We're talking about a man with a simple philosophy; to play football. Yet time and time again, either the press or the club's own supporters have a go every time there is even a hiccup! Although I realise that Arsenal have some supporters who are not supporters in the true sense, more just a group of depressed fans that simply don't know what football is about, this can be seen as a majority, rather than a significant minority. The real majority are some of the most satisfied and knowledgeable supporters around.
Forgetting the fans for a moment, the real question is: Why is Arsene Wenger such a good manager!?
Most would simply say that it is his ability to sign players and nurture them. Fine. But how does he do such a thing and how does he do it so successfully? This needs more intricate investigation.
Wenger, firstly, is the best MANAGER in the world today. Before you get angry and disagree, just think what manager means. I am studying management for my degree, and let me tell you, Wenger is the best around. Here are some of the main reasons why Arsene is the best:

Nice article mate!

Very dificult to prove who is the or was the "best manager",as they all operate under different financial situations ie Chelsea purchased Mutu,Veron and Crespo who played little if no part in shaping the club's future(apart arguably Crespo. The price of these purchases exceeded Arsene entire net transfer budget for the last 10 years,so any comparison with any top level Premiership manager and Arsene is impossible as he hasn't been afforded the same luxuries as Benitez,Whiskey nose and Jose. One interesting point though is I cannot remember Arsene selling a player like Stam because he had fallen out with him ,so arguably costing the team the Premiership the next year(replacement Lauren B lanc was at best slow)

then where are the champions league medals?????
It doesn't make him the best as there are so many factors to include in gauging what makes an outstanding manager. What we should be thankful for is having Wenger in charge and on such a long contract, things are on the up for Arsenal and it's nice that the man responsible for the majority of it is recognised by non Arsenal fans. Cheers Steve

Where are his "champions league medals"? That's plural. Where are Fergie's? He has one. The CL is half League, half knockout cup. Do you think Liverpool were the cream of Europe in the last few seasons? They reached the final twice. Now, on to sensible stuff. Great article, and I am proud of the tag that we "make stars rather than buy them". Having said that, Arsene's philosophy has always been to get forward, and his network excel in finding those sorts of players. I think we have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to central defenders and keepers. Manuel pulled off two class saves against Chelski, but I think we should use that warchest to find a world class keeper. Same with central defenders... we could well find ourselves short when the African Cup of Nations kicks in, even if we do recall Johann Djourou from Brum.

Fabregas easily, how the hell did Jenas get 11%?

Sure you list a few pointers that Im sure every management course youve been on mentions as the most important to be successful, but you forget one think! Wenger doesnt teach football, he has his talented scouts looking for talented players that already know how to play football. He then impresses on them his philsophy of football, that is to play with speed and movement, enjoy and entertain. Then the most important reason he is the best manager is that he lets his players off the leash, to go enjoy and express themselves. We all wish Wenger would pull Eboue up for his antics, but I figure, AW can see what Eboue can do in training when he is free to express himself ( i think we have all seen he can be awesome) but what is good and bad about Eboue goes hand in hand. He instils belief in his players ability whatever age they are to go out and play!
If I was a Manchester United fan and had watched my club make the following purchases,I too would be disapointed to have won The CL only once in the last 50 odd years; Veron £28 million Ferdinand £28 million Rooney £28 million etc etc etc as I said previously if Arsene had been afforded such luxuries, expectations would be far higher at Arsenal.

