Same can be said for any team, any country any league... what a pointless article. Same happens down south, theres people from London that support Liverpool and people from Leeds that follow Man Utd - what difference does it make if you grow up following that team? Only thing that bothers me is in the case of glory hunters but true supports are the lifeblood of any club.
by piaras harvey on December 05, 2007
i agree with scottie im from ireland i dont have to support an irish league team when my umbilical cord wwas cut green blood ran through me im a celtic fan because im a lifetime fan and im happy to go and pay the players wages and they win cups and make supportin the team a privellege so mate wise up it happens all over the world
by geo on December 05, 2007
I find the comments made by Graham Mann, ridiculous. Why on this earth should people hang their heads in shame ,because of the club they support.I`m sure next, he`ll be demanding, that only people from Glasgow, can PLAY for a Glasgow team.Players are allowed to go where they like, the paying fan has just as much,if not more right ,to do likewise. Wake up, Mr Mann, and talk sense!!!
by mac on December 05, 2007
i grew up 200 miles from the nearest scottish league club, ergo, your comments are misplaced. by your logic i should have supported no team at all. put a little more thought into your articles.
by tobias stockwell on December 05, 2007
What if you live in a new town like Cumbernauld or East Kilbride. No local clubs. U cant expect thousands of people from E.K to go and watch Junior fitba. Hamilton/Motherwell are closer ok by a few miles but they never done anything to attract support from here untill it was to late.
by bazzmatron on December 05, 2007
In a way I agree with Graham. I am a local living in the east end of Glasgow recently returned from working abroad. I was a season ticket holder when celtic park was empty and when we played in an empty hampden. I had to give up my ticket when I moved for work reasons as I needed all the cash I could get. Now i have returned I cannot get a season ticket to support my local team. This is partly due to the success of the team now which has attracted new glory hunting fans from other places. Any time I have managed to get a ticket I hear more accents from up north, edinburgh and Ireland than from glasgow. If they all supported their local teams I would be able to get a season ticket and support mine. There are many reasons for supporting a club. But I feel there are too many glory hunting old firm fans and worse those from areas outwith glasgow are often attracted more by the divisions associated with the clubs than anything else. You can watch football in any town. I have friends and family who support
by Arabs utd on December 05, 2007
Ok mr mann i agree. but would like to know where you live and what team you support? Do you live in glasgow? do you support your local old firm club?
by Jamie on December 05, 2007
Exactly how are you qualified to write an article of such complete and utter nonsense?! It's your opinion, fair enough, but opinions are like a***holes... everyone's got one and usually they're full of sh*t. Which is especially true in your case. I dont live in Glasgow, never have. My family are all from there historically though and how many little boys grow up supporting a team different from who their Dad does? There are a particular breed of glory hunting fans who cling to the latest successful club, and then disappear when the success dries up, They're not football fans. But as long as someone is going along to watch their team who the hell are you to state that they should hang their heads in shame?! As far as the finger pointing and shaming is concerned, i think you should be taking a closer look at yourself. Judging by the comments relating to your 'article' posted thus far, i'm not alone in thinking that
by joen on December 05, 2007
I think it is up to the individual which team they support,I was brought up in Airdrie, but followed Celtic from a young age.I look at Hearts and Hibs, when they get to a Cup Final they can take 35 to 40 thousand fans,if they would turn up more regular they would be challenging for league titles.
by Carlisle Celt on December 05, 2007
Think of all the English cities/towns were there are many who go to see Man U/Livepool etc. They still have more than enough support to survive.
by Christophe Peregrine on December 05, 2007
Tobias Stockwell reveal youself. Is that your real name if so I went to school with you in the south of france. I don't remember you as a football man? I supported marseille as a kid growing up in the south of france. I have since moved to Barcelona and support them as my local team.
by Arabs United on December 05, 2007
Unbelievable, Old firm fans united against a common enemy.
by Andrew Neil on December 05, 2007
Well I was brought up in a Rangers Family, I frequently go to local games when Rangers aren't playing and I know a hell of alot about Scottish and English football - So he can shut his trap - He can't tell you who to support ! Your team is who you are passionate about ! I am passionate about Rangers, and have been since I understood what football was. My mate is a born and bred blantyre man and he supports Hearts. Try and take away his passion for his team away from him you diluded idiot.
by RFC1873 on December 05, 2007
The team you support is, more often than not, based on the team your parents/family support. For example, a father grows up beside Ibrox and grows up supporting Rangers, he moves due to work commitments but raises his son to follow in his footsteps and support his team...what is wrong with this?
