Yesterday, I had an article published about the way that I think Tottenham can continue their forward progress and aim to qualify for the Champions League. For me, Porto's Ricardo Quaresma was the type of player that we need to fill the problematic left midfield spot, while our central midfield still lacks someone to dominate games and keep possession the way that the teams above us do.
Granted the suggestion of Quaresma and Riquelme signing for Spurs may be deemed a tad ambitious but why shouldn't the club be ambitious? Stranger things have happened in football.
Why would Michael Owen choose Newcastle? Why would Woodgate choose Middlesbrough? Or Tevez and Mascherano choose West Ham?
Spurs need to sign players who are going to make the difference between where we are and where we aim to be, and Ricardo Quaresma is just that type of player. Over the last few years his potential has started to shine through and he can conquer the Lane in the same way that Ginola did! What is the point in signing another who just does a job in the team and nothing more, like, in my opinion, Morten Gamst Pedersen would?
Pedersen may be Blackburn's best player but Malbranque was also Fulham's best player and both players would only be squad fillers for any of the Big Four. And the same should apply to us, if that is where we aspire to be. We need players with the experience of winning trophies to blend in with the talented youth that we have and Quaresma and someone like Riquelme fit the bill.
What would Tottenham fans prefer, for Spurs to show ambition and really fight to sign a potential world-beater like Quaresma to push for Champions League at all costs, or carry on settling for the "best-of-the-rest" and sign "steady" players who will make us a better squad. Hoping that the likes of Berbatov will be happy playing in the UEFA Cup with no big names coming in to match his talent can be a dangerous game. After all, it cost that other lot Thierry Henry.

this article is spot on. We are 1 or two top quality players away from really challenging, not a few squad players away from challenging (MGP). Lets get this point through to martin jol!

Petrov's off the agenda, Dyer's old, Prince I don't know and Pederson I don't fancy any more than Malbranque, I would agree with this piece and feel that he is the man to slot in at left wing.

Read the 2 pieces now and agree with the chap. Quaresma is quality and can be a God at the Lane, and if we can sign a quality CM like Riquelme then we would be going places. Still concerned about the defence, especially cover in wider areas for Chimbonda and Bale. Kaboul seems decent cover for Dawson and King but unsure about Rocha!

Great article fella. This sort of player would get into most starting 11 and that's what we need, players to take us onto another level. Quaresma ruined the best defence in the prem last season and would love to see him do it week-in week-out in a Spurs shirt.

If we get a player such as RC, other top players would follow and we would have more chance of keeping our stars like Berba and Lennon, which means CL would be a real possibility. COYS lets get Jol to sign this lad and others will follow suit

I really do agree with you lot on this one, in the quaresma would be an unbelievable addtion to the spurs squad and starting 11 but why will he chose us over the likes of liverpool, real madrid etc. It will never happen, oh well another season without a left winger!!!!!
by yid at work on July 26, 2007
Would love to see him with us but can we realistically get him? Oh well, you never know unless you try! Come on Martin, give it ago COYS

"Why would Michael Owen choose Newcastle? Why would Woodgate choose Middlesbrough? Or Tevez and Mascherano choose West Ham? " Money. $ £ € be it what it may... Money talks... we aren't into hiring mercenaries, and long may it continue.

The reason Owen went to Newcastle was wages, Woodgate had few other suitors and the Argies went to West Ham because of MSI. Spurs won't break the bank on wages so we'll always be under-dogs for big names. Would be nice but can't see it.