It's a shame that Wenger's had a bit of a blind spot to the CL since he's arrived. For one reason or another we've always come up quite short in the CL besides when we reached the final. How anyone can consider that a reason not to find him the best though is beyond me. People say it's unfair to make comparisons because each manager works within different frames. I'm afriad out of the top 4 that's exactly why we SHOULD compare. I can see why comparing a manager from a far weaker side becomes very difficult, but here we're talking about 4 managers if you include Jose who have the same briefing as to what to aim for- victory in every tournament, mainly the league. If Wenger can equal, better or even just compete with those other managers on the back of a MINISCULE budget which he set himself in comparison, whilst also playing the most entertaining football, then the contest is undisputable. Success is NOT everything, and even if it was, Wenger has been one of the most successful managers around. Tell me, do

C'mon mates, seriously...Arsene is without a doubt the best manager around. Why do you think the FA approaches him time and time again to manage England? Could you imagine that-what hypocrisy that would be. For what he had done with the money, support, and tools given he has turned Arsenal into the 2nd richest club in the world and the top of the EPL. Give credit to where credit is due. Arsene Wenger is the sh**...so take a big whiff.

was there ever any doubt?
by Cesco on December 19, 2007
he managed an International side to success. Alas he doesn't have the bottle for that and as he hasn't even one the champs league then simply he is a quality premier league manager but nothing else.
by Ashley on December 19, 2007
Sven definately is the best look at it......the only one to win the league double and cup in three different countries.

First can i thank you, (genuine) no insults just an answer back, amazing, AGAIN I AM SERIOUS WE CAN HAVE A PROPER CONVERSATION. youare presuming a believe sir alex is the best manager to ever of been, that is in correct this asks if arsene wenger is the worlds breatest manager. alothough iworship the ground saf walks on, and beleive there is NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE who could of served our club better for longer, saf is not the worlds greatest manager, although saf does have 2 uefa cup medals to his name (one with aberdean) a champions league medals and the world club championship, 21 years at the helm of a financial giant like united still means he has fallen short, saf needs to win in again to live up to expectationsand probably 2 time to be the worlds greatest. now look at lippi, won the champions league won seria a serveral times, won la liga, and won the world cup with italy, i am sorry mate but there are so many things that need to be taken in to consideration how do you judge the worlds greatest manag
manager, gretna in scotland have been promoted three times in three years. sorry bud but this article is just after arguements.
one question mate, do you think saf is the best in the world. (probably not) the arguement for many years is arsene wenger or saf the best in england, THAT IS A VALID ARGUEMENT. but forget saf and stop having a go at man u, if your asking is he the best in the world, you put your self in to a different ball game, especially considering it does not even mention football, just the worlds best manager. that statement brings in rugby, cricket NFL,baseball, basket ball, not to mention world football, i mean you go on about him spending pitence, what about sau paula in brazil, last year they spent £127,000 on transfers and rackeed in £37 million but they produce all there own teams (and they will be from brazil born in brazil, wher do you think arsenes scounts and man u scouts go, so mate just have a re think, we watch a privalidged league, comparisiions of worlds greatest manager and arsene just do not come in to it,when was the last time arsne brought a 6 year old londoner though the ranks, NEVER, Zezé Moreira
(sao paulos manager) brought though 8 youth team players last year and won the league, they do what saf did with 92/93 squad every year!!!!!!!
by Deon on December 19, 2007
It depends on what people classify as being successful. If you talk about quality of football no one comes close to wenger. If you talk about success well Fabio Capello and Lippi are the best. If you talk about stability then Alex Ferguson is the best, outshades Wenger since his team has never been thratened out of the top 4, where as Wenger has been threatened a few times.
by craig on December 20, 2007
but i still disagree with youabout quality, i refer youback to sao paulo, there youth squad, will probablybe better then arsenal liverpool man u and chelsea put together at a fraction of the cost
by VanPerry on January 09, 2008
I agree with Deon. But my reason for Wenger being the greatest manager is for the impact he has had on the game. A double in his first season!? Unearthing more stars than ANY other manager. As for Fergie he is great and a true winner, but a very different manager. He buys players like Carrick for what, £18 million? Wenger is... > The coach/trainer > The chief scout > The dietition > The tactition > The accountant!? He is everything. He isnt the most succesful manager on earth; he may not achieve as much as Fergie, Capello or Lippi, but he is certainley the greatest revolutionary.
