If Spurs were looking for some indication of the kind of season that might be ahead of them, they will have been mighty pleased with their pre-season safari to South Africa.
Pirates did manage to pull one back near the end through a thrice-taken penalty after Chimbonda had pulled down Excellent Walaza. Cerny saved the first spot kick from Walaza down to his left and the re-taken one by the same player down to his right, before Kamwendo slotted home, but Spurs held on.
This was a good follow up to the first game in the Vodacom Challenge which resulted in a 2-1 victory over Kaiser Chiefs, notable for an incident in which Bent's former mate at Charlton, Shaun Bartlett, collided with Kaboul as he tried to head clear a low ball and put him out of the game with a few lost teeth.
Perhaps we have seen enough in two game to suggest that Arsene Wenger and Rafa Benitez will not dismiss Tottenham's chances of reaching the top four too hastily.

Spurs still have Mido, King, Lennon, Bale, Ekotto, Lee at home....in addition to almost two differnt teams in played in two games in SA.....oh yes! Ross who has rejected Chelsea and Liverpool just signed...Petrov is at WHL doing his medical now.

Hmmmm. Yes it was Hud who passed the ball. We were a bit shakey at the back against an inferior opposition. Yes Kaboul did well at times but a 'rock' at the back? Taarabt as man of the match?. He certainly tried hard but didn't look settled and perhaps a bit selfish at times. I am not a pessimist at all, I whole heartedly think we are going to pip the scum this year and am positive about all our new signings. Against Orlando Pirates we were O.K against very ordinary opposition. Even without our best 11 on the field we should be knocking 5 past a team like this? I am hoping Taarabt is going to come right but he needs to put his foot on the ball and look up a bit more. Sorry but this is a crap piece of journalism, you need to get you head out of the clouds.

you think this was jols best 11? no king, lennon, berbatov, keane, robinson, zakora, bale etc this must be probably the worst football blog site going, save for the gooner scum equivalent one !!! coys
by delfo on July 25, 2007
agree with yid. nice to win again but i'm not getting carried away. "Jol selected what might well turn out to be his best eleven" not a chance, tarabt and kaboul wont be starters and neither will that strike force. i hope we play our strongest possible 11 for saturday so we can have some idea of where we are. reading sportingo articles :/
far from it infact, but was nice to see different players, shows the depth of the squad, what dyou guys think our best 11 is?, post your thoughts i reckon robinson (even tho i think cerny is better) bale, king, dawson, chimbonda, lennon, jenas, zokora, petrov (lol) probably*, tarrabt or steed and berbatov and keane but if defoe gets a run of games he will be on fire and bent looks good aswell he was ripping past people he is fast we have so many options what dyou think

Following Leeds ? Er, don't think you could accuse Arsenal of overspending. Think you'll find the pressure is on Spurs given the amount of money they have spent trying to secure a top 4 finish.

As ever, the season has not started yet, but spuds have the title sown up. Come on guys have you learned nothing? I support The Arsenal, and appreciate you have a good team, but your problem was never scoring goals but keeping them out. How have you strengthened in defence? Bale is 17 for crying out loud! If you got a powerhouse in midfield and another 2 centre halves you MIGHT compete, but not this year methinks!
by Jimbob on July 25, 2007
I'm a Spurs fan myself but this was a seriously deluded article. Is it supposed to be journalism or just a biased rant? This kind of crap is embarassing for Spurs fans... Two victorious friendly's and you're talking about betting on Spurs winning the league? There's a reason the odds are 66-1.
by CMF on July 25, 2007
Spurs have a middle table defence, if not a bit worse (Bale or no Bale). Midfield is of UE*FA place quality. E*xcellent attack though, no argument. They will leave the rest for dust in making 6th this season !!
by Chase on July 26, 2007
Playing well against poor South African sides is one thing, challenging for the Prem title is quite another, maybe they will have a shot at Arsenal's Champions League spot, no way in hell they are better than Liverpool though with the transfers they have made, oh and as CMF put it, you defense still lacks the quality of the big four, as does your central midfield...

Pre-Season results count for nowt, lets see how Spurs do in the Premier League, they could do well and break into the top 4 but that will only come at the expense of Arsenal (if the Wenger situation isn't sorted by christmas) Pre-Season talk bores me come back next Easter and then we'll talk
by PEACE CUP on July 26, 2007
when they won that mickey mouse trophy and beat lyon they were gonna win the league then to.61 and never again 61 and never again. yiddos ask grandaddy what is what like to challenge for the league cos its something you'l never see to talk about...hahahahahahahahaha
by jumbo from the lane on July 26, 2007
im a yid better than man u? no better than chelski?no better than liverpool?no catching up on le scum?yeah even at 66-1 i wouldnt put a quid on it. we need to start beating the top 4 teams and as yet we aint been doing that. i think we are on the up and this season have a real chance of a bit of silverwear or top 4. as the calm down calm down fan said back 4 needs to tuffen up as the boys up front are doing their job. get a left sided player and bed them down and i think we may have a good chance of getting some where this season ;-) COYS COYS COYS

Just wanna ask CMF if we are gonna finish 6th, who's gonna finish above us i 5th (if we assume the top 4 will be made up of Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool)? Anyway, I would really like to ask some Spurs fans to calm down a wee bit as well as at the same time asking some Arsenal (and other) fans to look at our current situation realistically as I try to. Tottenham, no matter how much it hurts everyone are improving, to what degree we cant tell from playing a tri-team tournament in SA. However, the past 2 seasons should point to the fact that we are the 'best of the rest' and have the most realistic chance of breaking the monopoly of the top 4. FACT, deal with it. However, at the same time this does not give us the god given right to assume we will do so, yes Tottenham have improved and yes Arsenal have been weakened. Sorry but its true, no team in the world could lose Henry and maintain that they are stronger without him. So in conclusion can Spurs overhaul Arsenal for fourth spot this season? Yes!
by BADGER on July 26, 2007
Lets be honest no where near the best team we had stalteri at left back i mean come on we couldnt wait to get him outta right back nevermind left. but on a lighter not yeah i do think we`ll do good this year more of a challenge for the top 4 but not as easy as some folk are making out
by John Baldock on January 20, 2008
