So far, Martin O'Neill's signings have been a variety of English players, from young and unproven to experienced but average Premier League players and three foreigners.
The three foreign players aren't exactly stars. Stilian Petrov is a player who knew O'Neill from there days at Celtic and would have plenty of respect for the Irishman. John Carew was a reserve at Lyon looking for a new start, and Moustapha Salifou hasn't played yet, although he looks good in reserve team action. Villa are improving week by week. But with the January transfer window coming soon, and Villa looking good enough for a European place finish this season, surely now is the time to bring in at least two big name signings. The current squad looks pretty solid, but a couple of 24 to 28-year-olds with European and international pedigree could so easily elevate the club to a possible top four finish.
Who can Villa buy? Full-back Jose Bosingwa at FC Porto looks like a real target for O'Neill. He is at the top of his game at the moment, but with his club still in Europe it's unlikely he would join the Villa at this stage of the season. He was available at the start of the season, but the price might well have trebled as a result of Porto's impressive progress in the Champions League. If I was looking for a right-sided midfielder with experience and international pedigree it would be Maxi Rodriguez. He is captain of Atletico Madrid right now, having taking over from Fernando Torres in the summer. He could be the kind of player to ensure Villa a top four place.Rumour has it that Villa are looking for a striker. Gabby Agbonlahor is performing well at the moment, and Carew is starting to get among the goals. Marlon Harewood scored his 100th club goal recently, but Luke Moore and Shaun Maloney look to have lost their early-season spark.
Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent are players who have been mentioned so far, but the signing of a real 20-goal-a-season striker could really send Villa to the heights of the Premier League.

Villa should go for Claes Jan Huntalaar of Ajax, he is good for 20 goal a season, or even more... Crouch is also one for us... get him back in january.

Defoe isn't gonna happen. Would have crouchy tho. As for a right sided midfielder I think theres no better man for the job than Jamie Milner. He's not in the Newcastle side week in week out and thats what he needs. If we got Jamie back we would be sorted for midfield.

Even if O'niell put in a bid for Defoe he wouldn't go. As good a player as Defoe is he is more interested in money and the lifestyle of a footballer than being the best he can be. He wants to stay in London where all the glamour, glitz and expensive shops are. The only realistic bid i can see him accepting and be willing to fight for a place at is Man United. But Fergie wont stand for his strops like Jol did, so im not sure that would work? Saying that he's a very selfish player but that might just be the mentality of Spurs. He's hardly on the level of Teves, Rooney and Ronaldo is he and i cant really see him being excited from them scoring as they are for each other if he's not on the score sheet too. I think Bent going to Spurs was a terrible move, cos they refuse to give him a chance no matter how good he plays. He hasn't had one 90 minute game all season.. yet Berbatov and Keane who play worse than him sometimes are always getting a run out. He should've went to West Ham

Villa need players who will blend with the current squad and Justin Hoyte and Robbie Keane would be perfect
