Regardless of the result on Wednesday, I'm pretty sure Steve McClaren is going to get the sack. It won't really bother him because he's made his money and as an ex-England manager he'll have a job in the media for life.

The worrying thing for all us Aston Villa supporters is the speculation that the next manager will be Martin O'Neill. Most think that if England qualify, McClaren is safe in his job - but I think the opposite. If England qualify the first thing the FA have to do is sack him because it's clear he's not up to the job.

If England don't qualify then there is no rush on replacing him as there is nothing to play for. Maybe O'Neill can manage Villa and England at the same time.

The thing that has got Aston Villa fans worried is that he is refusing to rule himself out and there are rumours that he was in New York working on an exit strategy with Randy Lerner this week.

On the opposite end of the scale, you've got Alan Curbishley absolutely ruling himself out of the England job - wouldn't it be nice if our manager did that?

You know what; I'm actually not that bothered as I believe O'Neill can do both jobs. He has to pick the squad, pick his starting 11 and substitutes and then motivate them. Everything else will be done by the players' clubs and you'd fully hope that they know how to play in their respective positions.

Some will probably say he couldn't do both jobs but I'm of the opinion that the England job is more about getting the players up for a game - the team pretty much picks itself.

Whatever your opinion, it would be nice if O'Neill ruled himself out and didn't come out saying: "Let's take it one step at a time. That's the way to run with it.

"My own view, and I'm not just saying it for the sake of it, is that England's recent performances have been excellent."
