Time for some humble pie. I wrote last week that Juande Ramos appears to have some of the Mourinho magic when it comes to tactical substitutions. Perhaps what I should have asked was why can't he put the right Spurs team on the pitch to start with.
Or is that too harsh? After all, he has three experienced centre-backs on the sick list and we know he inherited an unbalanced squad (please, no comments on whose fault that is - that's been done to death and isn't helpful at this stage). A half-blind ref didn't help matters after we suffered a very weak penalty. And Robbie Keane's sending off was a disgrace.
However, none of that helps Tottenham's league position nor does it answer the question: Why did we play with that formation? Birmingham started with five across the middle and dominated the midfield. In the first half especially, they picked up the majority of loose balls in the middle of the park and having three first-class strikers on the pitch is pointless if they don't get any service from the midfield.
OK, we perked up a bit in the second half and we could have scored at least two more - perhaps should have would be a better description. But let's face it, against a better team we would have been battered. Not that I'm suggesting for one minute that Ramos is stupid enough to play that formation against Manchester United or Arsenal, but at the moment it's difficult to see where the options are.
It is well documented that Ramos doesn't like going into the market in January, but he just might have to. Even if we get two or three centre-backs fit by then, the midfield is still a big issue. An argument can be made that it is still the same midfield that finished fifth last year and I can see that. However, the weakness was still there for all to see last season and against the better clubs, including Sevilla, we were always shown wanting.
If there is a half-decent midfielder around in the January window, Ramos might just have to put his hand in his pocket. If not, this is going to be a battle right to the end of the season.

A Midfielder is very much required!! but I feel Spurs Fans needed to keep quiet pre-season with the taking the 4th place from Arsenal as this has just made us all look like idiots!! Myself included! I mean come on we spent loads more than Arsenal and are about 25 points behind them!! after 14 games! Maybe we can win the crappy worthless cup - I am ready to quit supporting Spurs and support a decent team - a team that plays good football and wins games! COME ON ARSENAL - Anyone else?

"Birmingham started with five across the middle and dominated the midfield." Sorry, Kevin, but what game were you watching? Birmingham didn't dominate midfield at all. They were totally outplayed from the first minute to the 85th minute, even after Spurs had been reduced to ten men (and even while, for a few minutes, Spurs were down to ten men, when Gareth Bale was injured). Birmingham had one meaningful attack in the entire first half. And even that was a very soft penalty from a not especially threatening position. Meanwhile, Spurs dominated possession and territory and had chance after chance after chance. It was only Tottenham's profligacy in front of goal that allowed Birmingham to reach the break still ahead. Tottenham were even more dominant in the second half and could have scored three or four more than the two chances they did convert. Jerome's equalizer, like Birmingham's first goal, was completely against the run of play. Even after Keane's unfortunate sending off, Spurs were still by
Even after Keane's unfortunate sending off, Spurs were still by far the more likely team to score until the last five minutes. That's when Spurs' 10 players decided, unwisely, to sit back and settle for the draw. It only allowed Birmingham to apply concerted pressure on Spurs' leaky defence for the first time in the match. In short, Kevin, if you must write about football, at least watch a game properly before doing so!
Support Arsenal...are you f***ing mad? In the day of the glory hunter, you sir, are a disgrace(more likely just an Arsenal fan trying to be funny...)
Definitely an Arsenal fan trying to be funny.....but only making himself look very sad.

I would rather die that support the gooners. Yes they are a great team but please, nothing is worse that shifting teams just because your team is running through a bad patch. Spurs are out of luck at the moment. Spurs battered Birminghmam for most of that game, One of theie goals was a dodgy penalty, another was a screamer from 30 yards. Yes they are not defending with confidence at all as the Jerome goal highlighted. Younis Kaboul shouldn't even start they should use one of the younger players - why did they loan out Ifil ??? Spurs finished 5th two seasons in a row and this is just a bad season, the fact that we have lost 15 or so points in the last minutes of games from winning positions shows that. How many of those last minute shots on goal by players who hardly score would have normally sailed into the stands ? Add 15 points to our 12 and where are we in the league ? Ramos needs someone on the pitch to close down opposition and stop them having shots at goal from 20 -30 yards and just clear the thing fr

"Birmingham dominated the midfield" are you being serious? Birmingham were 2nd best in every department on Sunday. They looked as bad as Wigan did the previous week and if the match finished 4-0 to Spurs i think few would argue with it. The fact is that in football you dont always get what you deserve and we were punished for every mistake we made and didnt take our chances. Lets not start trying to read too much into the defeat and start blaming the manager. Every team will have games like that every year.

