Are you sure you're not an Arsenal fan? What's your team then cause it's clearly none of the other top 3?
by brian newland on September 03, 2007
I would love to think that mr rivlin is correct and his article certainly makes valid comments. However,I really think that Arsenal more than any of the other top 4 can look vulnerable defensively and rarely give us supporters an armchair ride.Might have yesterday but for the sending off but generally we always manage to look a bit shaky at the back. For this reason I believe we will fail to win the league.

You're right with your opinion Mark. No-one can say at this stage how it's going to pan out, but for the BBC to keep going on about Liverpool, and they're favourites now apparently?, because they beat Derby, there's no logic involved. Arsenal beat Liverpool three times last year, including twice at Anfield, hitting them (a team which included Steven Gerrard no less) for 6 with a youth team. Yet suddenly over night Arsenal are also-rans, and Liverpool favourites for the title? Arsenal beat Man Utd home and away, drawing home and away with Chelsea. If you with a betting man, and studying the form, Arsenal would appear to be good value with the bookmakers.

Liverpool finished ahead of Arsenal in the league and have done the past two seasons. Granted they beat us in the cups but you seem to forget a 4-1 hammering at Anfield in the league. Nobody is saying Arsenal are also rans, people are getting far too excited with the Henry departure. You can never tell with Arsenal but the past few years suggest they are in transition and although 4th is not a bad place to finish, they haven't suggested they are close to bridging a 20 points gap this season. Arsenal created a lot of chances against City & Fulham without overwhelming them? Is that better than Liverpool creating chances and also overwhelming teams? I fail to see your point. Also 'Liverpool have indeed started well but I do not think they have developed enough of an understanding between the players to mount a sustained title challenge'???? I don't even know where to start here, please explain?
by Mark on September 03, 2007
What have Arsenal done to suggest they will suddenly find the away form neccessary to win the League? They struggled badly away from home last year and I can't see that changing. I'm a Liverpool fan by the way and I too find the sudden media band wagon behind my team hard to listen to. We have had a solid away start against a plucky Sunderland side and a very solid Villa unit. We should have had maximum points but for a poor decision. Certianly reason to be encouraged that we can mount a decent challenge, but I agree the media hype, is just that, hype. But with regard to your article, I'm afraid I fear Chelsea and United more than the Gunners. I hope I'm wrong because if we don't win it I'd prefer Arsenal to take the title. I just can't see your young team taking enough points on the road. You lack a physical presence to get you through the ugly games away to Blackburn, Portsmouth etc. And by the way, your two wins at Anfield were in the Cup and we had important Champions League games around the corner. Agree with some points but do not see how Liverpool can be accused on not developing an undertanding? They have impressed me in every game I've seen them play. Calling Arsenal's backline shaky is also wrong, they have conceded 3 goals in 4 games. 2 were cock-ups by Mad Jens and the other a complete fluke by Kanu.

You also failed to mention our 4-1 win over the Gunners later that season. Nobody on Merseyside is talking about winning titles, we leave that for the London press, we will carry on trying to improve we

As someone who is NOT a neutral, I hope you are right. Unfortunately football has a way of showing up deficiencies and Arsenal are very light defensively. Loaning Djourou to Birmingham could well bite AW in the butt if we get any more injuries, and PLEASE tell me this is the beginning of the end for Jens, a quality keeper who is to often preoccupied with other players to show his class.
by Tom on September 03, 2007
Shane, you say "Granted they beat us in the cups but you seem to forget a 4-1 hammering at Anfield in the league", yet arsenal also hammered liverpool 3-0 at home. Arsenal played Liverpool four times last season. Beating them a total of 3 out of these 4 games played. Liverpool are stronger than last year, but still not close enough to united and chelsea, and will finish 4th this season.

Winning 6-0 against Derby does not tell us as much as Manchester United winning 1-0 against Sunderland. What a ridiculous and unsubstantiated comment. It would take a mug punter to say anything other than Arsenal and Liverpool have improved and Chelsea and Man U have started badly. But if you have to draw conclusions, how can you draw the one you do. Arsenal have struggled to beat Fulham and City and drawn at Blackburn. They played well against Pomey, fair play. Liverpool have built on a fortunate but deserved win at Villa (who just beat Chelsea), outclassed Chelsea and drew because they turned on the Styles, and comfortabley beat two average teams, one of whom Man U struggled to beat at home. No lets be realistic, the two conclusions you can draw from procedings so far is that it will be a 4 horse race this year and that it will include the usual 4. Other than that, you're just talking daft. I support Liverpool and it will take a lot to persuade me u dont support Arsenal

Wat the hell is ur playin style man no one understands. There is no particular format.Chelsea atleast has some nice long passes, wat does Liverpool have 11 players srambling here and there without a particular shape.Arsenal may or maynot win the league but it will certainly finish above Liverpool.
by Paul Bennett on September 03, 2007
Last season Liverpool finished ahead of Arsenal on goal difference! good article but its too early to tell, but Arsenal aren't looking like they will have another season with the word "potential" written all over it, or get out muscled in away games up north. They will bridge the gap and have a shout.

