Former Arsenal legend Ian Wright x3 is apparently none to pleased at the treatment that perennial sub Jermain Defoe has been getting at Spurs. The goal-machine remarked in his column for The Sun: "Despite what's happened at White Hart Lane, I still feel Martin Jol is the right man for the job and deserves a chance.Yet I was disgusted when I heard the manager has told Jermain he has to show his loyalty to Spurs by signing a new contract.

''For the last few years, Jol has stuck Jermain on the bench when he deserved a run in the team. I know Jermain was badly advised at the start of his career with Charlton and West Ham but since he's been at Spurs you've never heard him moaning and he's always got on with the job.”

Ian makes some good points and before Tottenham fans decide to attack their former nemesis and question why he is sticking his oar in, I think it's worth bearing in mind the amount of time England international Defoe has sat towards the back of the striker queue at White Hart Lane. I am sure that in the next few weeks he'll be given a starting place and will prove himself very capable. It’s a problem when you have four top-quality strikers to pick from; mind you, it’s a problem most teams, including Arsenal perhaps, would be happy to live with.

'Clearly Baptista has no problem scoring goals at Anfield, having netted four times there in January'

The Iceman appeared to not be cometh-ing (deliberate misuse of English for comic effect) to Britain; now it appears he may be back on course for move away from the Nou Camp. Eidur Gudjohnsen has been linked with a loan deal from Barcelona to Celtic (Daily Mail), as well as being the subject of a long-running on/off saga with West Ham. I am not sure if a short-term deal is what the former Chelsea man would be after at this stage in his career, but Celtic may offer him Champions League football, depending on their performance against Spartak. West Ham can offer him Premier League football and all the glitz and glamour that comes with it. If you were the front man, what would you do?

Aston Villa are set to clinch a deal with Fulham for central defender Zat Knight after refusing to pay £10m for West Brom's Curtis Davies (The Sun). Former England international Knight is a pretty solid performer and would be a very handy, and perhaps more importantly, a cheaper alternative to the want-away Baggies star. I would imagine Zat would cost less than half the fee Tony Mowbray wants for Curtis, but will Lawrie Sanchez be keen to let such a key component of his team leave? At this rate, Martin O’Neill may have to go cheaper still and look for a defender half the value of Knight, like one does when opening a set of Russian dolls (you wouldn’t want to live in my brain sometimes, it's very David Lynch in style).

Reports are emanating from Spain linking Real Madrid pair Roberto Soldado and Julio Baptista with Liverpool. They are two strikers with a lot to offer. Soldado was one of the hottest prospects in Spain 18 months ago but has failed to break into the picture under Bernd Schuster. Baptista, the former Arsenal battering ram affectionately known as ‘The Beast’, had a poor loan season at the Emirates, oddly enough only coming to life in cup competitions. Clearly he has no problem scoring goals at Anfield, having netted four times there in January. However, in all honesty, I fail to see the point in either signing as Liverpool’s main shortfall is in defence due to injury problems. Do they really need another two strikers? Anfield fans, let me know what you think.

Somewhat contradictory to the previous rumours is the report that Villa will splash out £20m to land Defoe and Curtis Davies (Daily Star). Which neatly brings together two stories previously referred to in one. Don’t say I don’t have editorial style! I very much doubt that £20m would get both players into the Villa Park picture - maybe nearer £30m would do the trick.

A pay rise has kept striker Dimitar Berbatov smiling and staying at Spurs for the moment with Manchester United lurking (various). Where will this end - what happens when the Bulgarian’s agent tries to orchestrate another move? You can not simply throw money at the problem. I have no doubt that Berbatov wants to stay but after reading comments made by his unscrupulous agent I equally doubt that this will be the end of this story.
