LONDON - Wycombe Wanderers, Notts County and Chesterfield all took Premier League scalps in the second round of the League Cup on Wednesday night.
Fourth division leaders Wycombe won 2-1 at Fulham, Notts County, who narrowly escaped relegation to the Conference last season, won 1-0 at Middlesbrough while third division strugglers Chesterfield beat Manchester City 2-1.
Free-scoring Jermaine Easter and Tommy Mooney had Wycombe deservedly ahead and they held out after Heidar Helguson headed Fulham back into the game early in the second half.
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate made wholesale changes and the 2004 winners paid the price when Notts County's Congo striker Tcham N'Toya knocked them out with a 26th-minute goal.
Premier League strugglers Manchester City, knocked out by Doncaster last season, took the lead at Chesterfield through Georgios Samaras but Caleb Folan levelled soon after the break and Derek Niven secured the upset win in the 67th minute.
Aston Villa avoided a similar fate as they won 2-1 at Scunthorpe United with two goals by striker Juan-Pablo Angel while Derby County came from 3-0 down with 16 minutes left in normal time to draw 3-3 at Doncaster but lost 8-7 on penalties.
On Tuesday last season's runners-up Wigan Athletic lost 2-0 to third division Crewe Alexandra.
Teams involved in European competition had byes in the second round.
