Lucas Leiva, fondly referred to back home as 'The Brazilian Gerrard', received his first taste of the atmosphere and passion of a Merseyside derby on Saturday. Replacing Stevie Gerrard as a substitute midway through the second half, Lucas showed his remarkable ability, producing some marvellous footwork and piecing together several intelligent passes of great accuracy. In injury time, he blasted an on-target shot goalwards during a period of great Liverpool pressure, but was robbed of the match-winning goal by the blatant cheating of Everton's former Manchester United defender Phil Neville. Seeing that Leiva's shot was goalbound, Neville's hand denied him the glory with what could arguably be described as reflex 'save of the season' before taking the inevitable red-card walk of shame. ''Neville's hand denied Leiva the glory with what could arguably be described as reflex 'save of the season'''Fortunately, Dirk Kuyt stepped up to slot the penalty home and claim the full three points - which team-player Leiva, good sport that he is, would be the first to agree was the most important thing on the day. Manager Rafa Benitez said after the match: "We weren't keeping the ball very well and were in too much of a hurry sometimes with our final pass. I put Lucas on because he is a very good player who can pass the ball well for us. In the end, he helped us win the game by having the shot that led to our winning penalty." Liverpool fans will be buoyed by Leiva's display. His performance gives Rafa a happy selection headache as the talented Brazilian international stakes his claim for more regular first-team selection in centre field.

Neville is a legend for doing that. Not many players would get sent off for giving their side a chance. After all the crap going on during that game against Everton, it would have been very fair, even just if Howard saved it. Also, i believe there is no article describing how Gerrard cheated the ref for the sending off of Hibbert? Yes it was a penalty, but why did he go down so easily, and there was no need to make a massive scene to the ref with his hands raised like a schoolboy. Completely changed my perception of Gerrard after the game as i thought he was a model professional. Turns out hes just a typical gobshite.
by lloyd on October 23, 2007
not really because neville is also now out of the team for the next match.liverpool would have had the advantage and may have scored any way. liverpool scored anyway so there was no real nead to get the red card, miss the next game and give away a goal, what an idiot..
by wells on October 23, 2007
neville's save should result in a penalty goal. the ref should say, illegal use of hands to stop a goal, therefore a goal should be given
everton have proved how dirty they are by getting two red cards, they obviously knew they wern't going to win so they had to play dirty (nothing unusual). lucas levia should have taken the pen as he created it. benitez should be saked and bring in mouriniho. only joking benitez is doing a great job keep it up. *(*)*)*()*(
How did Gerrard cheat? it was a penalty and under the letter of the law, he has to go as he was the last man. I fail to see how it could be any thing else? What Gerrard ddid was appeal, like a cricketer would for a decision. Nothing more. Bitter, that is all.
by Dino on October 23, 2007
Had Hibbert not been sent off it would have been a right balls up by the ref, Gerrard only reminded him that he had to go - he was the last man. Gerrard cheated the ref? What rubbish! Job done.
gaz you are a complete idiot. you would never complain if neville had won everton a penalty. so dont complain just because YOU are a sore loser get over it everton are crap
by KT on October 23, 2007
Only a bluesc@@m will hail Neville as a lengend for that kind of cheat. Shame like like manager moyes. Gerrard falling easy? Is this the first time you watch football? Anyone will definitely fall in that situation and hibbert being the last man will definitely get red. Learn your football well.
by Paddock Blue on October 23, 2007
What a bunch of bellends, Firstly Gerrard was going wide and would have to have checked inside to shoot so not really a goal scoring chance, hence the ref correctly beginning to show a yellow before pal 'Stevie G Lar' unprofessionaly gets a fellow player and friend from huyton too boot sent off, what gobshyte. Carragher talking clattenburg out carding Reina for kicking the ball away. Lescott being wrestled to the ground. Not bitter just robbed. You lot are gash by the way, one of the worst liverpool sides ive seen at goodison, Title contenders, what a joke - unless you have clattenburg every game i suppose.
by bryan on October 23, 2007
Gerrard is a renowed cheater, remember last season against Sheffield Utd when he got the penalty for god knows what, he goes down too easily for a player of his stature, pity he didn't go down in his Mrs box?
by The Red Horseman on October 23, 2007
If everton were the "best" team why did they not score? Lets face it we scored all three. everton are a team that promise so much yet deliver so little.