by Braganza on December 05, 2007
Get over it guys, you come from some pishy wee town that your ashamed you come from and to feel important about yourself you go glory hunting in Glasgow pretending your some sort of big guys. Take a good look at yourselves!
by JimD on December 06, 2007
Don't know why people are getting upset over a reasonable comment. No one has mentioned religion concerning certain teams, and that really is a big influence on what team you are brought up to follow. I support my team as it's my local team. simple really. It's a shame so many others can't. Well done to Celtic for getting through btw.
by Ross on December 06, 2007
A few simple facts to shut this idiot up. The entire Glasgow conurbation covers approximately 2.3 million people, 41% of Scotland's population.[10] (taken from wikipedia) Now if you then take the percentage population who will have a relative going back to Grandfather level you must be approaching at least 60%. So away and get a grip.....
by Crispin Jones-Drysdale on December 07, 2007
I agree 100% with Mr Manns point. Celtic had around 20,000 for the recentleague cup match against Hearts . Normally they have 60,000 for SPL games. They used to average in the mid 20,000 when they played at Hampden and with Rangers also this was an average attendance in the 80s. Where have the missing 40,000 came from. Glory Hunters deciding they are old firm fans again , driving by half a dozen other clubs to get to Glasgow so they can boast about being in the last 16 of the Chumpions League. Do you ever hear East Fife or Queens Park fans boasting about getting to the last 16 of the scottish cup. The Greatest Fans in the world - Dont make me laugh.

Maybe its to do with the fact that Rangers and Celtic werent winning everything out of site and they didnt fancy going to see them get beat. I think back in 86 it was about 2.75 to get into a game so your theory "cock caller" is absurd. I wouldnt call the vast majority of patrons at Ibrox and Parkhead prawn sandwich munchers at all, far from it.

As a dons fan from EK who has lived in lots of places, I cannot claim I'm not guilty ... but the Mann-boy has a point. I spent a good few weekends watching clubs like Hereford, Runcorn and Marine - really good football and healthy support that would put most Scottish gates to shame. What people forget is that England's population is markedly greater and less concentrated geographically, so it can afford to absorb a greater degree of migration tio the bigger clubs. Look at Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds and Man City who all drew massive support when they were in the lower leagues. At the end of the day - support who you like and enjoy it, but have some empathy and look out for your local team. They really do need your support and don't forget - if they didn't exist - neither would the big guns.
by tom on December 16, 2007
glory seekers there every where. if man utd was a 4th division side how many supporters worldwide would they have?or better still down south. i,m all supporting your local clubs no matter what division their in.
by Jim Mcghee on December 17, 2007
the reason most fans support celtic or rangers is because the rest of the teams are genrally mince ,who wants to pay 20 to 30 quid to watch a team get gubbed or ekk out a nil nil draw plus by your reckoning a scot living in england should support england cause that where they live.Start supporting a decent team and stop yer greetin
by bhoywunda on December 18, 2007
He's from East Kilbride. East Kilbride is a suburb of Glasgow so he can support Celtic instead.
by Jock MacScottish on January 01, 2008
I come from the very village that Moses McNeill and his pals hail from. The place that formed Rangers. Hang your own head you ill-informed numpty.
by aidan on January 03, 2008
to the celtic fan who cant get a season ticket ring parkhead theyve got thousands.
by michael on January 03, 2008
then shame on the foreign players who play for celtic and rangers
by Neil on January 24, 2008
I grew up in the Highlands and my only option was to watch the local Butcher, Baker n Candlestick-Maker kick lumps out of each other in the Highland League. Dont feel guilty for gravitating to the big teams after suffering that tripe.
by ryan mckay on March 12, 2008
i support celtic and i was born in inverness, i support them because my dad has always supported them. using your logic i should have supported no proffesional team untill 1994 when caley thistle were put together. i now live in edinburgh, should i support hibs or hearts now? next year we're moving to melbourne, should i then change my support to their local soccer team. i support my team to support my dad.
by Craig Murray on May 13, 2008
I don't live in Glasgow but support Celtic... I lived in Glasgow until I was 4, all my family are from there originaly, we moved to Cumbernauld..I left Cumbernauld a couple of years ago to live in Belfast, Ireland Would the guy that wrote this say I should hang my head in Shame for supporting a Team, Club, Family that I've always known. Does he think I should support my local team wich is Linfield or maybe he thinks I should have switched clubs when Clyde decided to move to Cumbernauld. Bring on 3 in a row!!!
by Ian McDade on May 15, 2008
Ahh C'mon now. My grandfather is Glasweigan and my mothers side are from Co. Mayo. You expect me to support Manchester City or United because I was born in Manchester? I can't speak for Rangers but Celtic are far more than just a Scottish/Glasgow Club.
