Everton have made one of their best starts in many seasons - winning their first two matches convincingly and now looking towards the Reading game for their next three points. They are also sitting proudly on top of the Premier League table and there is even talk about them breaking into the top four. So is this brash arrogance, or are David Moyes's boys really destined for the big time?
As the saying goes, the ball is round and anything can happen. But there are a three important factors that can either deflate that ball or make it zip around much faster.
How many more players will Everton bring in? Even though Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Steven Pienaar are quality performers, the squad is still rather threadbare. To last the distance, Moyes really needs to draft in classy players such as Manuel Fernandes and Yakubu, as well as blood a few more youngsters from the academy to provide that necessary cover.
What will the injury list be like? The influential Tim Cahill and James Vaughan are currently in the treatment room, but more importantly, how long will Goodison talisman Mikel Arteta stay free from injury? Arteta draws physical attention in every game that he plays, so Moyes may have to use him more sparingly to try to keep him injury-free.
Who will continue to score the goals? Of the five Everton have netted so far, only one came from a striker - Victor Anichebe. The rest were scored by defenders Joleon Lescott and Alan Stubbs, plus two from midfield dynamo Leon Osman.
My view is that if the Toffees bring in good solid players, keep the injuries to a minimum, and continue to contribute goals from defence and midfield, there will be no stopping them breaking into the top four.

Use Arteta, our most influential, skillfull, assist-grabbing, goal-smashing midfielder sparingly...?

Football is a team sport which is a point the likes of Spurs and even Man United should bear in mind. Of course football teams require good solid players, more importantly however, sound management on and off the field are the essential elements available in abundance in the Everton camp and clearly absent in an overly confident Spurs team. Tens of millions of pounds have been spent by Spurs in the poorly conceived notion that stars make teams. The fact is that a lack of discipline on the field and a chronically immobile defence put together off the field has resulted in the deflation of the Spurs ego. Everton have fantastic management on the field with the likes of Neville and Arteta, the mid field Generals, with superb off the field management by David Moyes and his staff. Get Fernandes back in the fold and Yobo’s mate Yakubu on side then watch out former top four!

It is teamwork that will take us into the top four - it is also a blessing in disguise that we have no "big media names' in the squad, because they come with their own attitudes which often conflicts with good teamwork. Moyes and the rest of his management are doing an excellent job - and what we've doen over the past few seasons is building a solid foundation. I believe this might be our "David vs Goliath" season - watch this space!!

I am so happy with the first two matches that Everton won . I feel pround of them especially when they win 3-1 at spurs . I wake up in the middle of nite ( 3am in singapore time ) to watch the match . Osman and Arteta are playing nicely switching both flank and Johnson do work very hard . Nice game and nice teams . I hope they can keep this up and finish as high as possible .

Great Bet - Everton 6 / 1 without "the big 4" - Boyle Sports.

We have a small(ish) but solid squad of players who feel a pride in wearing the shirt - and that, along with no prima donnas adds to a great squad spirit. We have a fantastic manager and backroom team ably supported by the board, who, despite the lack of a billionaire backer are seemingly coming up with some big money to sign Fernandes and Yakubu. With the acquisition of Baines, Jags and Pienaar we have a healthy competitive spirit for places and quality on the bench (especially when Cahill and Vaughan are back fit). Add to this the best supporters in the country and you have a potent club who are realistic challengers to all the cup competitions and a top 4 berth. The one thing our team has, that Liverpool and Arsenal don't, is steel throughout the team, and this, coupled with promising youngsters and the ambitious professionals already at the club, mean healthy competition and headaches for the millionaire elite. Come on you mighty Blues.

I think Everton Football Club can break into the top 4 at the expense of Arsenal.

so far so good but jeesh people its only 2 games in, yes spurs win was great but they are not manyoo or chelski even tho they spend like them. now, if we roll the mancs or lpool away by similar score.... think the arse and newcastle will make it tough for us to crack top 4, but reckon we can do it. moyes you rock, keep up the great work!

We will only come close to getting the Top 4 if we can wrap Arteta up in cotton wool. We all know he is the most influential player we have and if we get Manny it will be a mouthwatering prospect. However I feel Arteta knows he usually has to support the team himself with his creativity and if he was ever out injured, I don't think Manny could yet take over the mantle. Personally I'd love to see us building on our past experiences in Europe at the expense of a Top 4 place. UEFA Cup finish and a great run if not a trophy domestically/internationally would suit me fine.

What impressed you most most about the win at WHL v Spurs reserves, was it the deflected goal? or even the one where the ball fell to your player or the 38% of possession your team had, get real it was a good win but against a team devoid of 7 first team players, and some reserves playing out of position