Woodgate to Boro, Owen to Newcastle - They went because they weren't playing for Real Madrid and got offered ridiculous sums of money to play for them and nobody else wanted them. Tevez & Mascherano didn't have a choice about where to go since Joorabchian decided that when he thought he would manage to buy West Ham. Quaresma is a completely different situation. He plays regularly and would have a choice of a number of top clubs if he chose to leave. We could be one of them but let's not kid ourselves that he would choose us over champions league.
Simao has gone to Atletico Madrid to replace Petrov and is on £70k a week

Yeah, but...the players have to actually want to come to the Lane, and sad to say, at the moment we are not a Champs League team - making it just that wee bit more difficult attracting players. Also not sure if your analysis of MGP is correct; and your analysis of Malbranque is based on coming into a team half-way through the season, while recovering from a serious injury, getting to know new team mates, and not always in his optimum position. Other than that, yeah, it would be really good if we could sign your nominations:-)

Interesting article, I agree that Spurs now need to be looking towards signing genuine superstars (or potential superstars) rather than just filling the squad. The sentence that interested me most however was... 'Why would Michael Owen choose Newcastle? Why would Woodgate choose Middlesbrough? Or Tevez and Mascherano choose West Ham? ' There are reasonable explanations for all of the above. Michael Owen was plagued by injury in Spain, in and out of the first team and on a huge wage. Madrid didn't struggle to keep him and the top clubs here didn't challenge the newcastle offer. They were in a position where they needed to replace Alan Shearer and have already got a history of paying vastly inflated wages to attract players to the grim north east. Woodgate was exactly the same, the only difference being that he hails from Middlesborough. Tevez and Mascherano are a different story altogether. They were supplied by a man looking to turn the Hammers into another foreign owned 'Franchise'. T

Liverpool and Newcastle were also after him, he chose middlesborough because he supports them

for us to allow petrov to be taking from under our noses, then the must be something in the pipeline, not necceserely with the players mentioned but something must be negotiating under closed doors, if im wrong then spurs have let us all down cos they know we need a left sided player and if they allowed erricson to nick petrov that easily then i will be very disapointed as he flew over to meet spurs officials originaly, but maybe just maybe spurs pulled out as we may have lined up someone better and younger, what dyou guys think?
by Burnell8 on July 26, 2007
Nani to Man U, Christian Wilhelmsson has gone to Bolton, Martin Petrov to Man City, Richardson to Sunderland, all the left wing targets are slowly running out! Ricardo Quaresma is a must, please Martin Jol im begining to panic!!!!
If Liverpool wanted Woodgate, they would have got him. Unless Middlesbrough are paying him £80,000 a week so would Newcastle!
would like to think that something bigger and better than Petrov is in the pipeline. If not then we are struggling if a player choses City above us! Who knows, maybe Jol is on his laptop in SA and looking at the lad on youtube has encouraged him to go for Quaresma! I can dream when I am bored at work
by Bulletspur on July 26, 2007
While I gree with you about getting Quaresma, you spoilt the argument by comparing him to both Owen and Woodgate. Both only went to these clubs because no one else wanted them because Owen has had his better days behind him and Woodgate was injury prone. Do you honestly think they would have chosen to go to newcastle and Middlesborough had any of the top 4 (and us) wanted them?

Yid-O's comment of "Grim North East" made me laugh. Obviously he's never been and what could be grimmer that sitting in a traffic jam for 4 hours in a journey that would take half an hour in the "Grim North East" :-)

Agree with you 100%. Even better news is that Athletico Madrid were due to buy him this week but have now signed Simao. Porto are willing to sell for around £13 million which i think would be money well spent considering how talented he is. Lennon on the right and Quaresma on the left would put fear through any opposition!!!
by Valle on July 26, 2007
First and foremost because Spurs suck and everyone knows this except the Spurs fans. Both newcastle, boro and now also west ham are bigger and better than spurs. Ur stadium suck, ur training facilities suck, ur trainer sucks and u will never break into top 4.
Some players do still take pride in playing for their hometown team, otherwise gerrard would have been a Chelsea player, shearer a man utd player, and we would have signed downing

Ricardo Quaresma is a class footballer he should be right on the top of spurs shopping list since we just missed out on martin petrov today. quaresma is 22 he has alot of time to improve on his already skillful player. martin petrov is good aswell but he is getting on a bit being 28 as well. he would boost up into the champions league and he can score set up goals cross the ball and he is as good as C.Ronaldo so martin jol if your reading these comments please put in a bid for him because he is better the our LM malbranque
If we
