It's hard to keep track of the goings-on in the transfer market in today's game. In a debut game for a new club all eyes are on the new player, with every move they make scrutinised, glamorised or criticised.
Now we ask you to recall the most mesmerising debut performance that you've had the fortune, or misfortune, to witness. We want to know about the player AND the performance.
Could it be Wayne Rooney's Manchester United debut against Fenerbahce when he scored a hat-trick resulting in a 3-0 United win? Could it be Fabrizio Ravanelli on his Middlesbrough debut in 1998, when he scored three goals to each time pull them level against a resilient Liverpool.
What about George Best's debut for Manchester United against West Brom in 1963 at the age of 17, when the football world realised that a star had been born?
Or, for a completely different reason, it could be Jonathan Woodgate's Real Madrid debut when he faced Athletic Bilbao. Not content with scoring an own goal, he proceeded to get himself sent off.
Maybe it was Curtis Davies after his loan deal to Aston Villa facing a Leicester team not only on his debut but also his first competitive game in six months after breaking his foot and admitting afterwards: "It was my debut and I was awful. I didn't contribute anything to the team. I've been bigging myself up saying I was ready and obviously, by last night's performance, I'm not good enough to get in the team yet."Either way, debuts are always something that will stick in the memory. Which one stands out in yours?

I remember Carrick coming on as sub against Charlton at home and looking quality. Also Defoe got a couple on his debut and looked great, I think against Portsmouth. I remember watching Rooney's debut for Utd on tv and thinking I was witnessing something special.

Darren bents debut for spurs
by Tauren on October 24, 2007
Rooney's hattrick came in a 6-summit game, not 3-0.

For Leeds, got 3 or 4 against liverpool. I thought he'd be shit and told my aussie mate that he only scored cos scottish football is wank. Viduka made me look like a nob!

Klinsmann at Sheffield Wednesday. We won 4-3. He scored that amazing header then everyone dived. Doesn't get any better than that....

Great debut for Leeds, and was tipped for great things... but he seemed to go up in smoke...
by yamonn on October 24, 2007
does anyone remember Colin Lee and his six goals in a 9-0 thrashing of Bristol Rovers way back when?
by Bella Polenta on October 24, 2007
Not strictly his debut as we'll brush aside his own goal in that Carling Cup tie, but Reyes's equaliser and winner against chelsea in an FA Cup game at Higbury in 2004. If not this, then I'm with that bloke who talked about Vieira's against Sheff. Wed.

West Ham Away, just gone 3-2 down, Jol makes the best tactical switch of his career by bringing on a certain Adel Taarabt, he made the run that resulted in the freekick that Berbatov measured into the corner for 3-3. If i'm fair, Taarabt himself didnt do much else of note in that match, but his injection of energy and creativity shone through in the entire team and resulted in a 4-3 win for us.

To Tauren: yeah your right, it was 6-2, just got my facts a bit wrong on that one there! To Yamonn: yeah i know that one... it was 9-0 and he scored 4 goals, that was back in 1977 against bristol

Fowler had a tremendous 1st game..scored 1s against Fulham in the league cup. In the replay he scored all 5 goals against them!
Klinsmann at Sheffield Wednesday. We won 4-3. He scored that amazing header then everyone dived. Doesn't get any better than that....
Absolutely - I was there at the game as an 11-year-old (in the Sheff Wed seats) and he was fantastic. Typical Spurs of course, we were 4-1 up and cruising and ended up winning 4-3! Then Jurgen went down to the Lane and banged in a bicycle kick against Everton. Fantastic! We were there for that one too, although the day was slighlty spoiled when we got back to find the car had been broken into!

Trevor was signed after the start of the 1981-2 season when we were in the doldrems and he completely changed the atmosphere of the City fans (not unlike Sven's miracle as compared to last season). His first game for City was away against Stoke City (5th September). I think we (yes, I was there) doubled Stoke's normal home crowd, Trevor scored 2 and generally impressed.

johnathan woodgate for real madrid. haha funny!

Anyone here old enough to remember his debut against Bristol Rovers in 1977/78 in Division 2? He scored FOUR. And he wasn't the only Spurs player to score a hat-trick.
by morti on October 24, 2007
4 goals on your debut can't be bad. (the 9-0 drubbing of Bristol Rovers). However, he did the best part of nothing after that.

Played his first game against manchester United, Scored to put tottenham 3-0 up at half time, then in the second half united scored 5 goals to win the match
by adam stanton on October 25, 2007
Withitn 4 mins 1st division Boro were 2-0 up against Liverpool, and held on to make the Coca-Cola cup final.
by jt on October 25, 2007
the two that jump out at me are [a]tony cottee v newcastle u...a hat trick in a 4-1 win and newcastle couldve been punished a lot more that day & [b] glen keeley getting sent off in less than half an hour after turning like a juggernaut and hauling dalglish back on the half way line....never saw him again and we got hammered at home in the derby

Egotistical, I know, but I'd say me. I came late to soccer, and my initial exposure was to Serie A and Juve. But a few years back, I watched my first Arsenal match at a mate's place. It was such a sexy match that I dropped my pants and started wanking away! Needless to say, no one present has ever forgotten my "debut".
