Rafa Benitez said at the beginning of the season that he was happy with the squad he had, and there was a big improvement over last year's team. But it seems the squad weren’t too happy with it. Several players have voiced their concerns over lack of playing time  - even though Rafa rotates more than a spinning top!.

The players to voice their displeasure have been Scott Carson, Peter Crouch and Momo Sissoko. If the press are to be believed, we will be offloading these players for £10m, £10m and £7m respectively. Rafa stated a few weeks ago that he had £20m to spend without income from transfer dealings. There have also been strong rumours that Aston Villa are willing to pay £7m for John Arne Riise. This adds up to a mind-boggling £54m that will come into the club for selling players that, bar Riise, hardly play for the first team.

I’m sure that the owners will take some of that money to pay the ever-escalating costs of the stadium, but I think Rafa will have around £40m to spend. The squad will be threadbare in a few positions, so this is my guess as to what might happen:

'I’m sure that the owners will take some of the money to pay the ever-escalating costs of the stadium, but I think Rafa will have around £40m to spend'

Goalkeeper: Reina, Itandje, Martin – no change;
Right-back: Finnan, Arbeloa – no change;
Centre-back: Hyypia, Carragher, Agger, new signing (see left-back);
Left-back: Aurelio, new signing (the Gabriel Heinze for £6m rumours will just not stop and can cover centre-back);
Right midfield: Pennant, Benayoun, new signing (Alessandro Mancini for £8m from Roma looks favourite);
Central midfield: Mascherano (would cost £17m to buy him out of his loan deal), Alonso, Gerrard, Lucas – no change;
Left midfield: Babel (can cover up-front as well), Kewell – no change;
Strikers: Kuyt, Voronin, Torres – no change (unless we can find a gem for £10m).

Of course I’m taking Javier Mascherano’s cost into this. If that were to free up, or all the money was available, then I would move Ryan Babel into a striker's position and go hell for leather for Ricardo Quaresma for £20m. I guess most of these won’t happen, and the speculation will increase as the new year approaches - but I would be ecstatic with these signings.