..very good prospect but needs to lose that hideous barnet, the birds nest look is NOT good.
by Red Jay on October 23, 2007
So much bitter bluenose rubbish. "whinge whinge, he's a cheater! robbed blah blah blah"....i remember 2 of your 3 from the derby last season following the most obsurd fouls that any schoolboy ref wouldve spotted, but did we cry and moan.....i think not. We took the result as a shock (which any loss to your shower is, lets face it) then looked to gain revenge in the next game. Everyone gets their bit of luck so it was about time we had some having sh*t on Chelski at Anfield and been robbed. As for Gerrard going wide and needing to check back??? have you ever kicked a ball in your life...he was clear on goal!!Get over yourselves and back in the shaddow!
by rob on October 23, 2007
typical typical crap coming from the redside. A true answer never comes out from you lot. everyone knows gerrard dives but ohhhh no, doesnt do one thing wrong according to the kop. There is no way Hibbert's challenge would, nor should have been red carded was it not for the cheating Gerrard - he was going wide, wouldn't have neccessarily scored, it wasn't a clear hack down from Hibbert, more a tangle of legs, and Gerrard's cheating nature decided to complain to the weakest referee ive EVER seen. so no it was not a red card - but i guess we have your red tinted opinions on it and say that your right.
by Shane Robinson on October 23, 2007
Neville is a legend for getting sent off and letting his team down? Typical blue sh*te talk, your aims are so low every year the derby is your biggest day out. No dvd's this year then? Such a pack of whingers, didn't heatr us moan about Alonso and Finnan both being fouled prior to two of Everton's goals last year or blaming the ref. Grow up you little club
by Clark on October 23, 2007
How many Bitter Blues does it take to change a lightbulb? None. They just sit in the dar and blame Liverpool. YNWA 5&18
by jose walker on October 23, 2007
i am confused everyone is saying that nice fella phil neville dived to give a penalty to liverpool to stop liverpool scoring yet i have it on good authority that mr gollum and bill lovey had orderd his players to collect as many tesco bags released by the travelling kop when we chanted THE CITYS ALL OURS can you please check and comment
by dave westy on October 23, 2007
In my opinion Lucas Leiva will go on to become one of the most influential midfielders of the inevitable 'post-Gerrard' era. Find out more about him on fansite: www.lucasleiva.co.uk

