You have to go back through the record books to 1997 to find the last time Spurs beat their great north London rivals, Arsenal. That was when Tim Sherwood and Stefan Iversen scofred the goals in a 2-0 win.
Spurs fans can be forgiven for expecting more from their team, this season, but the result at White Hart Lane was again disappointing, with Tottenham conceding three goals in a spell of 20 minutes or so at the end of the game.

The last time we beat Arsenal was in 1999. Also the only reason Spurs haven't been succesful over recent years was because we are always too quick to push the panic button. I truthfully believe the only way to turn our season around will be to give him time. He turned it around last year and we came desperately close to winning trophies but for poor defending.I'm sure we'll do it again.

I believe we beat the gooners 2-1 in 2001 actually and Rebrov got the winner

You should be happy you could even get as talented a manager as Jol. There is no way Lippi will come to WHL, noone will. The club is being run by idiots....think Real Madrid without the lure of being a big club

Point the author is trying to make is not if jol can turn it around, but he he take us to a new level. The whole defensive is poor no one is dying to block shots, closing attackers space, defending too deep. We still will do well in the league, but not better than last season because there is no belief. If wenger of ferguson had our squad we will be top four!

frankly this site is a joke, i haven't ever seen an article with a shred of truth or that ever happens, its pathetic really, jol must stay in, last time we gt a 'big name manager' he was shit and left, i'm sure lippi will do much better....or not, fergie was at united for ages b4 he did anything, its all about continuity as jol said earlier this week, as long as we get a UEFA cup spot agen and gd cup runs and start getting points on the board i'll be happy, he has had alot of major injuries and hard teams to play against in our opening 6 matches, give jol a break, jeeeeeez! SPURS 4EVA!

lippis a world cup winner a top coach, if he takes another job that isnt for a team he has a real love for itll be a champions league club minimum, the guy can pick and choose his jobs. i like jol hes a likeable manager, but how comes EVERYONE can see the defense and creative players in the midfield was thin, hes wasted 16 mil that could have brought a good cb and a good creative midfielder on bent who you didnt need, all hs done now is alienate defoe who will surely leave if any offers come in in jan or at the least the summer, how the club can talk about loyalty and how he needs to sign his new contract when they spent 16 mil on another striker instead of showing some faith in him is ludicrous! as for damien commoli the back stabbing nonce i think arsenal are wel rid of that sort of character! anyone who thinks hes a big shot cos he negotiated paying 8 mil for zokora needs a brain transplant!
by despur on September 15, 2007
we are not far removed from a time when a 10th place finish and a decent performance in one or two games against a top team was a good season ok bmj does seem to be tactically behind the top coaches but as for for players not being motivated come on jol has assemled the best young squad we have ever had and i think it is time to sit back and evaluate the expectations a lot of you guys have for the team the future is bright so support the manager and the players and things will come good!

For the first time in years I was nervous about finishing behind Tottenham. Martin is probably the best that WHL has seen for years. However you could see the haunted look on his face today. The game is all about confidence. When our unbeaten run was broken, it took us two years to regain the same sort of form and confidence. I can only imagine blogs like these and chairmen like Levy do not help.
by kitan on September 15, 2007
Yes Yol has done a lot for spurs but maybe he can't just find his way beyond the top four, think it's time to find someone who can fight the top four battle tactically. definitely Yol lacks that, Chelsea at home last year , Arsenal Last year , Man unt Last year and this year, Fulham Two weeks ago, why do we keep loosing grip after leading for so long.?
by Unattractive Man on September 15, 2007
You poor sad spuds. What makes you think that Lippi would even consider such a treacherous club with its fickle fans? Most spuds are loud mouths who know nothing about football and believe whatever is printed in the sun, Spurs will never succeed - regardless of what poor manager you choose.

