Another season starts with yet another false dawn for Spurs supporters. I sit here as an Arsenal fan chuckling to myself as once again the spuds have gone from absolute racing certainties for top-four glory to "deserving to be in the Championship", and "we were f***ing sh*t". Not my words, but those of actual supporters of the institution that is Tottenham Hotspur.

Now I am not saying for one moment that the Arsenal are guaranteed to finish above the spuds (although I think we will), but the fans' lack of any kind of stickability (beat that one, Iain Dowie) is quite amazing. Just a few short days ago, spuds up and down the country were predicting the collapse of the Arsenal and even Liverpool empires with such conviction. It seemed it was more or less a foregone conclusion that this time next year, Tottenham would be entertaining Real Madrid at the Lane in the tastiest of Champions League ties.

'Supporting your team means through thick AND thin - not just when you beat Leyton Orient 4-2 pre-season'

But wait, a defeat away to Sunderland, who have quite a bit to prove to their own fans, let alone supporters up and down the land, and it's gloom and doom in the lillywhite half of north London. Now I have a confession to make - I did not actually watch the match at the Stadium of Light  through work commitments. But surely the team that swept aside Leyton Orient in pre-season cannot have been THAT bad?

Is it not possible that Sunderland, managed by a man who never accepts defeat as an inevitable event, inspired by a crowd of nearly 44,000 and playing as though lives were dependant upon the result, may just have (and whisper this) deserved to win?

Of course, much of this article is written tongue in cheek, as I personally wish Tottenham would return to the fiery abyss from which they were spawned. But come on, you spuds, supporting your team means through thick AND thin - not just when you beat Leyton Orient 4-2 pre-season. Or will you be calling for Mr Potato Head to be sacked if victory is not achieved against Everton midweek?
