Yesterday, I had an article published about the way that I think Tottenham can continue their forward progress and aim to qualify for the Champions League. For me, Porto's Ricardo Quaresma was the type of player that we need to fill the problematic left midfield spot, while our central midfield still lacks someone to dominate games and keep possession the way that the teams above us do.

Granted the suggestion of Quaresma and Riquelme signing for Spurs may be deemed a tad ambitious but why shouldn't the club be ambitious? Stranger things have happened in football.

Why would Michael Owen choose Newcastle? Why would Woodgate choose Middlesbrough? Or Tevez and Mascherano choose West Ham?

'Spurs need to sign players who are going to make the difference between where we are and where we aim to be, and Ricardo Quaresma is just that type of player'

Spurs need to sign players who are going to make the difference between where we are and where we aim  to be, and Ricardo Quaresma is just that type of player.  Over the last few years his potential has started to shine through and he can conquer the Lane in the same way that Ginola did!  What is the point in signing another who just does a job in the team and nothing more, like, in my opinion, Morten Gamst Pedersen would?

Pedersen may be Blackburn's best player but Malbranque was also Fulham's best player and both players would only be squad fillers for any of the Big Four. And the same should apply to us, if that is where we aspire to be.  We need players with the experience of winning trophies to blend in with the talented youth that we have and Quaresma and someone like Riquelme fit the bill.

What would Tottenham fans prefer, for Spurs to show ambition and really fight to sign a potential world-beater like Quaresma to push for Champions League at all costs, or carry on settling for the "best-of-the-rest" and sign "steady" players who will make us a better squad. Hoping that the likes of Berbatov will be happy playing in the UEFA Cup with no big names coming in to match his talent can be a dangerous game. After all, it cost that other lot Thierry Henry.