Finally some spurs fan saw sence, and starting crying, because they have now realised that arsenal are much better. Even with a dodgy keeper and a head start we showed you at your own turf. 9 points ahead of you, and a game in hand. beautiful football, passing, touch, movment ohhhh how i love being a gooner red & white. adebayoor adebayooooor adebayoooooor fabregas fabregas fabregas king kolo king kolo

Obviously I'm delighted with today's result, but putting that to one side, I think you lot and Levy should get behind Jol and let him carry on what he's been undoubtedly doing since he arrived. I seriously am not one of those gooners who thinks 'yeah keep Jol cause he's shit' because I rate him highly, he talks sense, he has made great buys, and Spurs have been consistently improving. I get a lot of stick for this, but I would love to see Spurs become a real threat to us again (no offence intended) like you were pre-Wenger, Klinsmann part I era for example, because it makes the derby that much more meaningful. If Jol is given full control over signings and team management then he can do well. If not then you'll never get where you want to be.
[quote]I was down the Lane today, picking up 2 extra tickets for the game at the weekend.I spent a lot of time here for business as well as matchdays.I just sat for a moment in my seats area gazing out onto the turf, lost for a moment in the eerie quietness and felt how far removed this was from the madness that will be 1:30 on Saturday afternoon.I have sat it this place boy and man for 25 years, seen it all in that time, good memories as well as the bad. Of course all this comes with being a life long lover of your club, you have to have broad shoulders. As I got up to leave a friend who works at the club came over and sat with me. I was lost in thoughts of Great days here."I can't wait for saturday" I said to him, he smiles and nodded. and as I walked away from my seats and from this wonderful stadium I thought "We can do this, we're taken all the stick over the years, but we can really do this". I got into my car and as I drove out of the main entrance I smiled WITH REAL BELIEF and thought" I just can't wa

