On Sunday Manchester City took on Manchester United. What a game!. OK, so some of the play wasn't great and United had key players missing, but even to a neutral the game had tension and suspense.

Derby games and rivalries are what football is all about. Liverpool v Everton, Sheffield United v Wednesday, Spurs v Arsenal and Rangers v Celtic are always classics. It's not just about the quality of goals and passing - it's about defeating your neighbours, being the best in your city, being the heroes.  And smaller derbies are just as important - imagine the local excitement generated by Burnley beating Blackburn, Wrexham defeating Chester and Ipswich thrashing Norwich.

It's not just in England where rivalries occur. Think of Real Madrid v Athletico, Roma v Lazio, AC v Inter Milan and 1860 Munich v Bayern, all top matches with the fans of each team hating the other. Violence can even occur on occasions as rival fans get going.

'Form can be dismissed when it comes to derby games as players can't fail to be pumped up and ready for action, even if they are the underdogs'

One derby thats stands out is in Turkey, with the Istanbul sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce bitter enemies. Fans at this derby have been covered in meshing to stop items being thrown at them and of course the police presence is always high. This conflict is too much, and although fascinating to see, is not good for the game as a whole.

Good, clean derbies are great for football, especially with the odd yellow card and controversial penalty thrown in.  Form can be dismissed when it comes to these games as players can't fail to be pumped up and ready for action, even if they are the underdogs.

That's what makes these rivalries so important.
