I’m not exactly overjoyed that Scotland beat World Cup finalists France while England surprisingly failed to get the better of Macedonia.
As a patriotic Brit, nothing delights me more than to see a home victory against overseas opposition. But where Scotland are concerned, I draw a line. In fact, I even take a little pleasure at seeing them lose. And my feelings have nothing to do with the team or their manager Walter Smith, now being hailed a national hero.
The problem is that their followers are to my mind the most bigoted, over-patriotic supporters on earth when it comes to football. I know, I’ve lived and worked with them on both sides of the border. And, almost to a man (and woman), they stand totally united whenever England play – in support of the opposition. Where does all the anti-English bias stem from? Who knows?
I can only guess that it dates back to the Treaty of Union in 1707, before which Scotland was an independent country. Then the English parliament, using a mixture of blackmail and bribery, persuaded a powerful group of Scottish aristocrats to vote for the union of the two countries’ legislatures.
If that’s the reason today’s Scots want to see the English get their come-uppance in the sports arena, then their logic defies logic. However, I suspect the super-hype of the so-called ‘British’ media in the build-up to England games also plays a part. The back benches of London-based national newspapers would undoubtedly deny it, but there’s no question that other home nations always play second fiddle when the European Championship and World Cup come around. So perhaps it’s the media the Scots want to see humiliated rather than the England team. You tell me.
At the age of 20 I left Wales for London, and later Manchester, without ever encountering another example of extreme bias against the English. Apart from the three years or so I spent north of the border. OK, England are not exactly flavour of the month in the other home countries – but the Scottish obsession with hating the English defies belief.
What I find really unfair is that when Scotland are playing, many English fans wish them well. Indeed, I am sure a large proportion were absolutely delighted at Saturday Hampden Park result.
But perhaps that’s because they dislike the French even more than the Jocks.

You are BANG on correct. Its not we hate England or the English. But the Media hype of the so called British broadcasters about England and how England should just turn up and win! You have good players, you have a good team but NO team should expect to win every game and NO team should expect to win every CUP or do you think the media in Italy, France, Germany all expect to win every game, they hope they do, they think they should but they never expect! (exception could be Brazil but they are just daft when it comes to football). Examples? I hear you say? No Problem..... Narey, David scores a 40 yard screamer to put Scotland 1 up against Brazil! 40 yards, top corner, the world went how did he do that? The english panel at half time agreed "It was a toe poke" WHAT? if Gerrard did that now we would be sick! Sick of seeing the greatest goal of all time. One final point, I find the term Jock (sweaty sock etc.) offensive. We sing "we hate England and we hate England" in the same way a Man

I qoute "To my amazement, many of the staff came in to the office adorned with German-related regalia, from the black, red and yellow Bundesflagge to a stick of bratwurst and, in one unbelievably tasteless instance, a pair of jackboots." I have a question - do you consider the helmet wearing dambuster singing England fans at the world cup tasteless? I live and work in England i have no problem with English people, however as our biggest rivals i do enjoy seeing your FOOTBALL team lose. This is entirely down to your smug and self righous media and it has nothing to do with hating English people.

In answer to Ali's question about English fans' behaviour at the World Cup, my answer is yes, I think all xenophobic behaviour is tasteless. However, this was just a mindless few. The people I worked with in Scotland were anything but mindless - they were professional journalists at a very high level, most of them graduates. If they could behave like this, it's hardly surprising that ordinary, less-educated Scottish fans are so prejudiced against all England teams. I agree that the English media has a lot to answer for and their attitude to my own country, Wales, is just as bad. But that's hardly a reason to scream so forcibly for the opposition at every opportunity. Wayne Rooney doesn't play for The Sun, you know!

English fans support Scotland and wish them well? Not any more we don't! Actually i'm not sure we ever did - but nowadays most people are either entirely indifferent or quietly pleased when they lose - we just don't dress up and scream about it.

Come on now. There a little more to it that that. If you invade countries, then what do you ever expect. I'm Irish, we will welcome England in February into Croke Park. An 82,00 seater stadium built by the an amateus organisation who organise gaa football and hurling, games that the Brits tried to force us to stop playing, while stopping us speaking our own language. A stadium when inthe early part of last cenury was invaded on a match day by the Brits who opened fire and shot the goalie dead along with several spectators. But we won't cheer for the team that you play against in anything. No, we rise abouve it. So welcome, England in February to Croke Park. You're in one for good hiding too.
