Danny Guthrie has done nothing less than impress the Bolton Wanderers staff. Talks are already circulating of a long-term contract. He made his debut in the Carling Cup and scored. In the UEFA Cup, he put on a dazzling performance against German powerhouse Bayern Munich. By the way, he is on loan from Liverpool.

Rafa Benitez has spent over £28m on players under the age of 21 during his tenure. So far I have only seen Lucas Leiva and Ryan Babel actually offer something. Liverpool are the same club that produced the likes of Jaime Carragher and Steven Gerrard. I have no problem with buying young players, but they should get a fair shot at the first team.

Just look at Guthrie. Impressive reserve matches and an emergency loan deal with Southampton earned him the opportunity to be loaned to a Premier League club. I felt that Guthrie should have at least stayed until  January before going out on loan.

Reserve captain Jack Hobbs was introduced in the 4-0 victory over Bolton. While he may have not been overly impressive, all that matters is that he didn't mess up in the 40 minutes he was given. Let's take Krisztian Nemeth,  who was the first signing of the summer transfer window for Benitez. He made his debut for the reserves in early December. Within 35 minutes he had netted twice.

Now I'm not going to say that we need to put on, or even start some 18-year-old for Javier Mascherano, but they should get a fair shot. Recently Liverpool have been winning by two, three, and even eight-goal margins. It wouldn't hurt to put on someone like Nabil El Zhar.

Behind Chelsea, Liverpool have probably invested the most in their youth and reserve scheme (Chelsea once had a World Cup medalist  to play full-time in reserve matches). Arsenal's problem is a bit different. I think Arsene Wenger feels that an opportunity will come along for everyone, and he is just waiting for the best moment. Wenger is probably more in tune with his players, unlike Avram Grant or Rafa.
