Surely Paul Robinson has put the final nail in his coffin with that first-half howler at Wembley last night.
I am a Tottenham fan and although it is pleasing to see so many Spurs players (when fit) involved in the England set-up, I think Robinson should be axed. He has shown time after time that he cannot deal with crosses and the 2-1 defeat by Germany was no exception.
There have been calls from many White Hart Lane fans to oust the former Leeds goalkeeper from the Spurs No.1 jersey - and now England supporters will surely be saying the same about his position for his country.
There are goalkeepers in top form who have good potential that may deserve a shout. Firstly, there is David James. I never thought i would say this but he is definitely an option. His form for Portsmouth has been good, achieving so many clean sheets last season.
There is also Robert Green at West Ham, who has proved himself to be reliable and could be worth a try. Liverpool's Scott Carson is also a keeper with great ability, as is Ben Foster, who is currently injured. All of the above are better than Robinson overall.
England were in cruise mode until Robinson set up the Germans and constant errors should not be tolerated at that sort of level. He has also been at fault for many Tottenham goals in the past 12 months and my opinion is that he should not be in the squad. But will Steve McClaren be strong enough to make that decision?
What do you Sportingo fans think? If you agree, then who should be in?

have you ever seen david james in goal and did you see the howler against mido at the weekend that says it all

I'm sorry but you can see who listens to the "pundits" and who analyses the game. Robbo was caught out by a freak miskick in the same way as Seaman was against Brazil. If the ball had been kicked correctly it would have been a cross into the centre of the box where keeper and defence were all waiting. You can't allow for freak accidents and complain about the keeper. The defense failed to react to his initial recovery but you still don't see anyone slagging them off. Whos Matt Green????? makes it hard to take any points made in this article seriously when you dont even know who your talking about???
by waddle on August 23, 2007
Everyones quick to blame Robinson, but i don't think he could have done much with it. The German shanked the cross and it was under the crossbar so it couldn't be pushed over. It was unfortunate at worst. Robinson has not been himself the last year bt this incident is no reason to crawl back to calamity James. As for anyone else, i don't think there is a much better choice.

FFS The end? What for a couple of dodgy games for England. Do me a favour. I agree James could come in but Robinson hasn't become terminally and irreversibly rubbish
by Carl on August 23, 2007
To be fair to Robbo, it was a miskick and he got unlucky that the ball fell to ze german. I do feel that the media are on a tottenham witch hunt and seeing how Lehman made two shocking errors playing for Arsenal, i cannot believe how everyone is getting on Robbo's back. Plan and simply, he is England's No1. We have been through the James years and Green is not good enough.
by Tom on August 23, 2007
When fit, foster is the best goalkeeper england have. It doesnt matter if the player 'shanked' the ball, or that it was a 'freak goal' it simply was no way near good enough. His positioning at times is terrible. Although he is a very good shot stopper Robinson needs time out to sort his head. His not been the same since the world cup, and that should have been enough time to come round. I was hoping he would come out this year better, but its not been the case. The man does not command his area good enough to be tottenhams no.1. Cerny in on Sunday. Give robinson a rest!
have you ever seen david james in goal and did you see the howler against mido at the weekend that says it all
Have you ever seen James play cos if you had you might have been able to tell the difference between David James and Tony Warner. Unsurprisingly Warner plays for Fulham who lost to Middlesborough (when the keeper spilled mido's shot). Pompey however won 3-1 against Bolton with James at no fault whatsoever for the goal. I would be the first to admit that Robinson is an excetional goalkeeper but his confidence is fading, playing in goal for england needs a certain amount of self belief to deal with the amount of pressure created by the fans and the whole country.

ok robinson had a very poor game last night, but that's really his first one in an england shirt. don't even mention the goal in croatia cos that was a pure freak of nature. david james has regularly made fck ups for england. it would be easy to reel off a list of examples, but everyone knows this, i know it would be patronising to even bother. he even fcked up last night coming to the edge of his box with no chance of getting near the striker. He got lucky and was reprieved when the shot was sliced wide rather than dinked over him into the empty unguarded net. As for Matt Green... the people who write this type of article should be ashamed - as should whoever checks them.

While Robbo isn't blameless look at the facts - first goal Shorey didn't clear as required and didn't even bother to try and close down Schneider and the entire back four were on or around the six yard box as was Robbo expecting a cross and not a shanked ball. Second goal we lost the ball cheaply in midfield, which we seemed to do all night, and NO-ONE closed down the German who had all the time in the world to pick his spot. Yes messrs Terry, Lampard, Beckham and Ferdinand did not close him down or bother to tackle. The whole England team is a mess and you cannot solely blame Robbo
by Jason on August 23, 2007
What a stupid article. The ball should have been cleared before the guy got his cross in and when he did, he mis-hit. End of!!
by push and run on August 23, 2007
sorry but as a spurs fan too i can see where this article is coming from. Robbo has been caught out in too many situations now, especially from long range shooting (too slow to react), crosses and mis-placed punches. It isn't just for england, its for spurs too. I feel for the guy because he was an unbelievable keeper for spurs leading up to the world cup, keeping many clean sheets, making last ditch saves, making no mistakes, and effectively winning us games. Playing for england in the world cup IMO has knocked his confidence (with the weight of the country's expectations on his shoulders its easy to see why) and he is no longer the same keeper that we had the season before last. Maybe dropping him from the england setup means he can start to rebuild his confidence again and be the superb goalkeeper that all spurs fans know he can be

great article....and u couldnt be more spot on. unfortunately alot of these 'fans' who back robbo...enjoy the action he brings. THeres no bigger drama queen in football than Paul Robinson. always flying around making saves look dramatic. he'd be more suited to playing the role of the next superman. anyone who knows anything about football, and true world class keepers (think Buffon, Czech, Casillias) knows Robbo simply isnt good enough ....for club or country

