Tottenham's philosophy on buying young up-and-coming players has proved effective thus far. However, the next step is still a big step and the answer may lie away from the youth section.
The answer is simply Ricardo Quaresma - the boy is as good as Cristiano Ronaldo but seems to have gone unnoticed despite tearing opponents apart for Portugal and Porto (remember the games against Chelsea?). He has the ability to turn a match in an instant and solve all Spurs' problems on the left. It was reported that Athletico Madrid and Liverpool were interested and that bids around £15m would be accepted. With the sales of Mido, Hossam Ghaly and then possibly Wayne Routledge, the funds should not be a problem.
However, now that a match-winner can be found, Spurs will still need somebody who can control a football match. When Edgar Davids was bought, he injected new life into the team and Spurs are crying out for that experience - an individual who can win a match by himself in order to secure Champions League football. The top four all have (or maybe in Arsenal's case had) someone that would control the game from midfield and the potential to win it by themselves: (Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, Steven Gerrard and now Fernando Torres, Cesc Fabregas and formerly Thierry Henry).
Tottenham have Dimitar Berbatov but nobody who will dictate or turn a match (arguably Robbie Keane and Aaron Lennon, but not regularly). Quaresma can provide them with that match-winning ingredient but Spurs will still not dominate games for sustained periods against better teams.

While everyone is welcome to their opinion, I am not convinced you are correct. You seem to miss the fact that Quaresma was noticed by a big club, Barcelona and moved their for 6 million Euros. He did very little and then refused to play for Frank R. A move to Porto beckoned and while he has done well there, you have to remember the Portugese league is nowehere near the Premier League and consistency is key. I would much prefer someone like Gamst Pederson to be at Spurs next season.

Too much Champ Manager for you my friend, oh ad it's Zokora, not Zakora.
by Yid for life on July 25, 2007
If that actually did happen Roman would rip teams apart on his own he is on another level. A player like him would fill the mould of carrick or actually go one better I believe. Petrov would be a better addition than quaresma. My opinion.

Awful piece, awfully written!!!! Back to the "1000 monkeys with a 1000 typewritters" room with you!

we need a balance and jol cant seem to accept that it's been a problem for a couple of years now and even now he seems to be leaving it late again? my question is who will we get if we sell chimbonda? and what the hell is hughton still doing there all back four last season were internationals and yet at times look'ed like an audition for a keystone cops film or you've been framed

And while we're at it, we should buy Ronaldinho, Kaka and Messi? Would all be very nice, but until we're in the Champions League, and in it on a regular basis, I can't see us attracting the very top players just yet. In time, yes, but not this season.

My heart sinks every time I click on a Newsnow link and it takes me here. Awful 'writing', made up stories and no fact-checking whatsoever. Seriously, this could well be the worst blog in the history of the Internet.

As we need proven in the premiership quality its got to be morten gamst pederson, he beats people easily and can cross a ball and he is surely ready to better himself. We deffinately need a dictating midfielder but who is probably the 20 million pound question at this stage spurs cannot take a chance we need an instant hit maybe riquelme could be the man.

Over a creative midfielder?, we scored goals without too much of problem.its conceding them thats the problem. A good defensive/holding midfielder, to compliment the defenders we've purchased..and decent tactics at set pieces would remedy many of last seasons errors, or is that too obvious

Oi, Stuart (25 / 07 / 2007 13:41) Ronaldinho, Kaka and Messi cant play together on champ manager, its always better when I drop Messi. My opinion, we should play Routledge on the left and see waht happens then that will give us time to get someone in during the Jan window. Will will still do fine without a real LW for now.

I just watched some stuff on youtube of the man. He looks pretty cool. Nice moves, flicks and stuff. However i dont know... He allways goes towards the centre. I didnt see 1 cross. I'd like a winger with nice crosses.. considering it's not Lennons speciality?

Despite comments so far posted much of this article has credit. Spurs centre of midfield is SOFT that is my main worry for the season

How can anyone consider Routledge for anything other than the transfer list. Watched him in the friendly in South Africa last night and he was awful - a class below the rest of the team. Taraabt however looks a real prospect with all the tricks. Has the same build and approach to the game a Cristiano Ronaldo and also tends to cut in and get his shots away. If Jol can control this bloke and show him that it's a team game and not a one-man show, he could be our answer down the left. It took Fergie a season to slow down the step-overs and tricks but now that Ronaldo realises his role in the team, his contributions are immeasurable

I agree that we are lacking the "magical player" in the middle and RC can be deadly on his day but is it a reality that these players will go to Spurs?
by Sam on July 25, 2007
I'm sure you're a huge spurs fan and all but I having read your article I find it hard to take you seriously. You're right we need someone who can boss the midfield but thats hardly a revelation, we all know that. Also just want to point out the we have a player called Zokora (not Zakora). COYS
by jols a fool on July 25, 2007
spurs midfield is pants, whats the point in having 4 up front if you have no midfielders to deliver. u need a fabregas badly and a decent left winger secondly. why does jol seem to not see this? he has the wrong priorities imo
by Brapasaurus on July 25, 2007
Nolan for that bit of fire in midfield. Petrov or MG Pederson would be ideal on the left. Quaresma wd probably cost too much but wd be worth a bid...

What some of you don't realise is that this site is for fans to give opinions and is not a sounding base for journos. At least the lad had the bottle to put pen to paper and got across a valid point. Well done mate. Don't let the b*****s grind you down.

Not sure about Quaresma, I haven't seen enough of him but anything would be better than having no left sided midfielder again. I think Bale will be fantastic but would prefer to see him as a creative defender. I'd agree with the need for a holding midfielder, I think both JJ and Zakora are great on their day but would like to see something more solid. Only problem with Riquelme is he's very hit and miss to.
by Danny Boy on July 25, 2007
Good article besides the spelling mistakes. Quaresma was good enough to rip apart the Chelsea defence, has Champ League and International experience and will cause havoc to any defender. Although I would have priority in the CM as JJ is never going to dominate a match - we can dream about Riquelme and why not place a cheeky bid as the worst that can happen is he does not come.

You're spot on! I've seen Quaresma, play for years and he should be in a Spurs shirt it's what we need and would provide a creative edge and cover on the left

It's about time someone cottened on to how good this guys is! He is awesome and I have been calling for signature for a while now. I really do belive he is the answer to our left sided problems. Over the last two years this guy has really bucked up his ideas in his defensive duties too! And his skill levels are immense.. just go on youtube to check out some of his highlights. His movement is excellent his touch is world class and he is the type of player that can take win a game with his amazing skill, just like ginola used to do!! I really want us to sign this kid!! Yeah I know some of you are saying that he didn't do anything at barca but he was alot younger and was up against ronaldinho, eto etc for a place in the team so its no wonder he only played a few times. He has developed so much now and is a much better player. Please please please sign him. He is sooooo much better than petrov who lets be fair hasn't done anything since he left germany!! Plus petrov is 28 and riquelme isn't getting any younger..
