On Sunday Manchester City took on Manchester United. What a game!. OK, so some of the play wasn't great and United had key players missing, but even to a neutral the game had tension and suspense.
Derby games and rivalries are what football is all about. Liverpool v Everton, Sheffield United v Wednesday, Spurs v Arsenal and Rangers v Celtic are always classics. It's not just about the quality of goals and passing - it's about defeating your neighbours, being the best in your city, being the heroes. And smaller derbies are just as important - imagine the local excitement generated by Burnley beating Blackburn, Wrexham defeating Chester and Ipswich thrashing Norwich.
It's not just in England where rivalries occur. Think of Real Madrid v Athletico, Roma v Lazio, AC v Inter Milan and 1860 Munich v Bayern, all top matches with the fans of each team hating the other. Violence can even occur on occasions as rival fans get going.
One derby thats stands out is in Turkey, with the Istanbul sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce bitter enemies. Fans at this derby have been covered in meshing to stop items being thrown at them and of course the police presence is always high. This conflict is too much, and although fascinating to see, is not good for the game as a whole.
Good, clean derbies are great for football, especially with the odd yellow card and controversial penalty thrown in. Form can be dismissed when it comes to these games as players can't fail to be pumped up and ready for action, even if they are the underdogs.
That's what makes these rivalries so important.

Without Doubt Blackburn Rovers against Burnley
by Andy on August 22, 2007
Liverpool - Everton derbies used to be very friendly with fans mixing together, the mood has changed a bit over the past few years, but there isn't the hate you get in glasgow or turkey.

Blackburn v Burnley They can hardly generate a crowd let alone hatred

On your location, If you are lucky enough to be a Londoner, then we have plenty of derbies throughout the season to occupy our thoughts. But the Arsenal game is the fixture most of us look forward to, make no mistake it's intense, pure hatred the games are seldom classics, although the 4-5 game will go down in folklaw. West Ham comes a close second and Chelsea third in must win games, and seeing the delight of the Irons fans preventing us from getting 4th spot is evident thats the feelings mutual.

I always thought Burnley's derby rivals are Rochdale - certainly more of an even contest.

although i am a big evertonian and seen plenty of derbies, i have been unfortunate enough to see a burnley against blackburn game. Now that is hatred!!! It ended with riots and the entire town being trashed. not very memorable

The Old Firm is more than a football game. It's when two army's meet and the selected 11 from each side go out and battle on the field. They say you're safer at the actual stadium than a Glasgow pub.

Man United against Bury. At least they'll be playing them next year at this rate!!!
by Dave on August 22, 2007
Surely it City v United or Celtic v Rangers, but then Scotland is a two horse race, so slightly irrelevant. Arsenal Vs Spurs would come a close third I suppose

Everton-Liverpool. Dont let anybody try to tell you its the 'friendly derby'.It is pure unadulterated hatred from start to finish.People who say different are for some ridiculous reason trying to kid others or themselves.

I was lucky enough to be at man city - united on sunday and thought it was great, really enjoyed it .... Have to say that although the atmosphere was good it was not a patch on rangers - celtic.... the noise is probably only matched or surpassed in south america ....

definately the biggest hatred in the lower leagues!
by Paddy Bonner on August 22, 2007
it isnt even worth debating. I have been to all of the above mentioned derbied, and all other games pPALE in significance to the (admittedly hate filled) energy that surrounds the Glasgow derby. It tension is biult up for the whole week leeding up to it, so that by the time the game kicks off, there is a real sense of the whole city is going to explode.... AND THEN IT DOES! The atmosphere there is like nothin i have experienced anywhere else. The players say the same. Rino gattusso has played in european cup finals (2) for AC and a world cup final for italy. And still insists the atmosphere generated in the Glasgow derby (especially at Celtic Park) is THE most awesome environment he has ever played in. Says a lot in my opinion.

The biggest derby in England is without a doubt Everton Vs Liverpool its none stop fighting on and off the pitch in the pubs afterwards there is bottles getting thrown and fighting everywhere it is mostly down to the fact that the two clubs both have very rich history's.
by liam howard on August 22, 2007
everton and liverpool derbys are the most watched games of the season apart from the fa cup final and because both teams are big top flight team it ads to the drama and tension and also the bragging rights between the to sides is hugely important.
by Scouse Billy on August 22, 2007
Interesting word - personally I enjoy the football. Les, you don't know what you're talking about. Merseyside derbies are about disdain and envy.
by steve on August 22, 2007
as man utd (or trafford utd as we call them )are the most hated and despised football club in the world, can you imagine actually playing a derby against them? it must be the manchester/trafford derby, believe me NOBODY despises utd as much as WE do !!!!!!!!!

The merseyside derby is massive, somehow sky always manage to pick out an Everton and Liverpool fan sitting happily side by side before the game...never in the gladwys street or the kop. They never show them after the game though, they won't be sitting they're joking after the game. Glasgow derby is very hate-filled, but the scottish league is crap, only two teams in it really. Love the atmosphere at merseyside derbys, top class. Alot of banter going around and during the game it is one big battle. Families are divided.
by Nick on August 22, 2007
I support Man. City and enjoy the atmosphere against United. However, for real hatred try Swansea versus Cardiff. Which other local police force produces riot police from ground to station? I went to one in the 70s and witnessed fire being thrown into the rival section? The derby at Lincoln against Grimsby is bad too. Supporters throw coins and stones at each other. Children are just ignored in their mindless violence.
by Real Madrid on August 22, 2007
Real madrid vs Barca might not be a local derby but it must be one of the biggest match in both teams fixtures just like man utd vs chelsea
by MickZippy on August 22, 2007
Surely it City v United or Celtic v Rangers, but then Scotland is a two horse race, so slightly irrelevant. Arsenal Vs Spurs would come a close third I suppose
That makes no sense at all. If a derby match is between two teams with a chance of winning the title then it is MORE passionate and exciting.
yes they are big games, but the atmosphere at chelsea Vs United is nothing on merseyside or glasgow debys
Scouse Billy....either you dont go to the merseyside derbies or when you do you have your eyes closed.Nothing nice about them, even the football is too fast and frantic to be called enjoyable.Get real pal.

Take the relgious aspect out of Rangers/Celtic, it's just another game played four times a season, both sides have domestic success guaranteed from one year to next.Has to be Man City v Utd - pure hatred and nothing to do with religion. How many derbies have been abandoned for half an hour while fans kicked hell out of each other in stands? (Sept 89 5-1 City) City fans continually have to live with having Utd rammmed down their throats 24/7 - they'd rather get relegated than see them win the European Cup. As for Merseyside, embarrassing, they sit next to each other in same stands!
Glasgow derby is very hate-filled, but the scottish league is crap, only two teams in it really.
... oh yeah cos every year in the English premiership there is a different winner ... or is it more likely that one of 2 teams is gonna win it AGAIN ... english pomp yet again.

City against united has to be the derby which generates the most hatred. Being a city fan I know how much the two sets of fans really hate each other. The fans may not be from the same city, mcfc(manchester), united (dublin or london) but there is real hatred betwwen them. This was shown after the final whistle on sunday when the two sets of fans collided in the stands. And I am sure that around the world everybody has a view on the manchester derby.
scooter how many merseyside derbys have you been to? As has been said before it is hatred, sky always pick out 2 people sittin next to each other and they dont stay happy for long. The derbys are massive. as les said the football is too quik to even enjoy. But its the amazing atosphere that is enjoyable. And the city of liverpool is the capital of football.
