Rafa Benitez used a 4-2-1-3 formation against Reading - where did that come from? The Liverpool boss under-estimated Steve Coppell's men and paid the price. Why risk Jamie Carragher and rest Sami Hyypia? Why not use the Harry Kewell from the start with Ryan Babel and then, when we were were down 2-1, start making changes with the aim of resting players? You do not sub match-winners like Steve Gerrard and Fernando Torres when you're trailing - this suggests Benitez was willing to lose the game from the onset. If that was the plan, then he might as well have fielded the reserve team.
Having said that, the referee was a total wreck with his decisions - but since we have benefited from decisions in the past, I feel this game evened those out. If we had had some luck or the ref had been slightly fair, then the game would have been over in the first half. But if we want to win the league, we should not rely on the officials to do us any favours. Had we gone to Reading with the intention of winning or taken the opposition seriously, we would have won hands down. But then, who can guess what Rafa is thinking ?
With Arsenal also losing, there are no unbeaten teams in the Premier League and the top four have occupied their respective positions. We shall see the true picture come January.
As for my fellow Liverpool fans - do not lose heart. Reading was a blip, a wake-up call. Normal service will resume on December 16 after we have secured our slot in the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

you having a laugh, number one last year we beat you at your place, with a man down (tat may actually be your idea of normal service if it is i appologise lol) and number two do you not remember last year rafa stupity last year, with in the space of 2 weeks you were out of the fa cup to arsenal out of the carling cup to arsneal out to far behind the premier league to catch, thats your normal service, you need to take man u serious, or we will destroy you. be honest when you won the champions league all the big names did not take you serious, due to over 15 years of decline no one took you seriuos, you had the promoted team affect almost of the champios league, to your credit rafa won your respect back for you and now every one knows you are a threat, but in the premiership you are one of the big fish you cannot get awa wit it in the premier league,

As a Royals fan I laughed when I saw this, to suggest that Rafa Benetiz deliberately picked a team to loose is amazing. Quite simply he got his tactics wrong, it happens. Also to claim the ref was poor is just plain wrong, it was the linesman who gave the penalty, the ref has to go with what he said as he was in the better position. I might also point out that Mark Lawrenson an ex-liverpool player thought it was the correct decision. As for Gerrard going off even if he stayed on you would still have lost and in fact Gerrard may well have been sent off as his tackles became increasing reckless as the game went on.

nothing to worry about guys. Reading are are better team than Bolton. i would gladly accpet the loss at reading. it was one of those days for the reds yesterday, hit the post, had no rub of the green. Dont forget fellow reds, Man Utd went to bolton, underestimated them, rested Ronaldo. and had no luck in front of goal. went down 1-0 to bolton. This kinda thing happens to all the teams. Lets get through Marseille, and focus on Man U. Benitez hasnt beaten Fergie in the premier league yet. Even die hard man U supporters will acknlowledge that is a statistic that is bound to change soon.United were lucky to beat lierpool last year at anfield. The reds dominated the game. But United took their chances.

Andrew, Please read the article once more - it says "If that was the Plan" Never said It was. Nowhere in the article is the Penalty Reading got is mentioned - so where did the linesman come into the picture? Just go over it once and you might understand the article is more about Liverpool's lose then Readings Victory.

LOL I see the Mancs haven't let us down with the usual diatribe and bad spelling. As a real supporter (yep I actually come from there AND know which city my team plays in) I accept it was a bad result, as was the Bolton one. "Destroy us" hmmm, well may be you will win, don't think so but thats my OPINION. As to the champs league, mate the Mancs don't have the steel needed and once again this year your team will be bridesmaids. "Tat" will be normal service resuming, as well it should.

rafa thought he could pick any team and get at least a draw at reading as it turned out that team played bollocks and reading fully deserved the victory. It could be worse - at least we didnt lose to middlesborough......

I read all your "3 points are already ours" comments last week. I chuckled at Kuyts whingeing. We are a useless bunch of Berkshire overlooked by the government and the BBC and Trevor Brooking. Don't come here again with your big city conceit and complacency, come with some hay for the cattle that feed behind the goal.

I don't like losing and the scoreline looks bad. I believe Rafa made a couple bad decisions at the start - should have played Hyypia and Kewell instead of Hobbs & Voronin - but I understand his thinking. Rafa's idea was to go physical up front and in midfield against a physical Reading - right idea wrong personnel. Torres took a knock and had to be taken off or risk him not playing against Marseille. Babel should have been given more time on pitch but at expense of Sissoko who again shown he is not Liverpool material. Rotation was expected and the vultures are already blaming this for the loss, however we made just as many changes in last few matches but Saturday was a mixture of Reading playing a good pressing game, some poor football on our part, luck and the referee.

Poor show, let's hope it was a blip. The shape was all wrong and that was evident inside the first 5 minutes. Everyone could see it, no width, lost count of the amount of times we had players turn back infield as they had no options wide. Of course a penalty that never was (again) didn't help as well as getting two clear pens ourselves waved away. Still, I'm sure Everton felt the same after our 2-1 earlier. Can only assume you were drunk Craig or banged your head, what the hell is that comment about? A new language?
