With 10 goals scored in the last two games and Liverpool’s first unchanged team in over a year, is Rafa Benitez close to discovering his best XI? I personally don’t think so. Everything seems positive right now, but there are problems looming on the horizon with the return to action of a couple of key players, namely Xabi Alonso and Daniel Agger. This might seem like a blessing for Liverpool, but how is Rafa Benitez going to accommodate these players and not unbalance a winning team? A more pertinent question is how will he accommodate Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano and Alonso? At present, the Gerrard/Mascherano partnership has been forced upon Rafa due to injuries, but given the Spaniard’s predilection for rotation, it seems inevitable that changes will be made. ‘Whilst Gerrard has upped his performance level after the humiliation of the Everton substitution, the same old problems of positional indiscipline and creative paucity still exist.’In my view, a winning team should never be tinkered with, regardless of who is waiting in the wings. The one exception to this rule should be Fernando Torres, who should always start if he is fit, as he offers skill and creativity that no other Liverpool player possesses. Agger’s return to the first team at the expense of Sami Hyypia is all but assured, despite Hyypia's important contribution to Liverpool’s recent solidity. Three clean sheets in a row and a man-of-the-match performance against Fulham should be enough to keep the Finn in the team, but that won’t happen. After the last two results, the Steven Gerrard fan club will be out in force trying to convince everyone that his role in centre midfield is the reason for Liverpool’s mini-resurgence. Whilst Gerrard has upped his performance level after the humiliation of the Everton substitution, the same old problems of positional indiscipline and creative paucity still exist, disguised by the mask of good results.
But mark my words: Liverpool will not win the league unless Rafa adopts the formation and personnel in the three examples above.

Mate, if you know ANYTHING about football then you would realise that writing this article was a) a waste of ur time and b) a waste of mine. Its like saying Ade Akinbiyi deserved an England call-up; Gerrard is easily Liverpools best player by a country mile, and on his day is probably the best midfielder in the world. Do yaself a favour; forget journalism, become and estate agent...

Cracking article. May have to print that out and put it on my wall to show me how real Man Utd fans feel.

dream on mate. gerrard stops the team from falling apart. against the lower teams our problem is hoofing it up from defense etc. With agger it gives us something better, and alonso behind gerrard means he can go on charging runs instead of having to sit and be the playermaker. You cant really judge on the best starting 11 we have with so many injurys atm. Agger and Alonso give us so much more by just being on the pitch, it means more possession and passing around, carra and hyypia hardly play killer balls, same for masch.

You are really having fun winding up the Liverpool fans today, aren't you?

Jamie Kanwar is a lfc fan, no doubt about that, but he's also a Gerrard-hater for whatever reasons. And, it just get painful at times. He's get banned on quite a few forums for logging on only to bash Stevie G.

All Liverpool fans know the following: a) Benitez won't change his ways b) Gerrard is the best player we have c) Gerrard on the right in a free roaming role is best for the side d) players have bad matches e) Stevie-G has scored 5 goals in the last 6 matches f) we haven't spent near the amount of money as Man U or Chelsea/Arsenal won't win the league anyhow You're not a Liverpool fan, you're a wind-up merchant and crap writes

Get your facts straight Lucas - I was banned from ONE forum (ThisIsAnfield.com) for having the audacity to suggest LFC should sell Gerrard. People on the site didn't like my views and ultimately conspired to have me banned. Anyway, what is it with all this 'wannabe' crap?! Is stuff like that supposed to offend me? Am I supposed to hang my head and give up?! All I am interested in is gauging opinion of fellow Liverpool fans. You can hurl all the insults you like - if I'm annoying the blind faith brigade who believe any criticism of LFC is heresy and blanket praise is synonmous with 'support' then I am doing something right. I'm just a fan with a different set of opinions to the mass media-brainwashed sheep masquerading as fans. If you can't hack it, tough!

I have to agree with this article about Gerrard being bigger than the club and its a pitty, specially as we have often dunn well without him. I Know hes our best player(although i think that soon will be considered to be Torres), but the team often does not seem to function with him on the field. Other players seem to be to scared to do things on there own, I also get anoyed when things are not going his way he makes stupid fouls and gets moody. Our best midfiled is Mascerano Alonso, rrard should be moved to the right as there are better midfilders in the middle Gerrard might be better than both of them but Mascerano is better in defending and Alonso is a better passer and distributer. Gerrard has a lot of both but like the article said they are specialist in one of the attributes. I dont want to sell Gerrard but i would like him to axept to be moved to the good of the team. He then could be free to move frely around the field, wich he does allredy, he goes away from his responsibilitys to often, and Carra s

I think you bring up a lot of interesting points. As you can see from the comments above, many Liverpool fans have their heads in the sand with respect to Gerrard. Although he's an amazing player, capable of turning any game, he is also very arrogent in thinking he deserves his place in the centre of midfield. When played there he lacks dicipline and is unable to dictate play. Ideally I think Benitez should play him on the right, where he excelled a couple of seasons ago, this would make way for Alonso and Mascherano in the centre. If Gerrard starts to kick up a fuss about playing there I think we should get rid...simple as that.

I cant believe i just read an article about how steven gerrard shouldnt be in the liverpool team. He is currently in top 10 fifa players int he world and somehow u believe he is not good enough for us? This is astonishing and i hope a joke, stevie is immense and even when we play bad he is the one that looks like he could save us. I agree a place needs to be sorted for xabi alongside masch and stevie but u dont leave world class palyers out whovere you are!

Firstly - Peter Gills comment is completely uncalled for and unacceptable Secondly I believe that Macherano and Alonso are thebest midfield partnership but we should revet to a 433 Reina Arbeloa, Carra, Agger, Aurelio (or new LB) Mascherano, Alonso with Gerrard just ahead Babel and Torres romaing and interchanging either side of Crouch. The midfield is strong enough to cope with giving Babel and Torres free reign and Gerrard will defend from the front better than being sat in CM.
Jaimie you are a f***king moron An ameoba has more brain cells than you
I feel I must correct you here. An amoeba is a single celled organism and thus incapable of having 'cells', let alone brain cells. I have to say, I'm disappointed by the standard of insults so far! No wit. No imagination. Just the same old recycled crap.

its gerrard and alonso before mascherano always, thats how we set up at the begining of the season when we were looking like challangers and playing good football, and as for aurelio hes to injury prone and inconsistent, riise lost some form but i still think hes a better player