I wanted to say this for a long time: as an Arsenal fan the only comments from other clubs I can stand are those from Liverpoolers. Not engaging in hatred and cursing but talking football is something Spurs fans will never learn. I said during pre-season that this team is up for the challenge. Will they win the title - nobody knows. Can they win it - definitely yes. Tom and Mark, I don't follow the press that closely but is it only the London press calling you a (or THE) title contender? I hope the Arsenal can make it but if there is a challenger it most definitely is Liverpool. Last seasons games mean nothing anymore and it's an all new ballgame now. I cannot see our defense 'shaky'. Even a completely crippled defense could not be cracked by Portsmouth (Kanu didn't crack it, right). I would see either Arsenal or Liverpool up at the top and neither club will win by more than 3 or 4 points difference. In the media things always look a bit different. Here in Asia there's still people on TV stunning you wi

Good to see a coherent argument from Cherry. "Wat the hell is ur playin style man no one understands. There is no particular format.Chelsea atleast has some nice long passes, wat does Liverpool have 11 players srambling here and there without a particular shape.Arsenal may or maynot win the league but it will certainly finish above Liverpool" Why will Arsenal certainly finish above Liverpool? I've seen nothing to suggest this or that Arsenal will suddenly overcome their difficulties away from home against grittier teams. I know a lot of the media are getting carried away with Liverpool at present but as a Liverpool fan, it's nice to see some progress has been made and we might just be in the mix at the end of the season. I can't understand though how this selection of Arsenal fans are suddenly so confident. You beat Pompy 3-1 at home. Great! You also made hardwork of Fulham and Man City and drew away at Blackburn. Nothing wrong with that but get a grip lads, you're still fourth favourites at best.

For people who cant understand this article i will make it simple what he is trying to say is that by looking at the preseason and up until now in the league arsenal has maintained a clean record of winning games if you just look at the opponents we played aginst in the preseason you can understand where he comes from. With that bieng said, compare the liverpools preseason and arsenals you can obviously see that we were on top of our game. On the other hand it is true that you did beat us in the league but when it comes down to it you have to look at the how many times we played against liverpool and won wheather it was in the league or not. Simply put, the same team that humilated chelsea in the carling cup, is the same team that beat liverpool; our youngster. However, i do agree that it is too early to predict.
by osas on September 03, 2007
I have absolutely no doubt that Arsenal can win the league. The question is when not if they would win it. I think it is a little bit to early to start making predictions, Arsenal and Liverpool have had relatively easy starts. We would have a clearer picture after 10-15 games after arsenal go to anfield and then return to old trafford a week later. I think Liverpool are also in a similar senario and it is too early to tell how well they would do this season. The new players look good but most times new players take a while to adjust. At the end of the day it is all down to consistency and it is impossible to judge that after 4 games in a 38 game season.

arsenal and liverpool finshed level on points last season.
As a real Liverpool fan (and I acknowledge that this is our best squad since we last won the title, and am I very happy with our start), I would like to say give it a rest, to all Liverpool and Arsenal fans who litter these early season Blogs with ridiculous boasts about how they will win the league etc. We haven't even got through the first month yet. Anyone who thinks that UTD and Chelsea won't be right in it at the end is deluded. This sort of ill-conceived journalism, and some of the brain dead responses just make fans of our teams look ridiculous. Chelsea and UTD fans would be laughing if they read some of this stuff. The auther of this article has written Chelsea off already. I can't understand this at all. If you have followed football all your life you know that every season teams are written off, go through bad spells etc. Lets not talk up Liverpool or Arsenal until April/May. It might come back to haunt us.
by Cliffard Claven on September 03, 2007
I think discarding Chelsea is a little bit silly. Sure Arsenal are the value bet, that is because the other 3 have shitty odds. The top 4 is a bit of a lottery, anyone can beat anyone, its a big giant guess who can win it. None can be discarded, its early September ffs, we have seen 18pt leads overturned in the last decade so any one of them are capable of blinding runs and they are all capable of a capitulation. The top 4 are in the top 8 seeds in Europe, and when that gets to the last 8 anyone can win. So basically, articles like this suck donkey balls!
by Farrukh on September 03, 2007
Look at the authors other article - none are related to Arsenal so calm down accusers. On another note I wish he wouldn't big us up as I enjoy others Seeing Arsenal as the underdogs! We would've been top had it not been for Mad Jens.

As a liverpool fan i respect Arsenal as a club and for the way they play football, what irritates me are muppets that spout a load of crap that doesnt make sense. No style? plenty of styles more like. Thats been Arsenals problem of the past and maybe why they havnt won as much as they might have deserved, no plan B. Benitez was familiar with the champions league before he came but has had to adapt his squad for the toughness of the prem as he has learnt, hopefully now he has nearly acheived what he set out to do and has cover, with a range of skills, in each position thus enabling him to adapt his squad/style for each individual game. Wether they gel completely this season is out for the jury, but they look alright for me at the moment. Man ure and chavski probably still have the edge an id rather arsenal won over either of them, but finishing above liverpool... behave yourself!
by Simon on September 03, 2007
There is no doubt that Arsenal outplayed Pompey but there is also no doubt that there goals were all from Pompey defence errors and a peno. I rate Arsenal but your wrong to say that it doesn't matter who plays, it is the team style that matters. You take away a couple of them top players or they are off form then the cog in the wheel is broke. They will definately struggle come winter. I think the way Liverpool are playing at the moment is awesome. They also play as a team.
