UEFA Cup: Everton and Spurs are a real six-hit as Bolton sound Red alert

Tottenham and the Toffees look good bets to reach the knockout stage. But it looks tough for Gary Megson's men - and Aberdeen seem to be out of it.

With three teams advancing from each five-team group in the UEFA Cup, I figure that a final tally of six points from the four games would be enough to do the trick. Right now seven squads have reached that threshold: Everton, FC Zurich, Tottenham, Panathinaikos, Hamburg, Helsingborg and Bordeaux. Everton, Zurich, Panathinaikos and HSV have only played twice.

Also in good shape are Zenit St. Petersburg, Fiorentina and Bayern Munich with five points, as well as teams with four points from two games (AZ Alkmaar, Villareal, Spartak Moscow, Anderlecht, Atletico Madrid, FC. Basle and Aris Thessaloniki).

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Larissa and Toulouse both have zero points from three games and are mathematically eliminated already. On life support are Aberdeen, Elfsborg and Rennes, with one point each from three games. Besides winning their last game, these three sides are going to need a lot of help from other teams in the group if they're going to advance to the round of 32.

As far as I can tell, everybody else can still "control their own destiny" by winning out - even Austria Vienna and the team formerly known as Red Star Belgrade, both of whom have zero points with two games played.

I think both Spurs & Everton have a great chance of winning the UEFA Cup this season, we are both taking it seriously Everton will qualify top of thier group on Wednesday and hopefully Spurs will get a result at Anderlecht on Thursday if we can be kept apart it would make a great final in Manchester. It would be perfect for me as I am a Spurs fanatic but also have a lot of time for Everton as I consider Harry Catterick one of the best managers of his time.

I thought finishing 3rd in your group meant you were pitted against one of the teams dropping out of the champions league, is this not the case anymore?

Red Star never changed the name of the club. The only difference is that now UEFA is printing our name in Serbian instead of translating it into English as they did in the past. Crvena Zvezda means Red Star and no it's not Russian. Even in Serbia many people still wear shirts that say Red Star and the club wants to be known by western european fans as well. Refering to the club as Red Star or Crvena Zvezda makes no difference it's just probably easier for you guys to pronounce lol. Anyways just wanted to say that Bolton are a quality side and the match on Thursday will be a spectacle. Good luck to the Toffees hopefully we can both qualify although it seems unlikely at this point.
