Rafael Benitez’s fatal decision to rush Xabi Alonso back from injury earlier this season may have a profound and unwanted effect on the Spanish playmaker's Liverpool future. Add to that the form of Javier Mascherano, the rise of Lucas Leiva, interest from Atletico Madrid and a need for first-team games to ensure Euro 2008 selection, it is not inconceivable that Alonso may call time on his career at Anfield. Before he was injured against Portsmouth on September 15, Alonso had been an early victim of Rafa’s rotation policy, starting four games and warming the bench for three, including being an unused sub in two Champions League encounters with Toulouse. With Steven Gerrard out injured against Derby, Alonso seized his chance and proceeded to run the show as Liverpool battered the Rams, with Alonso scoring two of the six goals that day. Then disaster struck when Alonso was injured against Portsmouth - a devastating blow for the Basque maestro, who was clearly high in confidence after his Derby heroics. 'Using barely fit players surely flies in the face of Benitez’s philosophy of rotating to keep them fit' So Alonso was injured. It happens to most players at one time or another, no need for alarm. The fatal blow came 43 days later, when Benitez inexplicably rushed him back from injury and put him in the starting line-up against Arsenal when he was clearly not 100 per cent match fit. It was a gamble by Benitez that spectacularly failed to pay off. Alonso aggravated the same injury he had suffered against Portsmouth and was forced off. As a man of fixed footballing ideas who regularly espouses the positive virtues of regular rotation, It's puzzling that Benitez completely contradicted himself with his Arsenal team selection.

Alonso will come into the middle, and Gerrard will be pushed to the right. Momo is the most likely to find himself pushed out of the picture with the rising talent showing.

We need at least two quality players in every position - that means at least four central midfield players. Alonso signed a new contract last season he's going nowhere - try a bit of research and put your brain into gear and your blogs may improve. Very poor again and that's another 30 seconds of my life you owe me.

Thsi is just another sensationalist article on Sportingo ...

At the beginning of the season, Alonso was not a first choice in the team. If Liverpool spend 17m on Mascherano, it seems likely that he will not be sitting on the bench much, otherwise why spend such a phenomenal amount of money? We may need 2 or 3 players for every position, but with Alonso needing to be a first team regular to assure his Euro 2008 place, I don't see him getting the minutes he needs with mascherano and lucas also vying for places. I don't think Alonso will risk it anyway. I think he will leave. Signing a new contract means nothing these days.

Alonso and Mascherano are not even similar players.. one breaks up the oppositions play, the other starts our play. Ideally, both should be playing in the team. The way forward for Liverpool is a 5 man midfield, with wingers who can not only cross but act as strikers. Benitez certainly wouldn't want to lose either Alonso or Mascherano and will aim to keep both. Also, seems unfair to blame Benitez for Alonso's injury.. Alonso told Rafa he was ready to play, so he has to blame himself.
...three top class central mids of the quality of Gerrard, Mascherano and Alonso and manages to keep them happy and playing regularly. All three players are arguably first team regular type players, and I'll bet all three think of themselves that way. The likes of Sissoko and Lucas are back-up players for now. The fact is, you can't play a consistent team and keep all 3 happy all the time. Sooner or later, one of them will become disaffected. Alonso is already showing signs of this with his recent comments. Something will have to give. Furthermore, Benitez going all out to sign Mascherano means he feels LFC are lacking something in the midfield area. I doubt Alonso feels that way...

I can't see Alonso leaving in the forseeable future. He is a very different player to Mascherano. They both have fantastic qualities. Mascherano is a monster at tidying up and winning the ball back. Alonso has a good football brain and is a skillful distributor. Is there any doubt that any manager wouldn't do everything they could to keep these players? This is especially the case with Rafa as he is a tactician who likes to use the abilities of different players for different opponents. There are plenty of games in a season (60-70 games)to keep all of Liverpools midfield players happy. Alonso and the monster mash will be staying at Liverpool!
...doesn't mean Benitez should just accept it. Torres said the same (apparently) before the Arse game and he *also* got injured again in that game! Afterwards, Benitez even *admitted* that he knew Torres wasn't fit, but he played him anway becuase Torres said he was okay. This is not good management in my view. Why play unfit payers when you have fully fit players ready to go. Isn't that the cornerstone of rotation?! As a result of Benitez's decisions, LFC have lost Alonso for almost 6 more weeks. Playing a 5 man midfield doesn't work with LFC. If rafa was going to play that consistently, he would have done so by now. He hasn't. And evern when he does, he gets it wrong, like playing Peter Crouch on the wing!

