Mark Hughes has done it again. The Blackburn manager is well known for scouring Europe for bargain buys and coming up with the goods. Just look at last year's Benni McCarthy and this summer's Roque Santa Cruz. Although these players were fairly well known, they have still exceeded all expectations in how well they have fitted into the English game. A forgotten hero in the Blackburn side however is Christopher Samba, probably the best of all the bargains.
Bought at the beginning of the year from the Bundesliga's Hertha Berlin, Samba has become a cult hero at Blackburn. At 6ft 4in, he is a tower of strength and his powerful heading and robust tackling in the centre of defence have helped Blackburn get away to a great start this season, losing just twice.
Samba was signed for £400,000, which in this day and age is nothing for one of the best defenders in the league. Yes, Rio Ferdinand and John Terry may have a little more skill and a better all-round game than Samba, but these players also have far more experience and have played at the highest level for their country.
Samba is still only 23 and has plenty of time to develop. He has already starting scoring some important goals – witness the last-minute strike against Tottenham which gave Rovers another vital win.
Samba fits in well with the type of game Blackburn play. He and fellow central defenders Ryan Nelson and Andre Ooijer maintain a strong presence at the back and are not afraid to tackle hard and defend their goal. And with his height Samba is a great addition to set plays where he can tower over opposition defenders during corner kicks.
The Democratic Republic of Congo international is loved at Blackburn. He may not be well known yet in the Premier League but give him a few more years in England and he is sure to make his mark more consistently and he will be attracting football's moneyed classes. But be warned, it's hands off! Hughes is trying to build a spirit in the team and it seems to be working. He needs to keep hold of bargain buys such as Samba and Santa Cruz in order to maintain Blackburn's rise to the top of the football ladder.

Sportingo are not helping you at all with that title, you never once stated you thought he was the bargain of the century. You correctly stated he needed time and in a few years if he keeps it up he may well be although if he maintains these levels, with all due respect to Blackburn, I feel he will be at a bigger club. Not necessarily England either

Bargain of the Century was and still is Kolo Toure.

it doesn't matter what the size of team is... in fact seeing as Samba was instrumental in stopping Liverpool from scoring I would say he is definately the bargain of the century. He dosn;t need anyone specific alongside him at Centre Back... Nelsen, Ooijer, Zurab he can play alongside them all. When Peter The Freak came on at Ewood he found that Big Chris was more than a match for his height and Chris also has the strength. 10 bounds and he is at the half way line, he'll even have run from deep and create opportunities... let's face it... in the transfer market Sparky is much more savvy the Rafa Bend-The-Knees !

yeah and I guess his wages are a bargain too.

"Yes, Rio Ferdinand and John Terry may have a little more skill" Are you kidding me? Samba is easily more comfortable on the ball than Terry or Ferdinand - plus, he's faster than both in a sprint and arguably hits the ball cleaner than either of them. I'm not saying that makes him a better defender... merely pointing out that skillwise, he's the better of the three. I'm not joking, and you can call it bias if you want, but this kid Samba is the real-deal. And just in case any predatory managers are lurking in the shadows ready to try to tempt him away from Ewood, be fore-warned, he's just penned a NEW 5-year deal and won't be leaving Rovers for anything short of £10m for the first 2 years of that particular contract.

I almost didn't post because its so obvious he isn't. Anelka 500k? Fabregas free? Vieira £3.5m? Toure as someone else mentioned? Thats just at one club who are better. Its just a silly thing to write, the title gets people's backs up from the go!

Just look at most of the Arsenal Squad of Bargain of the Season.

when we played them at goodison we saw samba outrun andy johnson all flippin game. culdnt believe how big and fast he was. would love moyes to make a cheeky bid for him haha

Fabregas, Vieira both bargains.
by dave on November 15, 2007
Wel aside from talent grown in the accadamies I would say that Roy Keane, David Beckham, Fabregas or even David Seaman were bigger bargains.

I think most people would point to Anelka for that particular accolade. Bought for 500k, helped Arsenal win the double (scoring in the FA Cup final), and then being sold to Madrid for 22.3 million. Its like buying an old fiesta, winning the F1 championship in it and then selling it at 45X the price you paid for it.. Oh, and guess who Arsenal bought with the proceeds?
Okay point taken.. perhaps not the bargain of the century... indeed not even the bargain of the Rovers squads past and present (Benni, Tugay, Nelsen, Roque, Shearer, Sutton, Duff, Dunne, Bentley, etc, etc) But he one of the most recent bargains and a real "find" plus... A great name to sing! Let's all do the Samba, la la la

Clealry your impaired sight did not allow you to see it was Kuyt and Gerrard missing great chances that meant we left Ewood with just a point, nothing to do with your defense. Toffeeboy, not sure why Samba woukld want to take a step down or sideways by joining Everton? Make

Typical extreme Daily Star style headline from 'Sportingo'; however, Samba was definitely the bargain of last season and is one hell of a player. Good work Blackburn and Mark Hughes.
by YidArmy on November 15, 2007
I'd say Kevin Doyle was just as much a bargain for Reading when they paid Cork 50 guineas and a sheep for him...or however much he cost
by svensmen on November 15, 2007
As a lot of other posters have pointed out already, he's certainly not bargain of the century, but he's definitely been the bargain of this premier league season so far 400k? wow, unbelievable! don't know how mark hughes does it. Anyway, people shouldn't forget Micah Richards!
by berbs a goodun on November 15, 2007
hes flurking good. scored a peach against our lot the jammy sod and always looked a proper threat coming up for set-pieces. hes 7foot tall isnt he?
by Ryan on November 15, 2007
Released from Nottingham Forest because he was told he was 'too small', signed on a free for Man City. Not sure exactly on the fee he went for, but wasn't it roughly £24m? I think that might just be the best mathematically - Even if the fee's wrong it was in the same ball park as the Anelka profit

how can samba be the bargain of the century and mark hughes has done it again, that is ridiculous!!!!!!!! arsenal has the bargain of the century in kolo, eboue, cesc, ade and arsene has done it again and again, mark hughes has done nothing. samba is so far away to being like the top defenders like rio, kolo, terry.
by Jimmy Riddle on November 15, 2007
Gianfranco Zola Easily Bargain of the century
by Spursforever!! on November 15, 2007
I have been very impressed with him,not just with the goal he scored against us,he looks an amzing prospect.Well done to whoever scouted him at Blackburn
