Mark Hughes has done it again. The Blackburn manager is well known for scouring Europe for bargain buys and coming up with the goods. Just look at last year's Benni McCarthy and this summer's Roque Santa Cruz. Although these players were fairly well known, they have still exceeded all expectations in how well they have fitted into the English game. A forgotten hero in the Blackburn side however is Christopher Samba, probably the best of all the bargains.

Bought at the beginning of the year from the Bundesliga's Hertha Berlin, Samba has become a cult hero at Blackburn. At 6ft 4in, he is a tower of strength and his powerful heading and robust tackling in the centre of defence have helped Blackburn get away to a great start this season, losing just twice.

Samba was signed for £400,000, which in this day and age is nothing for one of the best defenders in the league. Yes, Rio Ferdinand and John Terry may have a little more skill and a better all-round game than Samba, but these players also have far more experience and have played at the highest level for their country.

‘Hughes is trying to build a spirit in the team and it seems to be working. He needs to keep hold of bargain buys such as Samba.’

Samba is still only 23 and has plenty of time to develop. He has already starting scoring some important goals – witness the last-minute strike against Tottenham which gave Rovers another vital win.

Samba fits in well with the type of game Blackburn play. He and fellow central defenders Ryan Nelson and Andre Ooijer maintain a strong presence at the back and are not afraid to tackle hard and defend their goal. And with his height Samba is a great addition to set plays where he can tower over opposition defenders during corner kicks.

The Democratic Republic of Congo international is loved at Blackburn. He may not be well known yet in the Premier League but give him a few more years in England and he is sure to make his mark more consistently and he will be attracting football's moneyed classes. But be warned, it's hands off! Hughes is trying to build a spirit in the team and it seems to be working. He needs to keep hold of bargain buys such as Samba and Santa Cruz in order to maintain Blackburn's rise to the top of the football ladder.
