After another disappointing display and loss, I think Tottenham should adopt the Red Bull slogan. “We need wingers” must have been based on Tottenham’s obvious problem.

If I were a Spurs fan, I would wonder where my team is heading.

They have a good back line, four good forwards and at the moment only central midfielders. Aaron Lennon’s injury has proved how much the Spurs depend on speed and quality down the right. Michael Carrick's deparure has clearly affected the team, but I feel that Lennon is the key to the Spurs' failure to create chances and score. Didier Zokara does look good, but without width, his break-up play and good passing range will count for nothing.

Against Liverpool, Jermaine Jenas was the most effective player. In the first half he proved a number of issues for the Liverpool defence line. There was no threat
from the left ,and nothing could be pushed through centre midfield, with Xabi Alonso and Muhammed Sissoko pressing and harrying every touch.

Tottenham could have made something through the counter-attack. A good break early second half saw Jermaine Defoe, Edgar Davids and Jermaine Jenas all link up well, but Jermaine Jenas missed an absolute sitter.

This was the turning point, as Liverpool then made their break 36 seconds later and scored through Mark Gonzalez: a good ball from the right from Steven Gerrard, from which Craig Bellamy struck the post and Mark Gonzalez slotted home. The second goal was well worked: the Spurs froze at the back as Luis Garcia threaded a neat pass to Dirk Kuyt, who powered home, leaving England’s number one goalkeeper Paul Robinson rooted to the spot.

Spurs simply fell to pieces with their heads down. John Arne Riise scored a trademark goal with an inch perfect shot from at least 35 yards, which even two keepers in goal would have struggled to save.

Spurs need creative wingers. They need to go back to the strengths of last season, strong midfield, good winger play. I would suggest playing Mido and Defoe. Keane is too inconsistent for a team struggling to find the net.

On the other hand Liverpool looked better. But before the goal the Reds didn’t look like they would create much. I believe the constant movement from Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt leaves Liverpool restricted for anyone to hold the ball up and bring in power players like Gerrard, who cannot always grab the game by the scruff of the neck and control it.

Peter Crouch must consider what he has done wrong to be left on the bench. Liverpool are too slow in defence to mount a serious title challenge, as teams with dynamic pace and good counter-attacking play will score freely unless this is addressed.

Spurs will bring it round, but if they do not address their left side problem, and if Aaron Lennon is injured again, many teams will know they are soft playing wide. Liverpool will climb, but I can see many teams playing five across midfield frustrating Liverpool, and they will be exposed against quick explosive strikers. Liverpool could finish top three - but October will be a tricky month for them!