First half we had lot's of the game. Their goal came against the run of play. Second half created enough chances to bury them, but as has been the theme for large parts of this season we don't take them and then have been vulnerable to the sucker punch. We lost 1-0 to man utd could have had a couple of penalties, took a wonder goal near the end to win it, Liverpool 2-1 up could have made it 3-1 to kill but 2-2 injury time, Same with Arsenal although they battered us in the second half but again should have made it 2-0 instead it was 1-3. Ramos isn't a miracle worker he has to use the squad that is available to him. Now to be without Keane and Bale (who Geremi did a proper cynical job on a few weeks back - hence why he got injured again on Sunday) is going to be hard. Still I think Ramos will turn us into a better team. Just needs injection in some key positions doesn't matter if they are short term signings as long as they can fit in straight away to do a job and help the undoubted quality that is in our squ

We did not take our chances and made 2 bad defensive mistakes. Other than that we were very good. Game was a bit similar to the Fulham game. With Defoe's penalty miss and this bad result we led 5 points down the drain.

I was only joking you bunch of losers!! As if I would support Arsenal! What else in my comment made you think I was a Gooner??? I was being serious!I just worry about our current situation with no decent playmaker - Carrick allowed our attackers to combine better with the midfield, but who do with have now to provide our attackers? Huddlestone is the only one capable of passing the ball forward, but not the best on the ball. Also I agree - Birmingham were second best the whole game - I as there!! COYS.
Meant to write above that Spurs were still the dominant team even while they were down to NINE men for a few minutes, when Gareth Bale was injured.

Spurs worked hard and played well for most of the game. There is certainly a defensive weakness but by and large they should have wrapped this up early. In all this has not been their luckiest season and this game showed it. A weak penalty followed by the Keane debacle. If only refs were consistent. I saw at least 4 tackles on Lennon which were far worse than Keane's and were certainly more deliberate in an attempt to stop him rather than getting the ball. Some people seemed to be critical of Berbatov but I thought he was OK linking well and playing his part. However I am beginning to doubt Defoe. He really does not produce nor cause a consistent threat. It might be better to trade him for a strong creative mid-fielder.

as an Arsenal fan i think theres no need to write in and pose as a sp*ds fan. yes it does make us look bad, but then again, all the talk about 4th place being taken and the mouthing off does deserve some some bad karma going back to you so fair play!

I think Spurs problems go back to all of the Mangers they have had over the last few years they should have stuck it out with Martin Jol Look at the that class team Arsenal they have been quite for a couple of years but Wenger has been given time to build teams I think Ramos will be off this time next year if Spurs are where they are now

The 433 set up was in my opinion a straight forward reaction to the loss of JJ. If Jenas was fit I am sure we would have started 442. Without him the options were 442 with either Tainio, Huddleston or Boateng in the midfield. But with our abundance of riches up front I think to go with Bent, who scored midweek, was a natural thing to do especially as Keane is used to dropping back in to the hole & creating from there. SO it did not work great but there are a few things to note: Firstly, we did not deserve to go in 1-0 at half time, it should have been 2-1 or 3-1. I actually think bent may have gone off due to injury because he did take a knock in the first half & hobbled off at HT. Secondly, we did not lose due to that formation. We created enough chances to win 2 matches. Their goals were an individual error by Kaboul (& a harsh decision), a very good individual effort with some albeit not great defending and an absolute thunderbolt out of nowhere. If we had made the most of our chances we

spuds at the begining of the season you thought you would knock arsenal off top spot well let me tell you something.......... dream on! your relegation fighters not uefa champions league standard lol i feel sorry for you actually. well only a bit!
all the talk about 4th place being taken and the mouthing off does deserve some some bad karma going back to you so fair play!
Think you'll find that the vast majority of Spurs fans never bought into this whole idea that Tottenham would overtake Arsenal. Of course, there were a few loud mouths - but all clubs have them. Mostly, though, all the big talk about Spurs breaking into the top 4 came from the media - not from Spurs fans.
