Big-money names appear to be top of the agenda as January fast approaches, the latest to arrive on the tabloid back pages being Spanish striker David Villa.

According to the Valencia player’s agent, a move to the Premier League is imminent and Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs are all considering a £25m bid (The People). The impish striker has been a veritable goal machine in La Liga since he started his career at Sporting Gijon seven years ago. He is a lethal finisher who at 26 is about to reach his peak and it seems he is keen to follow fellow star striker Fernando Torres to England.

Of the three sides mentioned, it is hard to decide which of them he might join. Can Spurs really afford to fork out on another big-money signing after the cash spent by Martin Jol in the summer? Liverpool, too, look similarly cash-strapped although a pairing of both Spaniards up front would be a joy to watch. That leaves Arsenal and whilst it is true that Arsene Wenger rarely spends big, Villa is the type of player who could fit in well at the Emirates.

Manchester United’s industrious midfielder Owen Hargreaves is a little unhappy at present (various) and has admitted to being frustrated at his squad role at Old Trafford. The England international has started just eight games this season and has admitted to being mildly irritated, saying: "Sir Alex has proved to be the perfect manager. With the injury, he's known when to rest me and when to play me. The only disappointment has been I'd like to have played more games. Hopefully, that'll change.”

Canadian-born Hargreaves is unlikely to want to rock the boat and is simply voicing his desire to play more for the club that bought him from Bayern Munich after what seemed like an age of pleading for someone in the Premier League to sign him up. I am sure he will get more games the season wears on, not least because he is a top-quality playe. Unfortunately for him, United have a great many top-quality players to pick from.
