Tottenham coach Juande Ramos is planning a £30m raid on Valencia's David Villa as he is worried Dimitar Berbatov still wants to quit the club (News of the World). Should he not be more worried that the brilliant Villa would want to join Spurs?
Still at White Hart Lane, NOTW rivals The People report that Ramos is looking to lure unsettled Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby away from the Emirates for what looks like a snip at £7m.
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce wants to take his former Bolton defender Tal Ben-Haim to Tyneside for a knockdown £1m from Chelsea (People). Even if Avram Grant does not give him regular runouts, why would Ben-Haim give up the designer boutiques of the King’s Road for Primark and Netto in Newcastle, if you get the drift?
Allardyce is also planning another raid on his former club Bolton in a bid to take Senegal midfielder El-Hadji Diouf to St James' Park (various). Diouf is more trouble than he is worth and makes the front pages more than the back. It’s surely a sign of growing despair on Tyneside that the only way Allardyce feels he can halt what looks like a troubling slide is to go back to the future.
Birmingham are locked in a desperate scrap to stop Steve Bruce from taking his assistant Eric Black to Wigan Athletic (Daily Star Sunday). I despair of football chairmen sometimes, especially one like Dave Whelan who was a top-division player in his day. What does Bruce have that endears him to the Wigan supremo, aside from taking Birmingham up and down divisions like a yoyo on crack?
David Beckham insists he would sacrifice the chance to win his 100th cap in exchange for England grabbing a Euro 2008 place (Sunday Express). Well, isn’t that a magnificent gesture by the best player in the Galaxy? And given the amount (and quality) of football that Beckham has played in Disneyland, Steve McClaren would be away with the fairies to pick Becks.
Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is to be handed more than £150m by owner Thaksin Shinawatra for new players (Mail on Sunday). Now that is a lot of envelopes. Always an exponent of the beautiful game, Sven’s credibility is possibly under scrutiny with the news that City are giving trials to three players from Shanghai Shen Hua, their new partner club in China (Mail on Sunday).
Striker Gao Lin, 21 will be joined at City's Carrington training ground by 19-year-old goalkeeper Wang Da Lei and midfielder Mao Jianqing, 22. Boxing aficianados will remember Gao Lin from the brawl at the Queen Park Rangers training ground earlier in the year which resulted in hospitalisation for a team-mate.
Alan Shearer has admitted he wants to succeed McClaren as England coach (various) Hang on Alan, wouldn’t it be a better idea to cut your teeth with a club first and see how good you are? And judging by Shearer’s gormless observations in the TV studio, one can’t imagine half-time team talks being on the upper end of the motivational scale.

Why do you think that newcastle is only about low end retailers., In the North East we have some of the best outdoor pursuits in the country, plethora of cultural attractions and something to cater to almost every taste. We have more than enough shops to cater to every lifestyle, also if it were not for Lord armstrong who lived and experimented at Cragside (20 miles north of newcastle) who knows when the light would have been invented or possibly even more relevant there is also Stepenson and the railway but if you like to think about a scandinavian budget food store and a Irish clothing store thats your loss, and there is the issue that Berbatov idolizes our old No 9. But to be fair with your bigoted views I'm quite glad that we don't get to many london based journalists making the trek (I believe the flying time is 45 mins) Im sure that amount of time is far to great for people who are so self absorbed that they feel a great need to try to belittle the population of an entire city or sometimes even region

The media show once again that they do not understand football. Local rivals like Spurs/Arsenal will not let the other buy their first team players.
by Kadam on November 18, 2007
The game has changed - of course local rivalry is important but money talks these days!! Besides stranger things have happened - Campbell to Arsenal, Gallas to Arsenal, Cole to Chelsea. Need i say more??

Great to hear Bent having a go with our national squad.I wonder how many Arsenal fans will be watching the game on Wednesday and cheering for there beloved countrymen.Arsene Wenger, he's quality..When was the last time a Spurs player and an Arsenal player shared an english dressing room? Pride of North London, that's a classic....Oh well gooners you can take you're pick..Is there a french game that night..Come on England Come on you Spurs

The comments about Newcastle not being 'glamorous' are absolutely pathetic. Are the news articles on this site written with intent of annoying fans? I would be very surprised if we signed Ben haim (I personally don't think we need him and he is overhyped) Rozehanl and Faye are both better defenders, they jsut need time playing with each other and not constant changing of the defence

...and when was the last time a spurs player made a difference in an england shirt? Try your advice from the previous posts.

what will arsenal be like without wenger at the helm, scary thought for you gooner fans, when he retires, esepcially with the turmoil the club has been through the last couple of seasons, losing key players, and expecting youth to make the step up, which in fairness they have, but all accounts have come to your over 60 manager. spurs for the future. plus shearer post match anaylsis, quality, almost as good as john motson's, definately manager material. maybe for a division two club. COYS.

As one of the 'basic treatment' for both England and Newcastle United, both team need to go back to their trade marks - England for the 'long ball game' and Newcastle for the 'free flow attcking game'. So, Sam Allardyce for England and Keegan & Sheraer for Newcastle! This is what we call a 'WIN-WIN SOLUTION'! Toon Army...Lets start this campaign!
by Paull on November 19, 2007
Maybe Arsenal dont have many English players but that is because we want to win things and until we find the best English players, not sub standard overpriced strikers ie Darren Bent, we probably wont have more English players in the team, our position in the league speaks for us as does Tottenham Hotspurs.
by CyToon on November 19, 2007
Why have a dig at Shearere, he never said he wanted the England job, it was you bl00dy journo's who make these stories up all the time!, If anyone from teh north takes over from McClaren, it'll be Big Sam, not Shearer!! As for Bent playing for England on Wednesday, I hope he does do well, but not because he's a Spurts player but because he's playing to get us qualified, as for him being a £16m player, get a life, he's probably worth around £6m at most!
...and when was the last time a spurs player made a difference in an england shirt? Try your advice from the previous posts.
As for Wenger leaving, Ferguson is several years ahead of Wenger age wise......and he's still doing the business, with the help of 100,s of millions of pounds of course. Will spurs be anywhere near to challenging Arsenal by the time Wenger retires??? As usual, you'll be on your 15th manager in the last 2 years and be light years behind us, again!
....the swamp dwelling, soap dodging fraternity have woken up and decided to bash out a message using a clenched fist on there keyboard with "oversized" buttons. Well thanks for that enlightened and colourful message, no more crayons for you, now back to the corner with your pointy white hat with a large D on it, you ignorant little plank!

Why would Spurs want to buy the cast offs from the gooner scum we never want any more of the venger s*** in a couple of years time when they realise that to get the national team up to scratch teams must have a quota of British players in thier teams not a breeding ground for france and spain (lpool)the foriegn players have made it a more exciting league but it is not helping our national teams. At least it gives journalists a reason to run us down e.g. that gooner woolnough.
by Alf on November 19, 2007
As usual another spurs fan living in fantasy land. the FA will change EU employment law will they? Top comments gumbo. And the reason the media run you boys down is because you spent all summer boring them you were a top four club. LOL
by billy1982 on November 19, 2007
spurs would probably want to buy diaby due to the fact that he's better then any other midfield player that you have. what does that say about tottenham, that a gooner scum cast off (as u put it) can walk staight into your first team?
