings in the transfer market. O’Neill doesn’t buy footballers, he buys
...O’Neill doesn’t buy footballers, he buys people. He likes to be sure that the players he is brining in not only have the physical ability, but the mentality and attitude that HE feels is necessary to be part of his squad. The latter is only something that can be established by working with an individual and being in their company for a period of time. It is for this reason he regularly signs former players and often seems reluctant to commit to a deal. He doesn’t like World Class players; he prefers World Class ABILITY. By purchasing the finished article you purchase an ego. Egos are difficult to control, would upset a finely balanced dressing room and may even question the authority of this strict disciplinarian. By investing in ability, attitude and potential you have a player that is receptive to the teachings of a man who has been and done it all – on the park and in the dugout. In my humble opinion I believe the foundations are being set for a successful Villa, and that O’Neill will be at
...the helm for at least the next five years. Defining success however is a little trickier. This year I expect nothing more than a top ten finish. Anyone who thinks this team, AT THIS POINT IN TIME, has the ability for anything more is slightly delusional. The Premiership, despite its excitement and razzmatazz, is as predictable as the SPL. As entertaining as it will be to watch, anyone with any degree of impartiality would agree: come April next year, the title will be contested once again by the spending giants of Chelsea and Manchester United.

Mon is def a good tactician with great understanding of the game. However, his choice of style is arguably robust and lacking sophistication. He has always went for thetarget man and physical midfield that wins percentage ball. This arguably only gets you so far in world football aginst the top teams but at moment is good enough for villa. Also the joker who thinks celtic are not a massive club has obviously had the experience of supporting a big team and playing in big games. He should check out our impecable european home record and as said thats without the tv money villa used to get to an impressive 11th !