u spuds make me laugh, what makes you think a top quality manager wants to come to and manage spuds you guys live in planet cukoo land, 16mil for bent and cant even hit the target. spuds think they are a big club the sooner you realise that you are not the less expectation you might have. spuds have spent nearly 90mil in the last 3 years and your ambition is to get 4th place off arsenal instead of trying to compete for the title. cmon the gooners, PLEASE SPUDS FANS WAS FABREGAS CLASS TODAY OR WHAT?
by Ivor Biggen on September 15, 2007
Since last season..Jol is too negative to break into the top four.Top four clubs have top four class managers..Lippi said he would take Spurs job and nothing wrong with trying...Lippi or Capello either will do.
Jol can moan about finishing as much as he likes but it wont wash..Arsenal to be fair missed some very good chances via Diaby and Adebayor twice..Jol instead should talk about conceding 6 goals in the last 2 games...his coaching is not good enough specialy 3 clean sheets in 34 games is a joke.
by Samnnachi on September 15, 2007
40 million pounds and bottom 4 is the best spurs can achieve oooh. With a player like bent (Championship Player) what a waste(of 16 million), defoe is by far better. please stop this dream of top 4 or being better than arsenal and focus on the general league, its a 20 team league and not arsenal / spurs league. And for once let jol buy the players he wants and not any player linked with arsenal (Comolli). Como is one man that is very happy any time spurs loses. we want some like arsene who hates losing.
by DaveCowan on September 15, 2007
Something has got to give. There has got to be a change - you can see it in everybody's body lanaguage - it needs to change but not BMJ. He is the best thing that has happened to Spurs since whatever Gazza, Hoddle, Venables, Greaves whatever etc. But he nees some help. Chris Hughton was a solid player but is an average coach - he was a defender but our defence at the moment is shite. Send Chris to help Clive out with the stiffs or serve half time sherberts to the comfy chairs and bring in some help for BMJ to shake the lazy overpaid tossers on the pitch up a bit.
by marcello lippi on September 15, 2007
good article but i don't think he will be coming the only way i can see is that we rough out this season and juande ramos at the end of his contract (before anyone says he wont go yes he will go because he won't renew his contract and he luvs the prem the only job will stop him is the chelsea job)
by King Glenn on September 15, 2007
Fabregas was indeed class today, but the biggest crime was giving the guy the free run of the pitch. Why the fuck didn't we at least try to man mark the guy instead of sitting at least 10 yards off him throughout? It happened twice last year as well. It's basic stuff, so why do we continue to make the same basic errors. Sit off Arsenal and they will murder you ... don't know whether it is a shite game plan or a shite midfield, but something is sadly missing. I would clear the lot out for the upcoming cup games and give KPB, Taraabt, Defoe and Bent a chance to get something going. Berbatov & Keane were a half-hearted waste of space today. We need to shake these cosy "superstars" up big time.
by Kenny Johnson on September 15, 2007
Time and Time again we are witnessing bad tactics, bad defending and the inability to man mark, close teams out and hold games.Changes are needed now, that is now becoming painful prudent and equally costly. we need to look at our coaching methods. I mean Chris Houghton (Ex - Defender, that's a laugh) was proberbly good coaching 10-15 years ago when football in the top english league was predomantly played by british players, now we have world players playing different systems with non-british coaches, its a nrw world game, we need new visions to step up to the next level.Spurs season will now depend on drastic changes. Is Martin Jol really the man to take us forward?, I find it increasingly difficult to remain positive on that question, but common sense leaves me feeling that bringing in a new head at this stage of the season could prove disrupting, and who's to say that the new appointment would not want to make wholesale changes. Today game reflects some of the qualities that are good about Spurs and all t
by D Brinkley on September 15, 2007
Up until today I was in Jol's corner; right up until he brought Lennon on for Bale to play on the left. Surely having a right footer on the left and vice versa with Malbranque makes little sense to even the most blasé manager - let alone with someone fighting for their managerial life? In my eyes he should go. Wrong or right, the board have no faith in him, he has been proved tactically inept on more than one big game and the defence is a shambles. Big Martin, you're a nice guy, but alas it is time to step aside.
by EJ on September 15, 2007
Screw those bastards who kept supporting Jol, can't they see that he just ain't good? Forget Lippi, bring in Klismann!!!!
by Arsen Wengers Boyfriend (Spurs Fan) on September 15, 2007
I'm sorry but the players shouldn't need Jol to get the fired to play the Gooners. If they don't play with any passion for the badge then they should fucking do it for the 50K a week they take from us fans. Lazy gits.
And all that is so so bad.Arsenal were alowed to come at us because we do the same thing each and every game - We back off and allow teams room to build up,come at us and play freely. I like BMJ,and do feel that he has brought an element of belief to the club in recent seasons, and do hope for his sake that things do take a dramatic turn for the better. I just can't see the board looking at things that way though.
by name on September 15, 2007
I 100% agree with JOL OUT, but not sure Lippi is the right guy. I mean, Italian teams (and the national side) like scoring then shutting up shop. That's what Jol tries to do but it doesn't work for obvious reasons.
by James on September 15, 2007
Having been their today and watched spurs as a die hard tottenham fan, I witnessed a team that from start to finish put every ounce of effort into a fantastic Lonnon derby. After another defeat to our london rivals it would be very easy to moan and groan. The fact is as much as we all don't want to admit it, they were a class act.... We tried hard but lacked that bit of quality (hate to say it lacked a Fabregas) someone who can really pick a pass, who can battle, carry the ball with pace and most of all score from outside the box.. He was the difference and if were to inproove we buy a left sided atacking player. Bale for me is fantastic but is a better left back. Tottenham sign Mortan Gamst.... Tough next 6 fixtures they should decide MJ future not today.........
by joshmickael on September 15, 2007
a top for finish would put us in the champions league but then we ould not win it and jol would be sacked as it would be easy to find a better Ranked manager, so whatever he does who will be happy unless we win the champions league, big club is history we have been reborn and lost capacity our ground is no good we need a super stadium. only way to get thaat is play regular european footy , and it will take 5 years or more to get on par with Arsenal , we wont get relegated we just need to tick over and build from the back 5 years wills see players maturing money coming in and spurs really going places . get lippi or who you like but when they go as they will nothing would be different , jol is learning and so are the young Hotspurs as they are hot we just need to give it time , why put more good money on a manager like lippi when jol will get there in his own way, let the team gel dawson kaboul king bale chimbo they will stop the rot and get better Huds JJ Lennon zokora they will be the engine ! and 4 great