What is the rule about pulling on a players shirt and triping them while in the box. Whomever's box you prefer to talk about? Ref got it right and Gerrard as the captain has the right and the obligation to talk to the ref!
by Fats Fact on October 23, 2007
Couldn't agree with the article and the comments made from the Red side anymore. Though lets face it in the bitter side of the city its always going to be Liverpools fault no matter what!
..very good prospect but needs to lose that hideous barnet, the birds nest look is NOT good.
I was just about to write something very similar! We have a worrying amount of terrible barnets at the moment, I think it might be the south american influence!
by TonyM on October 23, 2007
Listen all you everton fans stop moaning and complaining. Only one team deserved to win that match. Liverpool had 62% posession compared to your 38%, Liverpool had 7 shots on targat compared to your 1 one shot (Your shot on target was a freak own goal by our own player) Just remember your a small team like Rafa said. You will always be a small team, just think Lucas Leiva turned you guys down gutted hey!!! and to think even worse Momo Sissoko turned you guys down just shows how much of a small team you are.
by Jim on October 24, 2007
this may seem like a silly question but it happens very often. Does every player liverpool sign automatically become the best player in the world?
by Red as blood on October 24, 2007
Every loss is sore and every sore loser is nonsensical. Face it, the fact is, Everton1-2Liverpool @ Goodison Park. Case closed. We'd gladly offer you another chance. Bring it on! See you at Anfield!
I'm not sure what the rule is, wait a second lets ask Lescott.
Agree that the ref got it wrong not awarding Lescott a penalty. Then again, Everton gave clattenburg no other options than to award the 2 penalties to Liverpool cos Hibbert and Neville (not Southall) were so blatant. Probably thinking 'we got away with all that nonsense last season in the same fixture, why not try it again?' You win some, you lose some. Decisions went for the home side last season, so just count your blessings, don't keep crying over spilled milk, learn to live with it boys/girls. Stop moaning about reality of Liverpool's Merseyside triumph and try coming to Anfield for a win. A win, not a draw ok?
by Chegs on October 24, 2007
Every time we play Everton, they overachieve and seem to play well. Then they go to teams like Sunderland or Bolton and scrape a point, then come to us and the whole team plays out of there skin and we play terribly. And I think most pool fans would only admit that they would probably only take Arteta out of the blues team, but would he even get into our team ahead of Gerrard / Alonso / Mascherano? Im not denying that there was an element of luck in the victory, but if you remember the 3-0 last season, they had 3 chances (2 were created by us) and they won 3-0....luck is obviously a cyclic process (and for any uneducated Everton supporters reading, that means IT GOES ROUND IN CIRCLES)
by Jerry on October 24, 2007
I think we solved the england goalie situation. I haven't seen relexes like that since peter schmichel. Seriously I think he's playing in the wrong part of the field, he should really be between the sticks. I also think that if liverpool beat everton in a controversial manner its better than a 7-0 win because it hurts them more, kills them all inside just that little bit more. Some fans get over it, others just carry on and on and on.... go you reds
by sigh.. on October 24, 2007
I don't see what all the fuss is about, once Gerrard cuts in with his leg/knee infront of Hibbert, the penalty kick is going to happen. It's not cheating it's just a very clever play. On the Carragher - Lescott situation; Yes it should have been a penalty but don't blame us cause you didn't get it, calling us cheaters. Blame the weak judge, you hypocrits..christ.
by Malaysian_red on October 24, 2007
Well, you win some you lose some..... The blueshite seemed to think that they were better than us..Come on guys looked at all the chances you had..1 shot on goal???..and you deserved to win??? As for the sending off of Hibbert, all the referees. IMHO the referee only made one mistake that day..not awarding Everton the penalty when Carra was all over Lescott..but that was not our fault. Bottomline is we beat the Blueshite 2-1. Case Closed.

Bitterness (aimed at those bitter blues) (to the tune of Ken Dodds - Happiness) (chorus) Oh bitterness, bitterness The only thing the blues possess, I thank the lord that I’ve been blessed, With none of the bluesh*te bitterness…. To me this world is a wonderful place, A red and white glow all over my face, I feel so good to be alive, European cups, oh we’ve got five…. (chorus) The bitters were living in a land of dreams, “you’ll lose if you ever face a decent team” But Juventus, Chelsea and Milan tried, They all got beat so the bluesh*te cried…. (chorus) At half time AC thought they had us beat, The bluesh*te were dancing in the North Wales streets, But Stevie G played like a man possessed, So all they’ve got now is their bitterness…. (chorus) They said Milan Baros was offside, They say Steven Gerrard took a dive, They say Jerzy Dudek shouldn’t have no pride, But they’ve got none and we’ve got FIVE…. (chorus) Oh bitterness, bitterness, The only thing that they possess, If it wasn’t for Heysel they

