Supporters of the Old Firm who live in the towns and cities peppered across Scotland should hang their heads in shame. They are the reason why no team apart from Rangers and Celtic will ever win the Scottish Premier League again.

Long gone are the days when Aberdeen and Dundee United were able to put together title-winning sides and sadly I fear those days will never, ever return. The scene is stagnant and we have the ridiculous situation at Gretna where they have virtually no fan base and rely on a sugar daddy to keep them ticking over. But even Brookes Mileson’s millions cannot compete with the usual SPL suspects, far less Glasgow’s multi-million pound Leviathans.

If you listen to any of the football phone-ins on national radio, you will hear accents from places like Aberdeen, Inverness and Dundee claiming allegiance to either Rangers or Celtic. It’s no wonder the Old Firm win the league every year when glory hunters pour into Celtic Park and Ibrox every week, furnishing the clubs’ already hefty coffers with more and more lolly.

'Alas, logic carries no weight in the world of Scottish football and Old Firm fans will continue to look down their noses at their humble neighbours with sneering contempt - even if they live just a short walk from their local club'

But despite the guarantee of success that goes with following these world-famous sporting institutions, there is the persistent bleating of dissatisfaction. For example, when things do not go according to plan in Europe (ignore the current situation), Old Firm supporters are quick to say it’s down to the fact the teams they compete against domestically do not offer a strong enough challenge.

You can talk until you are blue - or green - in the face about the reasons for perceived failure but the weight of responsibility for Scottish football’s monotonous grind lies squarely at the feet of supporters. Most Rangers and Celtic fans couldn’t tell you anything about the teams they compete against on a weekly basis, far less the other 30 clubs which compete in the Scottish Football League.

Many fans actually have clubs in their home towns but they would rather travel hundreds of miles to worship at their chosen Glasgow shrine. Alas, logic carries no weight in the world of Scottish football and Old Firm fans will continue to look down their noses at their humble neighbours with sneering contempt - even if they live just a short walk from their local club.

If a day ever comes when Scottish football fans show allegiance to the teams on their doorstep, it will be the day snow falls in the Sahara. But more to the point it will be the day teams compete on a level playing field, producing true champions worthy of the accolade.

Rest assured, I will not be holding my breath.
