There are so many questions to ask this morning after the extraordinary events at Wembley last night. But let us for one moment forget all the sub issues such as finding a new manager, new players or a foreign quota. Let us simply ask the question why England are not going to be participating at Euro 2008.
It is going to be very strange but with hindsight, many of us will admit that they did not deserve to go through. You do not concede goals at home - one is acceptable (just) but three? And on English territory? Where is the pride in that?
Also, Croatia and Russia have played the most attractive football during this whole campaign. They have had creativity in truckloads and have worked to their strengths - attacking. England, meanwhile, still believe in the myth that defending a lead or goal leads to victory. It doesn't. In modern football, the only way to effectively defend is to attack.
England became very defensive last night when they clawed their way back into the match and Croatia, who are more technically astute and have an excellent team chemistry, must have thought Christmas had come early.
So what to do? The team does not work well together, while the now-departed manager was too weak and displaced players who are actually good, i.e David Beckham. The FA should have got rid of Steve McClaren when they saw his tactics against Croatia in Zagreb.
Following McClaren's departure, an authoritarian figure must be brought in to add discipline, maybe Jose Mourinho, Felipe Scolari or Marcelo Lippi. Or perhaps even Sam Allardyce. Secondly, wasters such as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Bridge should be dropped until they prove they are worthy of the England shirt. Finally, Barwick should resign as he appointed McClaren - it is his administration that has failed the English.
Of course, this is all wishful thinking and it will never happen. At this moment in time, the grim fact that England will have an empty summer has not settled in our minds. Nothing will happen as we have been in the same position before - most recently after the 2006 World Cup, where we appointed Sven-Goran Eriksson's second in command. McClaren was sure to bring a new way of thinking, wasn't he?
It is often said that the greatest success stories of the football world are built upon past failures, as it is the only way to learn. The bitter pill of truth motivates you to better yourself. An example is when the French failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1994. A realisation set in, hard work was implemented and as a result, pride was restored in 1998 and 2000 with victories in the World Cup and the European Championships.
A recent example is the rise of Arsenal, who have suffered for the past two years but are now fulfilling their potential. The Catholics are correct when they say that through suffering comes celebration. But alas, this can only occur with hard work behind the scenes as well as on the pitch.

I believe that the only one right for this job is Jose mourinho. And thats quite funny, since ima Liverpool fan, who used to hate his guts and laugh myself to tears when we beat em twice in the semis. HAHa - still laughing. Anyway, he did a fine job at Chelsea and never lost and home soil. Something we could use at wembley, to avoid shit defeats like yesterdays.. Put him on FA, he'll make us win!

Whether he's English or not should not be the issue. Whether he can do the job should be the issue. Last time around some English FA cronies that they should opt for an English man. And look what they got, a clown. Benny Hill would have done a better job.If the E.F.A. should not restrict its choice to an English man, but should consider other candidates from the British Isles, like Gordon Strachan, Martin O'Neill, Lawrie Sanchez. For me the English candidates that should be considered are Steve Coppell and Harry Redknapp - all the above have had a large measure of success with the clubs they managed and have shown to one and all that they are achievers. Maybe someone would also like to include Sam Allardyce. He would have been the best choice last year, but not now, Big Sam is turning out to be a Big Mouth too, and that would do no good for England. Which brings me to whether we should consider Mourinho for the job. Whilst I will not deny him the fact that had it not been for him (and a fair share of Abramov

They simply need a disclpinarian and not a yes man like our previous 3 managers. Redknapp is a great motivater at club level but has never been exposed to the top level really. His teams play good football and there is always a great buzz at all clubs he has managed. Mourinio has today distanced himself from the job but I don't think he will do any better than Erikssen or McLaren. He's a personality but I think that it often gets in the way. Steve Coppell would be an interesting choice but still yet to prove himself at a higher level. I think that Arsene Wegner should consider throwing his hat in the ring. The game has moved on and with his tactical awareness and attractive Football at Arsenal he would be perfect. He is without a doubt the opitome of football today.

Well the fa seem to have pulled their finger from up mclarens arse and put him in the job center where he belongs, maybe now they shall appoint a mon who should have had it in the 1st place, We don't wanna go down the lines of a none english manager so sam allydyce is definately the man 4 the job, maybe this time the fukwits at the fa will get their job done right.

The FA cocked up last time by promoting McClaren... he done naff all at Boro... he done nowt different at England than Sven... he proved himself! Big Sam Allardyce wanted that role. He turned Bolton into a Euro and top 8 side. He believes the squad begins with a strong behind the scenes crew. He's a no-nonsense guy that'll take no shit and will rock the boat with the egotistical let-downs on the pitch. He'll have no quarms about not playing Gerrard and Lampard together and has the tactical ability to shuffle things. Big Sam's the man!

Rumour has it that Rafa Benitez is interested in the vacant England Position, who knows a straight swap for McLaren could be on the cards. Lets face it 2 managers who don't have a clue about the english game!!