This is a pointless article.
They are both assets to the club, but it may not be Benitez's decision. Alonso may feel that his Euro 2008 chances will be affected if he stays at Liverpool, and *he* may decide to go somewhere where he will be top dog, i.e. almost guaranteed to start. He doesn't have that at LFC, and the plain fact is, you cannot play Masch, gerrard and Alonso in every game. Gerrard will rarely not start, Masch is 17m potential signing, then there's Sissoko and Lucas to keep happy as well. As far as I'm concerned, Mascherano is not needed. We should save the 17m and use it for something else. it's not like we desperately NEED another center mid, is it?

Ofcourse Rafa brought back Alonso too early. Stating the obvious there because he got injured again. It sounds like you're assuming the medico's told Benitez that he wasn't fit to play. I would, however assume the opposite. I very much doubt Rafa would have played Alonso if he was told not to by the medical staff. I don't think he'll be sold at all in January. Sissoko is the one that should be sold. He's a great tackler but I've never seen a worse passer of the ball play for Liverpool. Xabi will play a lot of games once he's fit. He won't start them all but not many will. Mascherano is quality. If Hargreaves and Carrick are worth £17m then Masher is easily worth it. Would be a big mistake to let him go.
Xabi has said in public that he needs the games to prepare for Euro 2008. If he, as you suggest, may not start alot of them, then why would he stay, when he can go elsewhere and be a certain starter? I agree that Masch is great player, but I would rather have Alonso starting the majority of games than him. And I sincerely doubt Sissoko will be sold. Rafa seems to have a soft spot for him. There's just no way you can keep 5 center mids happy, especially when there are three of them who deserve to be starting every game.

WHO IS THIS GUY KANWAR AND WAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT WHEN ALONSO IS FIT HE WILL ONE OF THE FIRST NAMES ON RAFAS TEAMSHEET!! ANOTHER SH** BLOG!! GIVE UP KANWAR!!!
Jamie I actually said Xabi would play a lot of games once fit. I think Xabi and Stevie will be mostly used at home and Masher and Xabi more away. I hope you're wrong about him leaving and about Sissoko staying. We'll just have to wait and see what Rafa decides but I'd be stunned if he let Xabi leave.

Another nonsense from a poor writer.

yet, again, another major crap post.. 2 2 = 6 is always your model, get a life mate.
Rafa can keep five center mids happy. If Masch signs for 17m, doesn't that mean Rafa will be forced to play him regularly? As LFC's 2nd most expensive signing in history, he won't be a squad player will he? Plus, Rafa will have to justify such a huge outlay to Hicks/Gillette proving it was worth it. He won't do that by keeping Masch on the bench. From Alonso's POV, it seems like his chanes at being a regular starter are diminishing all the time. He was on the bench alot at the beinning of the season, and only came into the side as a starter when Gerrard was injured. Given his comments about Euro 2008, the alleged interest from Atletico and Barca, I think Alonso will leave UNLESS he is a regular starter. He won't settle for a bit-part in the team, and why should he?

Sissoko was ill and couldn't play in the Arsenal game, this is why Benitez was forced to play Gerrard in the Cardiff game when he wanted to rest him. Benitez loves Alonso and would not have played him if he thought he would injure himself again.
...he thought he would injure himself again'. Well - after the Arsenal game, wherer a blatantly unfit Torres *also* suffered a recurrence of his injury, benitez stated: "He just was not fit. We talked beforehand and he said he was fine. Now we must wait again, he had been out for some time and we have been pushing to get him back, but he has not been right and he still is not right”. He admits AFTER the game that he knew Torres was unfit BEFORE the game. Still played him though. So I think it IS possible that Benitez would risk Alonso getting injured. And he DID. And the gamble failed.
Xabi will have a choice in the matter. IMO he wont be sold and he'll have to accept whatever role he is given but I do believe as I've said he will play alot of games. Time will tell..... If Stevie or Masher were to get injured he'd be left with the inexperienced Lucas and to be brutally honest the very poor Sissoko as back up.

JK's articles just prove why he's not a football club manager and sticks to writing amateur articles ("though i must say- his articles are more entertaining than watching the SIMPSONS")