To those Everton fans out there that have labelled Gerrard a "Cheat", or a "Gobshite" Is this the same Gerrard you all so proudly shoot your mouths off about him being an Everton Fan?
by jonesy on October 24, 2007
Hard to take criticism of diving from a team that employs Andy Johnson...he's up there with Ronaldo. Yes the same AJ who got the Sheff Utd centre back sent off for imaginery contact...so yoy hypocrite bluenoses don't refer back to the Stevie G pen incident at Sheff Utd...you hypocrites. And then we com eto last season's derby when the bluenoses celebrated Osman and Cahill doing american football style blocking to set up their first goal. Bu tof course that cheating is ok, cos it's in their favour. Typical hypocritical whinging from the city's poor relation.
by Sami_Red on October 24, 2007
Typical of a small team like Everton to complain about everything. You lost...get on with it. It will be great when Everton leave Liverpool - Goodison Park is such an eyesore.
by chillin_uk on October 24, 2007
lescotts claim for apenalty decision was a joke...why would carragher pull him down in the dying minutes, he was backing up into him looking for the foul...
by MAGICSPACEMONKEY on October 24, 2007
WHAT WAS THE RULING ON THE LAST DEFENDER AGAIN? OH YES, THATS IT, IF THE LAST DEFENDER SHOULD COMMIT A FOUL ON THE ATTACKER WHEN THROUGH ON GOAL THE PUNISHMENT IS RED. AS FOR THE HANDBALL IT SEEMS THE TOFFEE'S WANT TO BE ABLE TO APPLY THE OLD FAVOURITE PLAYGROUND RULE OF NEAREST TO GOAL IS GOALKEEPER WHEN IT SUITS THEM, HOW DARE THE REF AND THE RULES DISAGREE.

all i can says is sour grapes u lost @ hme bragging rights belong to liverpool yet again
by moysie feldman on October 24, 2007
i really must complain about the performance of mark clattenberg. First he refuses to send off howard after a blatant handball outside the the box, then he tries to get hibbert off with a yellow card, before gerrard caught him. to cap it all, he refuses to send off lescott for a blatant dive which could have cost us two points. He was seen in kirkby on saturday morning, joining stubbs for his traditional pre-match breakfast of a few pints and a kebab and his wife was seen carrying a tesco bag. He should not be allowed to referee a liverpool game again.
by Jason Willis on October 24, 2007
he looks a fantastic little player that's gonna be great to watch this season! might add that new dimension to the liverpool side that's been a bit lacking of late

How much money changed hands on that one? Kuyt two-footed in the air with malicious intent and well premeditated: result? Gerard diving a few minutes before the penalty (which he was looking for): result? Then the Penalty...last man? That's an interesting interpretation. Bit of shirt-pulling on Gerrard, but he actually fell when their legs got tangled up. Six of one, half-a-dozen. At most a penalty and a yellow. Applying the law? What about applying to to Kuyt? Open and shut red, but what happened? Carragher...blatant pull-down right in front of the ref: result? The SOB essentially admitted after the game what he'd done. Duh. Yet another game for Liverpool thanks to the refs.

Lucas will go on to become one of the best players in the world. Whether or not this happens at Liverpool is another thing but he is a very very special player. Youngest ever player to get the Brazilian player of the year award, and one of the very few holding midfielders ever to get it. In the past it has gone to flair players like Zico, Ronaldo, Romario and Ronaldihno, but Lucas won it last year. Mark my words, this lad is the real deal, and in time will be better than Gerrard, Alsono and the rest.

This article was about as good as Liverpools performance in the Champions League, missing Clattenburg last night was you? Everton were robbed of at least one penalty, Kuyt should've walked for his Bruce Lee impression, Gerrard trynig to get a red for Hibbert after his dive is a booking in itself! It's just as bad as waving an imaginary card. Funny when all decisions are fair you'll lose to a team like Besiktas, it's only October and your season is over!
by Andy on October 25, 2007
Uhh, does this then mean that Everton's season was over before it had started? You don't challenge for the league, you don't challenge in Europe, you try to scrape in the top 7 every season, you might as well not even bother! Release a DVD of that, son.
by NikeIt on November 08, 2007
Lucas Leiva played great in the Merseyside derby, and deserved to score, for some 'unknown' reason I don't see Phil Neville's handball heroic at all, in football only the goalkeeper can handle the ball in the box, and not the right-back who was Phil Neville that day.
by 6Cra6Zy6 on December 26, 2007
Lucas is a great player but i don't see him improving if he stays at LFC. we already have a working midfield with stevie, alonso and mascherano so unless we go for a 4-5-1, he will rarely get to play. that is the moto of Rafa. the best will always be in the team while others are just bench warmers...let him play in other leagues and improve and in 3-4 years, he may become the next stevie G!