I'm a die-hard gooner. I went into today's game thinking this is the 1st tough game of the season. A few years back I was looking forward to meeting you Spuds. Jol has transformed the team. Whoever you bring in.....do not expect to crack the top 4. Or at the very least do not expect to top Arsenal. Wenger is a class apart. Unfotunate for Jol.
by trueyid on September 16, 2007
Jol is tactically inept, the only reason weve achieved 2 5th finishes is because of the new scouting setup and new chairman's money pumped in. to be honest finishing 5th is not an achievement. Moreso everyone continues to talk about are young, upcoming squad; 1st if these player are good enough ala tarabt then start them rather than a tried and failed malbranque/ y.p.lee/jenas. 2nd are youngsters are nothing compared to arsenals. We are living in a dream world, jol is superficial and has asembled individuals not a team we need a manager who can create this teamwork we desperately lack. the sooner jol is gone the better. COYS

I've heard both Jol and Camolli given responsibility for buying players like Bent. Can someone clarify for me?
by SLKhor on September 16, 2007
MJ's tactics are awful. You just cannot let arsenal play their game, you shouldn't give them space to create the killing touches. Spurs should get physical, chase for the ball, and take the game to them in order to contain them and get better of the gooner.Spurs performance seemed like the players simply don't have the stimina and determination to do the job against a very energetic side.It is due to MJ's training method and tactics not the confidence issue as mentioned by MJ. Therefore, I believe the time is right to give MJ the boot and replace him with Lippi or Cappello.
by klaus on September 16, 2007
lippi is the man/....he managad to turn a group of average players into world champions....he can do the same at spurs....
by Gary on September 16, 2007
I have a lot of time for Jol but he has failed to deal with basic problems. Darren Bent will score goals when his confidence returns BUT we didnt need him - our main 3 strikers got 20 goals each last season - we needed a young hungry 4th choice, not a £16M man who we feel obliged to play (and therefore pee off Defoe). We havent replaced Edgar Davids - i.e a midfield player who can actually tackle and protect the back four. Huddlestone is a great passer but isnt mobile enough or quick enough and never will be. Where was he when Fabregas ran 50 yards to get on the end of the Arse move that led to the 2nd goal? Still crossing the halfway line if you look. Lee isnt Prem quality at full back and Dawson and Kaboul dont seem to communicate. When will fans be told the truth about Ledley - he aint coming back and we need to rethink our defence without him. Bale should be at full back (great crosser and dead-ball but no right foot - good defenders bring him inside and he's lost); we need a genuine left side midfield
by superbill on September 16, 2007
I dont dislike BMJL in case U guys think I am anit Jol. He is a decent manager but not good enough for top 4 quality. We have seen him made tactical mistakes many times and we dont need another 32 games to realise he is not the right man. If we want to bring in a new manager at this stage, it must be either Lippi or Capello or else it is better to stick with it and endure a miserable season. Just bring in either of them at all cost , Levy.........the fans are frickler minded, once they taste success, they will forget about backing BMJ
by Gunn3r on September 16, 2007
Seriously Spurs. Its your board, your sporting director and the hierachy at your club that is the problem, not Martin Jol! You have a great manager whose efforts had given you the hope to argue that you could bring Champions League football to White Hart Lane and/or beat Arsenal. I don't wish to start a war of words on this second point but could you say that with previous managers? You have young talent and a solid manager and if only you admin had some faith like you fans (most of you) then you would be on your way. Have faith and hang on to Berba, Bale, Lennon etc etc

It is patently obvious that something has to change at WHL before the season is dead and gone, which this year given the improvement in competition in the PL will be sooner rather than later.Worry is we will just pluck a big name out of the skylike we did with Santini and to a lesser extent Gross. I say be careful as this appointment must be the right one.

I love all the Arsenal fans talk about continuity being the reason for success and how Jol should be given more time. I can just see how contented they would have been if Wenger had the same track record. It would have been just like Bruce Rioch...out the door after 18 months max. Time for Jol to go. The manager is key to success, not the players, not the Board. Wenger has taken a bunch of very ordinary players, mixed with one or two really good players and taught them how to play football. Jol has not.