P.S. Tom, If I were a glory seeker then I would surely support Manchester United considering I grew up 6 miles from Old Trafford. The fact is that family influence directed me towards Celtic and I am truely greatful.
by Derek McGuff on December 09, 2008
I've just come across this article and the author's spot on! I'm a jambo from Midlothian and I'd rather those bigoted tossers from outwith Strathclyde who support either of the ugly sisters of Scottish football, would support HIBS rather than be led by religious bigots and secretarian bile to bolster the financial coffers of either of the Glasgow Two.
by Lee stewart on December 20, 2008
My Dad hates football & always has! My family left scotland in the 1600's. They originally came from N.Ireland, then were on the Isle of Arran before going to Dunfermline. I was born in Southampton, but move to cardiff for 3 years, then spent 20+ years in Northamptonshire. My mother comes from Liverpool. Also I went to school in Benbecula. Now who should I support. Also, I am now living in the US, I support LA Galaxy only because they are the only team I have seen, yet my wife is from New york! Once this has been decided, which National Team? If you support a scottish team, must you support scotland or can you support england or vice versa? I am actually "floating" & I want to settle down & support a team. I tend to zoom into the underdog rather than go for Glory & top clubs. But who is my local club & can you be english & support a scottish, welsh or irish club? By the way I once lived near cambridge, but i went to peterborough games & sold their programmes! I also lived in East London & was a steward at West Ham, yet I worked near Arsenal! Clubs such as Man Und,Liverpool,Aston Villa, West Ham, WBA & Celtic have alot of "TV & movie" people, so should we do different?
by stephen wilkings on December 29, 2008
a true supporter - whether you like it or not - is the supporter who grew up or lives in that city. thats because the football team is part of the city and the city part of the team; its people are the club... this is a fact, sorry... the only people who will disagree with me are the ones who dont live where their team are.... but you move to where your team is and honestly tell me you dont notice any difference in your love for that team
by d d on January 16, 2009
ive supported rangers since I was 4, I was brought up to support them when I was younger. so I'm not gonna support anyone else. and thats just the way it, theres no point in this column. besides, its up to people to support what team they want. and if the other teams could, dundee united are beggining to do it bring in cheap good talent and then build a title challenge. rangers and celtic sometimes buy shite. rangers/celtic could spend 3 million on a crap centre forward and any other team could get a nice wee 300,000 gem. its just how it goes sometimes.
on January 26, 2009 on January 26, 2009
Urg. I agree with this 100%. No one says Rangers And Celtic shouldn't have supporters, it's just unfair when people parade on about being their number 1 fan, when all they do is watch the match from their TV, and wear the top just feel good about supporting the "top" club. I'd admire anyone who doesn't support Rangers or Celtic. Scottish football revolves around the two teams who soak up the limelight. Whatever happened to the local clubs? I for one am proud to wear my local clubs top when i go down the street. Why do people only ever look at supporting the "best" team? Scottish Football is down the drains now.
by Iain Somerville on May 04, 2009
I was born in Glasgow, but I've lived in Australia, Clydebank, and now Dumbarton. Rangers have not won a title since 2005 - surely if I were a glory hunter, I would have lost interest by now? Surely, if I were a true glory hunter, I would just support Man United or Barcelona, since they are big teams and have far more chance of winning the CL than Rangers do. You go on about local teams, what about, for example, Aberdeen fans who live in Cove? Should they "hang their heads in shame", for not supporting their local team Cove Rangers? Of course not. If anyone is hanging their head in shame it should be you for writing such a ridiculous, ill-informed article.
by Dons AFC on June 23, 2009
Good Article. Ask any true football supporter throughout the world and they would agree 100% with this article. Its clearly just the glory hunting Old Firm fans, who dont have the bottle to support their local team - where losing a match is a much more probably. Supporting a team is not about winning or Losing, its about being part of a club. With first hand experience of dealing with the people described in this article,I have noticed they all have the same glory hunting persona, will never admit they are wrong, easily aggravated ,lack of intelligent etc. Infact I would bet most of the critics of this article havent even read the whole thing, as they see the headline and immediatly spit out their dummies, posting immature comments like "oh, you should be the ones hanging your heads for writing this article". I really hope these idiots one day see the errors of their ways, but it looks like you'll never prise the baby away from its bottle.