FIRST OF ALL HE SAVED A SHOT FROM WHICH IT WAS SCORED BUT YES IT A MISTAKE BECAUSE OF A COMPLETE MISKICK WHICH U CANNOT LEGERSLATE FOR ALL KEEPERS MAKE MISTAKES BECAUSE THE BALL IS SO LIGHT AND CHANGES DIRECTION VERY QUICKLY ALSO ALSO THE KEEPERS HAVE MADE HOWLERS LAST SEASON [IF U CARE TO LOOK AT THE GAMES] JAMES THIS HAS MADE COCK-UPS ALREADY ALSO REMEMBER THE ALMIGHTY CLANGERS AGAINST DENMARK DIPSTICK [SAID HE WASNT PREPARED]ADMITTINGLY ROBBO DIDNT HAVE A GOOD SEASON NOR DID A LOT OF PLAYERS AFTER WORLD CUP HOWEVER U DO WRITE CRAP WHEN U SAY ALL THE SPURS SUPPORTERS ARE MOANING THEY STILL SUPPORT HIM AND STILL CHANT HIS NAME SO PRAY TELL ME HOW MANY CLANGERS IN GAMES APART FROM BOLTON DID HE COST US POINTS AS I WENT TO ALL THE GAMES U AR NOT A SPURS SUPPORTER SO PLEASE DO NOT SAY U AR. WITH THAT GARBAGE U HAVE JUST WROTE

I am a Tottenham season ticket holder and I totally agree that Robinson is currently a liability to both Tottenham and England. This latest error is just further evidence of his consistant failure to deal with crosses or shots from distance. I seriously wonder if he has a problem with his eyesight as he is one of the best stoppers from close range shots in the Premiership. I am sick and tired of other Spurs supporters making excuses for him, at Chelsea away last season they said he was unsighted when he let in a forty yarder, Wigan away, he let in a shot from the left wing corner flag. Reading away, another shot went in from outside the area, again he was unsighted. Man U away he dollied a long range free kick into the air fell back in his goal and allowed Giggs to waltz in for a free header. I could go on, with many other examples. Also he has sudden rushes of blood like when he dashed out of his area against Arsenal at home in the Carling Cup semi final, their player danced around him and squared the b
By saying Robinson is crap at the moment doesnt mean James is any better! All spurs fans get pissed of with Robbo because - 1) He lumps the ball as far as he can 4 out of 5 times he gets it (For spurs) 2) Does not control his box enough on crosses. 3) His too slow to react to long shots 4) And most importantly of all, we all know he can be the best around (As he was in his first season!) - and that playing for England has fucked him up!
by Brapasaurus on August 23, 2007
Robinson is a good keeper. It makes sense for him to be no1 until the younger keepers get more experience in the premiership. James has been outstanding for Portsmouth but he aint playing for england because he is reaching the end of his career and McLaren wants to build a team over the long term. chopping and changing keepers will create even more instability at the back. similar situation at Spurs with Cerny, with many fans wanting to drop Robbo and give him a chance. however with so many injuries in defence this would not be a good idea to risk against ManU. I recon cerny does need a chance tho, just not this weekend. Robbo could help us out of our situation, he just needs his confidence back.
by SHELFSIDE YID on August 23, 2007
The influx of Foreign coaches and playershas meant that we have swayed to a mishmash of Anglo-continental play. Goalkeepers always commanded their areas and only punched when absolutely necessary, Robbo punches all the time as do most PL keepers, it is very difficult to be exact with a punch when flying through the air. A few bad punches looks dodgy and leads to a lack of confidence (Robbo), he is a great shotstopper but his command of crosses has always been questionable. We need to go back to catching in the crowded penalty area, it not only builds the keepers confidence but also the whole team. Look at the great English keepers, they very rarly punched. Come on Robbo sort it out!!
Just thinking about Big Pat flying through the air above the penalty spot catching a cross one handed as he did on so many occasions, sends shivers down me spine!!
by sarah on August 23, 2007
owen missed an open goal but he doesnt get stick for it. other strikers like defoe will feel they wouldnt of missed the goal. so come on just cos robbo is from tottenham dont mean you can all be a bunch of twats
Oi, wot you doing! Who said you could stop ironin! Get off the computer an get on with your real job!

The fact is Robinson is not on form. I agree, when he plays well, I personally think he is one of the best. But when was the last time we saw a confident Robbo? For goal keepers its all about confidence, and at the moment he has none!
by sperzz on August 23, 2007
I agree Robinson is currently a liability. His problem is that he doesn't come for crosses often enough, leaving his defenders to deal with these situations. If you look at some games closely enough, you'll notice that there were many occasions when he didn't come crosses which indirectly led to goals for the opposition. Defenders always look to their keeper for confidence, like plucking high balls out of the air. He's a good keeper, but short on confidence at the moment.