In the game yesterday we can consider ourselves quite unlucky If berba makes it 2.0 when he rounded Almunia This article wouldnt have been written or if Bent takes his chance and its 2.2 I think we can take some credit that we caused Arsenal quite a few problems and had more chances then most clubs get. esspecially i feel Arsenal haven't had this much confidence running through them since they won the leauge! and we aint exactly firing on all cilinders at the moment!! that combined with the fact that Wenger signing his new deal (timed very well, cleverly!) had the whole side on a high.Ideally I wouldnt have hoped to play the scum at this stage but hell the seasons started weather we're ready or not! Anyway im not making excuses Arsenal where class in that game! I feel the people who wrote them off in the summer (Mainly the red top papers) where wrong! I for one didnt they play some really good football and Wenger is a top top coach! having said that I dont feel they will make any improvment this year Arsena

Do you really believe they would go to a club that this early in the season sacked the manager, with no way of bringing in their own players? Your problem is your midfield, Jenas is a joke, Malbranque is lazy, Bale is a defender. Huddlestone has the quality, but he is too young to carry the whole midfield.
How many of that Arsenal team yesterday are ordinary? Almunia admittedly is not top quality, but good enough, Gilberto was in centre defence (and how spuds would have cried if they had a midfielder in defence), superb full backs, Van Persie was quiet but Adebayor MORE than made up for him. Only other player who could be classed as ordinary would be Flamini, but you would have loved him in your midfield yesterday!

So if we are going back to 1999 when we last back the Gooners why make Martin Jol the scapegoat. In 2005 both fixtures were draws. Tottenham have not been beating the top four clubs for many seasons now. Who started all this crap about Tottenham must have Champions League football this season. Do you really think anyone of those top four clubs are going to give up their spot so easily and what about the likes of Man City Aston Villa etc who have all been spending money dont you think they want they spot. Daniel Levy and the board should have kept their mouths shout and we could just keep making steady progress. Instead they have turned the spot light onto Tottenham and just heightened the pressure. Putting things back into perspective we missed a massive chance against West Ham fir Champions League spot. Some peoples brains seem to have gone up their XXXX wiht overexpectations. We only played 40 games that season Scum played over 60. Get real a pieces of silverware will be a great acheivement this se

(a) the season is definitely lost, (b) if he is not responsible for buying embryonic defenders and midfielders and an unnecessary 4th first team striker, the basic problems of the club won't change, (c) the management will have created another Real-Madrid-on-the-Thames circus in North London. Sometimes, something has to change, and especially if Jol isn't the decision-maker on the acquisitions, then it may be easier to fire him than half the team and upper management -- but if other things don't change, then even the successor could do a Capello and still lose.

Hes big, hes affable, hes has lifted Spurs up out of some dark days. But the signs are back and confidence is draining fast. Yes Spurs need consistancy and I agree changing manager every time we loose a game is madness. But has Jol got what it takes? I dont think he has, even with more time, got the "special quality's" needed. I do think however a "proven" manager at the highest level "IS" what we need next. We have improved the team and now it is time to improve the Manager and the Coach. Lippi is a winner, the team will get confidence from him which is what ultimately its all about. I love the big man but we need to take the next step!!

You should really stop writing rubbish stories and let Martin and the boys play, you all so called spurs fans together with the vultures in the media are putting too much pressure on them. As to whether or not we beat or lose to Arsenal?, this obession with the Arsenal is at best a riduculous quest.Supporting Spurs is the ONLY thing that matters at the end of the day. They are nothing to do with us nor we them. Jol has a massive problem on his hands and I feel that he needs help from an experienced number two, because there are obvious problems and Hughton is little or no help whatsoever! We are at best frail in the middle and have been for two seasons. Zokora and Jenas cannot play together, and Huddlestone needs protection from a more combative team mate. Prince must be given at least a start ahead of either Malbranque or Jenas, as it clearly isnt working, and the forwards are isolated.Lee isnt upto it, and the old left sided problem once more raises its ugly head
